Russia reveals vast diamond source under 62 mile wide asteroid crater which could supply world markets for next 3,000 years
[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

Russia is about to start tapping into a huge source of diamonds that could supply the world market for the next 3,000 years.

Scientists estimate there are 'trillions of carats' lying beneath a 35million-year-old asteroid crater in Siberia - more than ten times the global stockpile.

The Kremlin has known about the reserves under the 62-mile-wide impact zone since the 1970s.

But it has kept it a secret until now because it was already reaping big profits in what back then was a heavily controlled market.

'The resources of super-hard diamonds contained in rocks of the Popigai crypto-explosion structure are by a factor of ten bigger than the world's all known reserves,' he said.

'We are speaking about trillions of carats. By comparison, present-day known reserves in Yakutia (a Russian mine) are estimated at one billion carats.'

The stones at Popigai are known as 'impact diamonds' which result when an object like a meteor strikes an existing diamond deposit.

They are also unique, which will make them even more sought-after in high-precision scientific and industrial markets.

Pokhilenko said: 'The value of impact diamonds is added by their unusual abrasive features and large grain size.

Diamnonds are not rare and should only have industrial value. The diamond industry buys all of the supply and are able to set the price because of the demand from consumer...

The entire diamond industry is pathetic. I understand diamonds are great at being hard. The industrial applications are great.
But as far as the jewelry industry? it is disgusting how the masses flock to the diamond stores to get engaged, anniversaries, etc. They are pieces of rock. Granted they are sparkly, but doe that make them worth thousands of dollars??? People are so easily led. Someone told them you can't get married without one, and you dont love someone without them, and every jumped on the wagon.
I got married this year, and I made sure my husband knew not to waste his money on a diamond. Just a titanium band, to show the world I am married was all I felt was necessary.
diamonds suck.

Why can't I have an asteroid crater on my property. I'd be rich! With my luck the crater would be where my house was.

Diamonds are semi precious at best, that is until this news article hit the headlines. I wouldn't pay anything for a diamond now.

I hope this type of thing doesn't happen to gold and silver.

Careful they are probably Zylok/Xylok

[link to en.wikipedia.org]

Mr Smith is a Xylok, a member of a crystalline race which crashed to Earth as a meteorite some 60 million years in Earth's past. It was trapped underneath the surface of the Earth until the eruption of Krakatoa brought a single, small Xylok to the attention of geologists. Sarah Jane received the crystal from a geologist friend as an aid to her studies in volcanic activity. She found that the crystal could communicate with her laptop; it revealed to her that it could help her track alien life and protect the earth. To this end it is the core of the supercomputer known as Mr Smith.

I'm to assume that now we have discover a new type of event that produces diamonds. It's possible that the pressures and heat from a collision combine with the carbon is landing on could produce diamonds.

Well, it would help manufacturing business that would produce cheaper products that more people can afford.

There is so much diamonds there, they can still make shitload of money by volume. Big loss for jewelry world but big win for manufacturing world.

Damn, the de Beers empire can't call those blood diamonds to keep as much a monopoly position as possible.
The de beers dynasty invented it's 'rare' occurrence to jack up prices but it was always readily available.

This discovery has absolutely ZERO effect on the price of diamonds for jewelery. This is specific ONLY to industrial and scientific use. The price you pay for your girlfriend's engagement ring is going nowhere and DeBeers is not worried at all.
