Re: need some advice from you old people
(incoming wall of text)

Hello, internet shamans, drop some wisdom on me.

As a 21 year old...

I'm young you know, supposed to be gaining the life skills to establish a footing in the world. I happen to live in a society that requires me to make money in order to survive, and so I go to university in order to gain skills necessary for a practical career. Beyond the occasional manual labor job my dad would hook me up with, I've never had a legitimate job. I feel completely inexperienced in how I should go about functioning in the world.

Then again, the future is so uncertain these days, I don't feel as if my plans matter.

I'm looking out the window and the entire fucking planet is going mad, WWIII seems inevitable, tyranny and martial law is just around the corner, the economy is collapsing, foot riots will occur within the near future. At the moment it all seems rather bleak.

It's weird you know, I think about you old folks, people born in the mid-1940s to late 50s, we were raised in completely alien environments. You babyboomers were raised during the Golden Age Leave it to Beaver America (i know that's highly idealized vision), economy was kicking ass, 1950s-1970s music was great, if you wanted to go and work all you had to do was get a job, which was easy. The dollar was really worth something. If you were clever during the 1980s-90s you could make a lot of money fast with all the computer industries springing up. Sure there was a lot of bad shit going on, just as any time in history, but it seemed nice in a lot of ways.

I feel like a parasite on my parents, they're getting older and all, and I'm a young robust male - I should go out on my own and make something of myself. I want to help my parents, they brought me into this world and I should smoothly bring them out of it, don't want to put stress on them. At the moment though I feel completely stuck since I'm having legitimate troubles acquiring a job, so I just go along and continue my schooling (which is mainly just propaganda and half-truths). It's quite frustrating.

I've spent time organizing my family for when the shit hits the fan, got food and defense measures, actively forming networks with trusted people.

I guess I'm curious in what some of you older baby-boomers think about the circumstances that young-adults find themselves in, and how/what we should be focusing on?

Your parents love you. Do what you can to help and don't worry about finding a job. If you can you can. If you can't you can't. We're in the middle of a Depression. Do what you can do to help around the house or with any family business.

Well... As a man twice your age (and then some) I can honestly say that you face no different adversity than I did. Shit, I remember when Reagan was the Anti-Christ and the seals had been broken. I remember worrying about the Sun exploding and ending all life as we know it in the Early 80's (Thank you "In Search of" and Leoard Nemoy) But here we are... Many, MANY years later and all is the same.

Move forward. Learn, Love Laugh. Tomorrow will ALWAYS come. (And if it doesn't, you won't really have much to say about it.)

As far as your comment regarding:
I feel like a parasite on my parents, they're getting older and all, and I'm a young robust male - I should go out on my own and make something of myself.

Use it. Use it to motivate you to better yourself.

Yay! I'm not old! But honestly, I don't envy you young'uns AT ALL right now. Just think of this life as an adventure and do the best you can. You do have your head and thinking in the right place at least. Most of your crowd has their head so far up their arses they can't see the forest through the trees.

Do get a job - ANY job...

No, I didn't miss anything. The word geezer was not used in the OP's post. It was used in the post immediately after yours, the one in which your advice was to "shut the fuck up". You need to go back to one of the rainbow and unicorns singing Kumbaya threads. I can do this shit all night long.

Today's generation has a lot of advantages, older generations had advantges too, yet different. Every generation also had it's own distinct disadvantages, just like this one does...

Make the best of what you can while you can and don't focus on the things that other generations had that were their creations, create your own new things.

I can tell you, its all downhill from where you are.

Each year brings more ideals lost and dreams shattered, as life batters you into the trauma of accepting a more miserable, downtrodden position than you imagined could possibly await you.

Eventually you might have a kid and that's the final nail in the coffin; at that point they have you by the nads forever because your genes and hormones make you a slave to "loving" the thankless little goblin your partner (who comes to despise you) shat out. Because of these ties that bind, you will accept even more miserable working and living conditions, drifting through life a ghostlike shadow of your former self, a burned-out and overworked husk jeered at by both the society that jerks you around and the very child you've killed your inner dreams to support. Eventually, when your body is gray and withered, you may have a few megre years of rest before the phsysical pains of ageing will overtake your reality and drown out every other concern as you slide quickly towards death.

Haha! Kind of what this guy says.

I would use some of what this guy says but in a more positive way. Humans are sort of programmed to do things sometimes: go to school (which is the first stage of social programming) get married, have kids, work your ass off to support your new family, which stops you from having time to educate yourself more (or, more sinisterly, no time to take part in a revolution). Do you get a picture?

And yes, we all start out as gleamy-eyed optimists, & these dreams are usually crushed by the real world, so most people turn to sex, drink &/or drugs to numb the pain. There is another clue right there! It is important to keep track of your current dreams & goals & try to fulfill them. Avoid self-destruction by the substance abuse. Stay positive no matter what!!

I have witnessed Australia change from what we have called 'The lucky country' to pretty much 'The same as everybody else country.' In the past, you could leave your job at morning break & have another one by lunchtime! This abundance of jobs & manufacturing used to have a result of people gaining on-the-job skills. The jobs are disappearing & the skills are just not being learned anymore. There's another clue! SKILLS!!!

Good luck young mate

Re: need some advice from you old people
In this life, you have to look at yourself as a
commodity.

Definition of commodity:

"In economics, a commodity is the generic term for any marketable item produced to satisfy wants or needs. Economic commodities comprise goods and services."

A perfect example of what I mean is to watch American idol and see what the 3 judges are drinking out of. It is a glass that has Coca-Cola branded on it. The judges do this because coke pays them millions of dollars so that their product will be associated with the 3 judges... and vise-versa BTW. They are a commodity that are paid ridiculously
large sums of $. If they were not smart they would only drink water because water is just as thirst-quenching but the judges know they have a "marketable item ", which is: "Their popularity in the public eye".

This world has no use for people with low, self-esteem issues. business people like confidence and those willing to face their fears and go after what they want. It took me over 50 years (I'm a child of the 60's)to lean that lesson and that's because I had no one to teach it to me. I now deal with some pretty successful people in my line of work and they are no different than you or I except they have money and they are not afraid of success - They are not afraid to take risks and use their abilities to get ahead of the pack.

If you wanted to you could go into the most prestige business in your town and ask to speak to the owner and
tell them you would like to work for their company. Or, you could throw your resumes to the proverbial wind and see what hand fate will deal you. The decision is yours to make but be sure of this: You do have a choice in where you go in this life - If you want to be a cork tossed upon the waves and drift where the tides takes you then you will have to live with that life-choice. On the other hand, if you study the wind, acquire a compass and get yourself a sail, with a little ingenuity and work, you will go in the direction of your own choosing.

Someone once said: "If you have NOWHERE specific you're headed in life, don't be surprised when you end up there."

Life is about setting your compass and come hell or high
water, you stick to the set coordinates.

Seem impossible?

'Baby-steps' is all it takes!

Baby-steps is the answer the monk would give you if you made it to the mountain top.

It's so profound it's almost too ridiculous to contemplate... and yet, those who do, begin the journey to their destination.

"Baby-steps" is how greatness is achieved.

College is not the advantage it used to be. College is becoming more and more a waste of your life, as the education you think you are getting is so superficial and politically correct it is useless to you when you finish. Truly my best advice to you is to get your two years of basics, then go to a trade school and learn a trade. There are so few young people willing to learn a trade now, there will be a demand for anyone that can do anything with their hands and brain. It is far easier for them to sit in a class room and pretend they are learning something that will benefit them down the road. Just today I saw where a coal miner was making more than Harvard grads. Don't be afraid to do manual labor and don't feel it is degrading. When the plumber comes to work on my sink, I respect and appreciate him to the fullest. Point is, hard work and training in a trade will pay off much faster than a class room. Plus, knowing a trade makes it easier to start a business of your own someday.

Re: need some advice from you old people
IF.....

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

OP, I don't believe WW3 is around the corner, I believe we still have a couple of years before it starts.

However, the situation is building up till there, and the economy and society might and probably wil get worse till there. Lot's of things will happen.

For the ones who survive WW3 and all the bad days, at least in terms of employment, I believe it'll be easy, since after a war, there's alot of rebuilding/reconstruction to be done.

Maybe a lot will have to be built and prepared even before the war starts, so there's a chance employment will get better even before in the near future before everything starts to fall apart rapidly.

But in good or bad times, we have to live one day at a time, and not worry about the future. Since you're studying, if employment gets better, you'll have better chances.

My advice
Do not get married, have children, join a religion or the military.................
Get all verbal agreements in writing and doccument all your work with recepts and photoes. Never put all your trust in anyone. Look to yourself for all your needs and not depend on others. Live within your means and do not go into debt. Do not help thoes unwilling to help themselves. Learn a trade. Save for rainy days, old age, breakdowns etc rather than giving what you earn away, be frugal. Put away your pride and ego, have a thick skin. Look out for con-men they are everywhere and do not be disapointed when everyone you know lies and stabs you in the back. Guard your heart, do not let emotions rull your life. Do not work too hard and have fun, you only live once. Do not spend too much time in the city, get country fresh air and in touch with nature.

Spend this time living with folks to learn skills they can teach you. How to fix the car, plumbing, building stuff, growing garden and about life.

I regret everyday I did have the above wisdom back then.
good luck,
from granny

Well said, hard work does wear out the body faster though so get a trade not so hard on the body. Septic tank pumpers make more than doctors. Working for yourself is great in you fallow my other advice, get everything in writing, no verbal agreements, doccument everthing you do, do not trust anyones word and charity cases will turn themselves back into a charity case in no time and destroy all your hard work, rip you off and come back expecting more.

Re: need some advice from you old people
I have worked with several college kids recently going through the same kind of thing.

You can't live life thinking about tomorrow, because then you forget to live today.

I agree with another poster who said something about having skills.

Think of what it is you want to do with your time. Your hobbies should give you a good idea where to focus, and just pick something. Perhaps not everywhere, but just about anywhere, there are people needing apprentices. Electricians are always looking for help, and are willing to train you, and pay you if you're willing to learn the trade, and be on top of your game.
Carpenters and painters are always looking for help. They can't always pay some guy 15-20 bucks an hour or more for trained journeymen, but need help, and that someone willing to follow along would be great.

Maybe you've already considered those things. If not, though, and your lucky enough to be in an area where there is that kind of work still going on, then give that a shot.
Learn a skill, and become good at it. Be inventive in ways you can create work for yourself.
Never hurts to gain extra skills either.

Re: need some advice from you old people
1. Job - it used to be that people wanted to hire someone who had been at their previous job at LEAST seven years, preferably more, because this showed loyalty. Well guess what, nobody values loyalty anymore. Now they like to hire people who have been at their current job for two to three years. They expect each new job to be a promotion, it shows you have an energetic, self-centered, competitive spirit which they will use to their advantage until they have sucked the life out of you. Much as I think we have too much government, if you can stomach the thought you might want to consider a government job. I say this only because you would have a pension of some kind. SOMEBODY is going to fill that cubicle so why not you. Do I sound cynical? Well yes I am. I lived my life pretty much free as a bird but I never really took the time to actually think it through what it means to be of retirement age. Shoot, I used to travel all over the world, I've lived in different countries, and had experiences I could write a book about, but when you get toward the latter part of your life, the prospect of having to work until the day you die at your desk is really really depressing. It is expensive to live in this world, and you may also have other people depending on you, so the idea of a pension gives a blessed reassurance that you won't have to live under a bridge at age 65. I also liked someone's idea above about being an engineer, there are almost limitless kinds of engineers and they all make good money. I don't know about pensions, I think they rely on 401k's. Unless you became a government engineer, hey there's an idea.

2. House - as soon as you can, buy a house. It can be an inexpensive one, and if you can find something with an income apartment all the better, your renter will be helping you pay off your mortgage. It doesn't have to look like Home and Gardens, a modest house is fine; the point is, if you don't buy a house, you will spend all that money on rent for the next thirty years and at the end have nothing to show for it. If that money is going toward a mortgage, at the end of thirty years you have a place that you OWN to live in for relatively free, which makes your pension seem a little larger. Right now is a rare moment in real estate history, historic low interest rates and very depressed housing prices. I can guarantee that the older you get, the harder it is to break in to the real estate game. My sister bought a house when she got married at age 25, and they rode the equity wave all the way up and ended up in a custom home on the lake. I decided to be footloose and fancy free, and by the time I wanted to settle down, I could not afford to get into the game. Ouch.

Caveat - I don't even know if there will be a next year so I don't know how useful my advice will be. But if life does go on, you had better be freaking sure you are pretty close to the top of the heap. Money is going to be even more important for your very survival. Learn how to play the game, even if it seems phony (it is); do not be their victim, how they love to toy with their victims, the poor.

You want to be looking years down the road and make your moves ahead of the pack. For instance, I moved out of the suburbs a year ago. Everyone else I know stayed put. Odds are very good that rural property will soon become very valuable and suburban property will drop like a rock.

Today's generation has a lot of advantages, older generations had advantges too, yet different. Every generation also had it's own distinct disadvantages, just like this one does...

Make the best of what you can while you can and don't focus on the things that other generations had that were their creations, create your own new things.

Good advice there. We didnt have things handed to us. It was hard to survive. You can always get a job in construction, they are always building and tearing things down. they make good money and you can learn a trade while working and getting a good paycheck.

Learn multiple practical skills, either through local community college courses or through a willingness to 'apprentice' yourself to someone skilled in those trades.

Avoid the debt trap. Save, and pay-as-you-go.

Understand that the military is a nothing more than a corporate strong-arm enforcement scam in this day and age.

Don't have kids unless you have the means and the determination to support them until they can also be self-sufficient too.

Don't give up on the ideals that your parents had when they planned a family.

The world isn't ending but is IS changing - rapidly.

There will be many emerging opportunities as these changes take hold.

Switch off the TV. Learn elsewhere and use discernment to filter the truth from the propaganda.

Think positive!

Re: need some advice from you old people
It's not as fun as you make it sound OP. We had the Cuban missile crisis when everyone was into building bomb shelters and afraid the the A bomb. We had the Vietnam War with a draft where 18 year olds HAD to go to combat and many didn't make it back. We had to sleep in our cars overnight so we wouldn't lose our place in line to get gas on odd or even days. Computers were still a great unknown so only a few could see the possibilities...hind sight is always 20/20. But the music was good.

However if I had to do it all over again? I would find the one thing I really love in life and gear my career towards that so it's not like work. Time flies by real fast OP and sometimes you take any old job to get by and you end up being stuck there a long time. What you put into learning now will benefit you for a lifetime.

If you don't know what you love yet...think about skilled services people always need that make good money. Plumbers, electricians, computer programers, mechanics...these are valuable trades you can learn at a trade college. The courses are not very long, they're affordable, you make great contacts and when you finish they usually have leads who call into the school looking for well trained students. You gotta start at the bottom, sure, ....but in the long run it will make you good money.

Good luck OP...remember, you get out of life the exact same amount you put into it.

One more thing OP...family is everything. Find a good woman and have a family with her...enjoy ever phase with them...so when you get old you won't be 55 and alone with your dog unable to find anyone to date.

Just forget all the advice from everyone and do this one thing. Get on your knees and ask Jesus to be part of your life. I'm not even joking dude this world we are in is about to be burnt up. It truely is hopeless unless you have a way out with Jesus.

What gets you excited?

What can you hardly wait to do each week?

What do you dream of?

What is your dream career?

THAT'S what you should be planning to go for.

Us old people may be able to help you figure how to plan for it once you can answer these questions.

Re: need some advice from you old people
You don't call people old when you ask a question. Next time I recommend wise. Oh wise ones ......

During the last depression my grandfather decided he could only send one son to college (financially speaking) so he chose one. My dad never got over it and put all of his kids that wanted to go to college all the way through on his dime. He was the unchosen one. It's practically a depression and your in school, it's a gift, you are fortunate. Let the criticism begin!

He did self-educate himself but when he spoke to congress as he was invited to do more than once they shilled him for not having gone to college.

For not getting an education during a depression he was shilled.

So if you stay in college after you become politically active and work your way to getting invited to speak at congress this will not be the shill they use on you.
