When/If TSHTF, if you have the ability to stay away from cities, don't underestimate...ATTN PREPPERS
Some of you (like me) have places to get to away from populated areas. Some of you are good woodsmen and women. Hunters etc...Prepers.

Even if you have all your preps in order. Land to grow food. Protection. Hunting and fishing gear. Gas and stabilizer. Everything you could think of to keep you and your family going strong when/if TSHTF, never underestimate the value of a pack of hounds. The more the merrier.

I have 2 beagles, a 7 year old female with 7 good years in the woods tracking, and a 1 year old pup who has been in the woods a great number of hours since she was 8 weeks old.

I'll try to get at least 2 more if TSHTF. Together as part of your family they offer hunting companionship, protection, an alert system, and a 1st line of defense. If you treat them well they'll always be there for you.

If you can, get some hounds.

Re: When/If TSHTF, if you have the ability to stay away from cities, don't underestimate...ATTN PREPPERS
Beagles are scent hounds, developed primarily for tracking hare, rabbit, and other game. They have a great sense of smell and tracking instinct that sees them employed as detection dogs for prohibited agricultural imports and foodstuffs in quarantine around the world. Beagles are intelligent, and are popular as pets because of their size, even temper, and lack of inherited health problems.

Alongside the Bloodhound, the Beagle has one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog.

The Beagle has an even temper and gentle disposition. Described in several breed standards as "merry", they are amiable and typically neither aggressive nor timid, although this depends on the individual. The Beagle generally seems calmer once mentally matured, exhibiting naughty, puppy-like behaviour up until 2-4 years of age. They enjoy company, and although they may initially be standoffish with strangers, they are easily won over. They make poor guard dogs for this reason, although their tendency to bark or howl when confronted with the unfamiliar makes them good watch dogs.

I live just outside Halifax, but have land 100kms away in the middle of no where. Off 2 dirt roads, and down a Jeep trail. Long story how we got to own the land, but a farmer on the other side of the lake sold it to us years ago.

I work in Sales.

My Advice...if TS does not HTF, get into a big box Lowe's, or Home Depot and apply yourself. Strive for management and make t known. You'd be surprised what you can achieve financially in a fairly short amount of time.

I suspect your right.
Scary thought.
I'm greatful for what I have. Our cabin has 4 bedrooms, woodstove, good sized loft upstairs.
Our garden is about 20 x 20 feet, lots of great produce there this year. Panrty is full of dry goods (rice, pasta, soups, KD, canned milk)I have 4 cord of dry wood and about 2 cord that's not fully dry. I think I've planned pretty well.

On the serious side, this is a good thread and if I were looking for a dog to find me some meat, it would for sure be a beagle. Think they can smell critters 2 states away and nothing seems to please them more than locating them.

Climate change will end your delusions of growing food and harvesting game. Not to mention you have got to feed your animals as well, if they do no succumb to the climate changes, pollution, et al.

Also, a small population of people will wipe country sides clean of small and large animals in short order. Louis and Clarks' small party wiped out large and small game animals on the north west coast 2 days walk around their camp in part of a one fall and one winter.

If it were not for the natives in the area bringing them food, they would have starved to death.

You are forgetting the population in this country is 300 million. You really think all those living in large cities are just going to sit in their rooms and starve without moving into the country side? You really think you will somehow be able to 'hide' where you are?

In the past, large numbers of people walked from the east to the west across this country in relatively short order.

Is there a road to your house? Hard to hide food and shelter with a road leading right to it.

But, its good to dream and it sounds like you got it already, that is awesome, enjoy it, cause it aint gonna last forever.

My dogs are English Mastiffs, two of them, 200+pounds. I heard Mastiffs were good for bear hunting, and bounty hunters. We do have bears here, I guess they'll be our neighbor hood watch dogs. Nothing but woods and farmland here.
