There are a lot of people who stayed current on their mortgage for a house they were upside down on, bought a new home at a lower price after the market crashed, on credit... then defaulted on the first house. That would be like walking away from your car, you still own it and are responsible for it. If i owe the bank money (house, car, whatever) they expect to get their money back at some point. If i would owe more than the house is worth, i can't just walk away. The police would get me if i tried. But if i were under water i could still continue to live in the house as long as i paid every month. Almost everyone pays interest only, so the monthly payments are not as large like in America. |
