El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
I am the former user "Idgits". About 100 consistent followers and contributors and I created the most informative thread on El Hierro and the Canary Islands archipelago that GLP has ever seen. Thread: Best El Hierro Thread On GLP - Canary Islands - ACTIVITY HAS RETURNED - AGAIN! I have since deleted the account that I was using to start that thread, thus the reason it says "AC" now as the original poster.

During the course of that thread I removed all of the "Hi's" and "How are you's" and "bump's" until about page 500...which condensed the thread down to around 280 pages. It has since continued to grow and has become a true source of facts surrounding the earthquake swarm and eventual eruption that took place last year, ending early this year.

Since that eruption officially ended, Hierro has shot back into action several times. I believe we are on the 4th major swarm of activity that has occurred since the eruptive phase ended. It has been recommended by one of our most consistent and well informed users "Shenue" as well as others, to start a new thread to showcase the newest events occuring in Hierro. The previous eruption was incredible, teaching science a whole new concept and understanding of underwater eruptions. It also produced the most radioactive lava ever recorded.

The most incredible feat of Hierro though, is how much pressure it is capable of maintaining WITHOUT erupting. In the last swarm we saw such an incredible increase in pressure that any other geologic formation would've theoretically blown sky high. But not Hierro...it's always maintained it's strength. The current combined energy under Hierro from both magma flow and seismic energy released is basically unknown as IGN stopped recording all the joules together...they stopped the eruptive phase recording in May of this year...here is that chart [link to www.01.ign.es]

So...this new thread is to pick up where Hierro has brought us now. I need to be able to change the thread title as events occur and be able to alert people with that title in case something serious occurs. In addition, there is SO MUCH information in that past thread that it's difficult for new users and followers to sift through to the most recent activities. Below I have comprised a list of information and links relative to the old thread. It's information that took us a year plus to gather!

A recap of the last thread and some vital information about the island of Hierro in the archipelago of the Canary Islands.

-El Hierro poses just as much threat as any of the other islands-

"Update 07/08 – 10:21 UTC
An article in Diario El Hierro reports about some findings of the University of La Laguna. The professor indicates that eruption material from El Hierro is among the strongest eruption radioactive material known so far. Click here to read this (Spanish) article."

"The stones of the eruption El Hierro, the most radioactive in the world"

"The stones that surfaced as a result of volcanic earthquake crisis last year affected the island of El Hierro are the most radioactive in the world, told Efe Antonio Darwich physicist, professor, Department of Soil Science and Geology University of La Laguna."

Original page in spanish [link to www.diariodeavisos.com]

So...they are totally dismayed as to how these rocks could be so full of radiation? Humm...let's try this explanation!

Thread: OLD NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP SITE OFF EL HIERRO! OMG!

The United States used to use the coastal waters of El Hierro as a nuclear dumping ground. The idea that our nuclear waste has been drawn into the subversion plates, burnt down into the magma and then redistributed through El Hierro's underwater eruption is quite a possible scenario!

''
These eruptions are commonly phreatomagmatic eruptions, representing violent explosions caused by rising basaltic or andesitic magma coming into contact with abundant, shallow groundwater or surface water.

A site that you can monitor and view all boat traffic. This site was very helpful as we watched the observation boats that were collecting data on the previous eruptive phase. We have seen everything from Japanese cargo ships to Venzuelan naval gun boats to Russian military craft to search and rescue choppers to Lebanese freighters coming and going from Hierro's ports.

The National Data Buoy Center - If it ever hits the fan in Hierro, this site SHOULD display where the tsunami has reached and where it's headed, etc. It will display wave height and show wave speed on several buoys as well

Re: El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
In discussing the potential of tsunami activity from the Canaries, this was obtained. Note...it has been stated many times in the geological world that an ample eruption on one island could trigger eruptions or land slides on other islands. We have already seen La Palma react to Hierro's quakes...and La Palma contains the most noted threat for tsunami action. However...Hierro shows the most recent and largest bulk land slides.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

"Computer modelling indicates that the resulting initial wave may attain a local amplitude (height) in excess of 600 metres (1,969 ft) and an initial peak to peak height that approximates to 2 kilometres (1 mi), and travel at about 1,000 kilometres per hour (621 mph) (approximately the speed of a jet aircraft), inundating the African coast in about 1 hour, the southern coast of England in about 3.5 hours, and the eastern seaboard of North America in about 6 hours, by which time the initial wave would have subsided into a succession of smaller ones each about 30 metres (98 ft) to 60 metres (197 ft) high. These may surge to several hundred metres in height and be several kilometres apart but retaining their original speed."

Probably the best visual of what a tsunami would do from La Palma. Check page 3 specifically. La Palma has been more studied however, Hierro offers just as much potential with an 8 mile long cliff wall facing East that is just over a 1.5km high. And, a cliff wall that faces south that is 7 miles long and is also 1.5km high. The cliffs facing East HAVE collapsed in the past and the residue stretches out some 30 miles East over cover a 10,000 feet drop in elevation from the top of the cliffs to the base of the sea floor in the Atlantic. This is one very tall island.

I personally have put probably 10,000 hours into the old thread. Others, combined, is probably close to a million hours. Time spent researching, checking, editing, verifying, etc. It is a solid thread, it's just time to leave the old eruption and focus on this newest phase of activity. It is aggressively powerful and it's the 4th since the eruption. Each time we see new magma intrusions, new variations in the deformation and new elements of concern. The most recent activity also remains fairly focused and centralized verses the old eruptive phase the quakes were literally all over the map.

Good Morning All........AmTrap :-) Nice....new thread

Things are a little quieter this morning on/around El Hierro:

Update 17/09 – 08:38 UTC

- “Only” 30 earthquakes listed by IGN this morning
- Hypocenters : no change in depth (hypocenter or focal depth or depth are indicating the same = layer in the underground (crust or deeper) where the energy is generated
- Epicenters : same area than yesterday centering in the historic crater area
- GPS deformations :
Restinga : 1 cm further uplifting (Ultra Rapid) – stabilized on the longitude and latitude axis (= earlier movement to the South-East)
Pinar : 1 cm uplift – pushed 1 cm further to the North – stabilized on the longitude axis (= earlier movement to the East)
Frontera : no more uplifting, 0,5 cm to the North – no change on the longitude axis since long time
The plotters under our readers can try to trace this way the source of the magma

Ya know something...when we started talking about the nuclear dumps around the Canaries we were able to find several documents about it. They were difficult to find, but with digging we did find it. Now...I can't seem to find anything written anywhere. I'm wondering if we exposed things that someone didn't want known?

Your opinion is welcome...however, you should know...if you're truly from the Canaries...the island is full of tension and anxiety. The avcan facebook page has demonstrated that as well as Joke Volta's posts. The government has issued a pre-alert and IGN is calling for more studies on this newly started swarm. The past 7 days California had right at 300 tremors...and we're roughly 1,529 times the size of Hierro. Hierro had 180 in one day. So yeah...when that little island is having 4 times as many quakes as California in a day, AND all in a very small area (about 10 square miles verses California's 165,000 square mile area), AND they have the potential to unleash volcanic activity...you better believe it's something of interest.

OP, type 'Slope stability in the Canary volcanoes based on geotechnical criteria' into Google and click 'quick view' on the first link shown.

this entire area is a timebomb
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23900076

on page 4..

'5

As rock masses are constituted by a sequence of massive lava flows, scoriaceous and pyroclastic layers in uncertain proportions, it is expected that the equivalent Mohr-Coulomb parameters will correspond to intermediate values between the purely unweathered massive rocks and the purely pyroclastic massif. However, the relevance of the relative proportions between rock mass and pyroclastic, dramatically decreases when geologic conditions deteriorate. '

(translation - when magma is injected, and the ground above deforms, the status quo is disturbed, making a landslide FAR more likely!)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23900076

cont..

'Concerning this fact, three areas of special relevance have been highlighted for their potential risk of catastrophic landslides in the Canary Archipelago. 'Teide Stratovolcano' (Tenerife), with average slope gradient of 30 degrees, 'El Julan ' (El Hierro), with average slope gradient of 25 degrees and the 'Cumbre Vjeja Rift Zone' (La Palma), with average slope gradient of 25 degrees........ '

cont..

'All of them with slope heights higher than 1000m exhibit conditions of slope gradient that overcome the friction angle of their rock massifs and of low cohesion that became those areas as susceptible of suffering gigantic slides. (HERE IT COMES blink..) Internal cohesion will drop by shallow magma injection,..'

Look, BS-Tard, I am still here, and all is really fine: holiday makers, the sun, the ocean, 1000 times less tremors than in cali. The only issue is... the rains, not enough rain this year. THAT IS IT.

So yeah...when that little island is having 4 times as many quakes as California in a day, AND all in a very small area (about 10 square miles verses California's 165,000 square mile area), AND they have the potential to unleash volcanic activity...you better believe it's something of interest.

the only real anxiety here is over 50% unemployment.

Re: El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
Update 17/09 – 17:05 UTC
- 84 earthquakes until 16:11 UTC
- Another 2 shallow quakes at 10 and 11 km , both in the El Golfo, Sabinosa area. The phenomena described in the last update is being confirmed with these quakes. The Sabinosa – El Golfo area has become active again. We are however unsure whether IGN has deliberately omitted the quakes in this area when the strong swarm started. If this was not the case (what we should find very normal) then we can speak of a changing pattern. The following hours will give a better idea of the situation

Re: El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
I know that part of this was already posted, but I'm posting it also within this post so it is shown as part of the sequence of events so far today.

Update 17/09 – 20:01 UTC
- 95 earthquakes, all the recent ones at 20 km or deeper

Update 17/09 – 17:05 UTC
- 84 earthquakes until 16:11 UTC
- Another 2 shallow quakes at 10 and 11 km , both in the El Golfo, Sabinosa area. The phenomena described in the last update is being confirmed with these quakes. The Sabinosa – El Golfo area has become active again. We are however unsure whether IGN has deliberately omitted the quakes in this area when the strong swarm started. If this was not the case (what we should find very normal) then we can speak of a changing pattern. The following hours will give a better idea of the situation

Update 17/09 – 15:36 UTC
- Is the crust starting to show cracks ? Why are we writing this ? If IGN data are correct, we have noticed a number of shallower earthquakes the last couple of hours. Nothing to be scared off, but this is definitely a change in patterns versus earlier today and the 2 preceding days. From 12:27 until 14:39 (less than 3 hours) we have noticed 6 under 20 km earthquakes on a total of 17.
The shallowest being a 13 km, but also a 15 km and a couple of 18 km. Is the magma the cause ? IGN would probably know it but mostly keeps his information for international science conferences a couple of months later!
The shallowest one was recorded below the Sabinosa area, the area where the other 10 km were recorded last week.
- 71 earthquakes so far

Update 17/09 – 12:45 UTC
- 52 earthquakes so far (listed by IGN until 11:06 UTC). No change in depth patterns or epicenter area. I looks more and more that the island consists of solid rock where magma has a hard time to penetrate

Frontera : no more uplifting, 0,5 cm to the North – no change on the longitude axis since long time
The plotters under our readers can try to trace this way the source of the magma. Click here for the source of our data (courtesy Prof. Sagiya – University of Nagoya)
I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.
