Re: El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
I personally have put probably 10,000 hours into the old thread. Others, combined, is probably close to a million hours. Time spent researching, checking, editing, verifying, etc. It is a solid thread, it's just time to leave the old eruption and focus on this newest phase of activity. It is aggressively powerful and it's the 4th since the eruption. Each time we see new magma intrusions, new variations in the deformation and new elements of concern. The most recent activity also remains fairly focused and centralized verses the old eruptive phase the quakes were literally all over the map.

Shame that you invested so much time into non-event.

All is very god here, in Canary Islands.

Look, BS-Tard, I am still here, and all is really fine: holiday makers, the sun, the ocean, 1000 times less tremors than in cali. The only issue is... the rains, not enough rain this year. THAT IS IT.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23937329

Suspicous0bserver reports 410 tremors in 3.5 days, I would venture that is not a normal number, I would also suggest that that is actually more than California.

Refer to the map just a few pages down. Looks like the U.S. has screwed a LOT of people with their dumping. Many countries are dumping in reality, but the U.S. obviously has it's majority share.

you can see the migration of these quakes from the 13th September to today in those links. in order, from top to bottom it's the 13th in the first link to today in the last link.

all the action is going on directly beneath the cliffs

Your opinion is welcome...however, you should know...if you're truly from the Canaries...the island is full of tension and anxiety. The avcan facebook page has demonstrated that as well as Joke Volta's posts. The government has issued a pre-alert and IGN is calling for more studies on this newly started swarm. The past 7 days California had right at 300 tremors...and we're roughly 1,529 times the size of Hierro. Hierro had 180 in one day. So yeah...when that little island is having 4 times as many quakes as California in a day, AND all in a very small area (about 10 square miles verses California's 165,000 square mile area), AND they have the potential to unleash volcanic activity...you better believe it's something of interest.
 Quoting: American Trappers, LLC

the only real anxiety here is over 50% unemployment.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23937329

Which may be vastly caused by the fear from the past eruption, the green goo that poured out of that eruption, the fear of slides and closed beaches...all leading to a massive slam on the tourism. Keep denying it...we'll watch you be proved wrong...again.

We may be seeing the nudge already. Look at this. This is RSOE. Look at the pattern of these quakes. Zoom in all the way down over the canaries. The quakes are all right at the base of these cliffs. You destablize that area; everthing above it becomes destabilized.

Re: El Hierro / Canary Islands - Most Recent Information By The Most Diligent - And Recap Of Past Year
Good Morning all!

Update 18/09 – 08:01 UTC

- Only 10 earthquakes so far today. The swarm was very short-lived this time.
- Only the last one at 06:03 was shallower than the rest (11 km) – epicenter near Sabinosa
- Except for the 11 km earthquakes all other epicenters are located in the old crater area (like the images below)
- It is clear that there are 2 magma feeders at work , a weak one below the El Golfo – Sabinosa area and a main feeder who originates below the island and is searching for an exit. During the first eruption it succeeded in finding a system to reach the Las Calmas sea. During the second swarm, the western part of the island showed to be too strong to overcome. The current third swarm does not succeed to get to upper layers (very fortunate for the population on the island, and is subsiding already now
- Deformations
Restinga : slight uplift of approx. 0.5 cm
Pinar and Frontera : slight uplift and pressure to the North (both a couple of mm)
Deformations are confirming the earthquake trend, less inflation today than yesterday

Yesterday ended with 109 earthquakes (El Heirro).

Update 17/09 – 23:55 UTC

- The day ended at 109 earthquakes, about 2/3 of the number of yesterday
- The strength of the earthquakes decreased with less earthquakes above M2.5
- All the earthquakes of the last 8 hours of the day were deeper as 20 km

Hi AT, I am the one who suggested about making a new thread....

Thankyou for doing this new thread...Now the thread can be updated as & when needed....you never know what El hierro might bring..

I'm Gizzie by the way who contributed a little on your other thread...Too scared of logging in as I get an instant ban, I use the three mobile network in the UK and I tether my phone to laptop, the network changes my IP every time I turn my data off/on, so im guessing glp don't like it..

I will be getting proper home broadband soon, so will I will become a full member and contribute more to your thread then...I will still pop in & out with info but my user ID will change all the time..

Thanks again AT and also a big thank you to you Sheune for keeping us updated on this thread and the last one. Your contributions are highly appreciated....

Hi AT! Idigits.LOL It's TheresaEl. Found a paper from the royal society that might be of interest. Here is some info. and the link.

". Landslides on ocean-island flanks have been cited as posing a tsunami threat on a trans-oceanic scale (Ward & Day 2001), potentially comparable in magnitude to or even larger than the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami (Lay et al. 2005). While this extreme scenario can be questioned (Mader 2001; Wynn & Masson 2003), there is little doubt that the threat posed by ocean-island flank landslides is both real and significant. "

The quakes are continuing...I'm seeing about 20 that are visible on the seismograph however the total quakes for the day site is down...hasn't recorded since early this morning. Also of note...deformation is continuing at a pretty significant rate. I say...until the deformation stops, this swarm is not yet over.

could it be caused by pore pressurisation?

- 21 earthquakes until 19:32 this evening
- after a number of shallower earthquakes during the morning hours, seismicity returned to normal deeper layers this afternoon and evening
- epicenters from the last 10 earthquakes are scattered around the central and southern areas of the island

[link to earthquake-report.com]

these shallower quakes? are they indicative of pore pressurisation higher up in the volcano?

Good Morning..

2012-09-19 10:16

- 23 earthquakes in total yesterday, the last one being a M1.7 at 14 km
- 7 earthquakes so far this morning, 2 at a depth of 10 km (El Golfo and Las Calmas), the rest at approx. 20 km deep in the old crater area and El Pinar area
- GPS deformations :
Frontera : a few mm further inflated, a couple of mm to the North-East
Pinar : stabilised in horizontal and vertical axis (normal as with the decrease in number and strength of the earthquakes, the pressure below the center of the island has strongly subsided)
Restinga : comes as a surprise – Restinga is pushed a few mm to the east and has a further strong inflation of nearly 1.5 cm Ultra Rapid preliminary results)

The last part of your post caught me eye. 1.5 cm in restinga. That's huge when you figure the ground itself has moved that far. AND...there haven't been any significantly large quales going on. Strange how it could move that far or inflate that much without strong magmatic intrusion or quakes.

good point. However...wouldn't that lead to cracking? When the ground pops and cracks from thermal pressure it is an earth quake and registers as such. Shouldn't we be seeing quakes listed from that? Or...is the ground really that flexible?

I think your right AT....

What we got to remember as well is, the quakes are quite deep...I don't think it is pressure causing the uplift...probably more likely the 4th injection of magma under the island that is causing the uplift..dont forgot also, after the 3rd injection not long ago, there was no eruption, so we have a 4th lot of magma coming up under the 3rd, this causing the uplift....

Don't get me wrong, there is pressure building up, but it remains to be seen if the 4th injection will actually cause a new eruption...probably depends on the amount of magma coming up and also the speed of it...

Either way, El Hierro continues to through conundrums our way.. even the scientists studying it are still at a lost as to what is really going on below that Island..

Strange how it could move that far or inflate that much without strong magmatic intrusion or quakes.

not really op..

could it be caused by pore pressurisation?

''Thermally induced pore pressures appear capable of
developing large uplift forces beneath a potentially un-
stable block''

from that link above.

good point. However...wouldn't that lead to cracking? When the ground pops and cracks from thermal pressure it is an earth quake and registers as such. Shouldn't we be seeing quakes listed from that? Or...is the ground really that flexible?

when water heats up, it expands. perhaps so much water is down there in the crust, slowly heating up, the expansion compared to the area being heated down there is very small, but the expansion at the surface is very noticeable, especially with the equipment at their disposal?

also, the fact the rock down there is utterly saturated, the lubrication of the water is making rocks slip past each other with ease, and also the heating is making the rocks more malleable, and easier to deform?

i don't know, just throwing it out there! come on, we can work this shit out!

notice what the Ayatollah of Iran said today about the USA, btw?
