A second day of torrid protests against Japan began in Chinese cities on Sunday, with the government struggling to find a balance between venting public anger and containing violence that could backfire ahead of a delicate leadership succession.

Chinese, Russian PMs hold phone talks on upcoming meetings

China and Russia will work closely together to push for success in the upcoming 17th regular meeting between the two countries' prime ministers and the prime ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Premier Wen Jiabao said Saturday.

Newly appointed Japanese ambassador to China dies

Newly appointed Japanese Ambassador to China Shinichi Nishimiya died in a hospital in Tokyo on Sunday Morning at the age of 60.

The 60-year-old Nishimiya Nishimiya's appointment had just been approved by the government on Tuesday to replace current Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa, at a time when the two countries are embroiled in a dispute over a group of islands in the East China Sea, local media reported.

U.S. GETTING DEEPER IN SOUTH CHINA SEA FIGHT

China has been warning the United States about getting involved in the dispute it has with countries in the region over access rights to various islands and maritime energy resources in the South China Sea – which China claims as its own.

Combined with that, the U.S. has announced that it intends to place more policy emphasis on Asia and is committing additional military forces to the region to underscore the right of international passage through the South China Sea despite what Beijing says.

Now, the U.S. is going to set up an advance command post on the Philippine island of Palawan which faces the South China Sea.

China wary of U.S. military moves in Asia-Pacific

When a senior U.S. general met in Beijing recently with Lt. Gen. Cai Yingting, the deputy chief of China's armed forces, Cai forcefully objected to America's expanding military presence in Asia and the Pacific, describing it as an effort to encircle his country.

"Why are you containing us?" Cai demanded, according to a U.S. official who was present and described the incident in return for anonymity.

The U.S. general denied seeking to contain China, but it's easy to see why officials in Beijing might get that impression.
