Several years ago after the melanine contaminated pet food came out- also attributed to china I think, I read an article.

I do not remember the name of it, but a significant veterinary oganization did some research. What they discovered was not that cinese manufacturers were stuffing the food with melanine to boost the protein content (?).

They concluded that the melanine came from rice/grains grown in asia. It seems that Asia uses a lot of GMO'd grains, at least rice, and in studying this, it was found that when herbicide was gmo'd into the seed, the seed or plant breaks it down at some point, and once of the components is melanine. It has been decided that there is an acceptable level of melanine for the seed or plant to generate. However, GMO companies have observed and recorded that not all seeds produce the levels that are acceptable. They label these as "renegade seeds".

The veterinary organization believed it was the accumulation of melanine from gmod grains that caused the problem. Apparently in the US that was also offered as an explanation but was quickly altered to the one most people heard.

I have also discovered in looking for foods for my pets, that probiotics which are usually found in dog food these days,are gmo'd and do not have to be labled as such in USA. Canada actually produces a list and may have some labeling requirements, which is how I even know about it since I found the list online by accident.

This is not to say that pet products produced in china are not filled with crap.

What I am saying is most products in pet food are questionable at best. Mainstream human products these days are dangerous enough.
