Historically Asia has been dominated by China, militarily as well as culturally. 40% of the Japanese language are written using Chinese characters, Zen Buddhism was founded in China and then exported to Japan and Chinese classics like the Three Kingdoms are as big in Japan as they are in China. In the 1500's during the Imjin war, a war lasting 7 years, the Ming Dynasty of China drove out the Tokugawa Shogunate at the cost of widespread destruction in Korea.
