The US Marines have always had Harriers, since the 1970'S. They did buy some ex-British ones but they generally make their own in the states.

It looks like the satellite image shows the base while it was still under construction. There are also pictures you can click on.

I found this picture showing a fence around the the base. I don't see walls or sandbags. It would take like five seconds to get through this fence with the right equipment/explosives.

Maybe they should beef up the perimeter defenses?

Obviously there were no Navy SEALs there or this attack would not have been at all successful -- one SEAL is the functional equivalent of a regular company of soldiers or Marines (120 men).
