These pointless rocks extend Japan's legal jurisdiction far beyond what it would be able to claim if China owned them, and keeps China well away from getting anywhere close the main islands. While their material value is next to nothing their tactical value is priceless.

The oil, the oil. Don't forget the oil (and possibly other resources). It's not the rocks themselves, it's the exclusive economic zone they provide. The maritime boundary between China and Japan is a larger issue, these islands are just a part of that.

While true, Obama also announced a WTO case against China today. So, this could just be a shift from China to Japan for US trade since Japan owns a lot of US debt & paper, and buys US oil. The US has to support Japan for this reason, above China.

China has a very small middle-class so I dont see it as a great loss of consumer buying power.

No telling about those Jp/Cn trade numbers anyway since there is a good deal of manufacturing done in China rather than sales. Move plants back to Japan, problems solved. Better for Japan and everyone else involved.
