I have a small business and I feel guilty taking people's money
I have been in business for 4 years (It's just a side thing i grossed $10k last year). What I do is really enjoyable and easy. I feel guilty taking people's money. Not for small jobs, but for big one's where they are giving me hundreds and hundreds of dollars for such easy enjoyable work. I know I provide a service, am licensed and have to pay for my time and advertising etc. but seriously- does anyone else feel like this too??

Re: I have a small business and I feel guilty taking people's money
what business you in?

I used to do a home computer business thing... formatting computers and reinstalling the factory settings...

Charged 50 bucks a pop... made good money!!!

i kinda felt guilty cos I wasnt really doing anything other than a few clicks here and there...

but the local computer shop charged $120 to do the same thing... So that made me feel a lil better... cos i was giving a discount.

the computer shop dude was a dick and charged 50 bucks to save 1 gigs worth of info on a DVD

I charged 15 bucks for that service and saved 4 gigs worth... that was the price of the flash drive... i basically just sold them a flash drive... I made no money on that... If they wanted more space I ordered them a bigger drive and they paid for it... I worked with my customers

I wanted to give people a fair deal and it was certainly better than the computer shop dude

there were a few cases that I did it for free... very few lol

but one night i had 20 computers going at the same time...

i dont do that any more... why dont I?!?! lol

NEVER feel guilty about charging a fair price for quality work. Its why you started the business in the first place.

Unless it's illegal or unethical then don't feel bad. You don't make anyone do it, right?

Re: I have a small business and I feel guilty taking people's money
Yeah, I used to feel the same way. But we shouldn't. The problem is most of us haven't been properly taught about commerce, what money is and how it works.

Don't think of money as some sort of endgame. What you are doing is trading. I'm sure you've heard that term before.

Actually, you are trading your products / services for other products and services. Money is simply a representation of products and services.

If you dug a small hole for someone and they traded you 10 apples for your time and labor, would you feel bad? I bet you wouldn't. So, if he or she pays you in money and you go buy 10 apples, what's the difference. Again, it's trading one thing of value for another.

OK, let me give you a personal example. I built a website for $1200 bucks. It took me a few days! A week later the guy called me and said he scored a $6,000 dollar contract from the website.

It doesn't matter whether you like the work or it comes easy to you. The market does not care about that. It cares about the exchange of value and whether your product or service is "worth" it for them.

Good luck with your business.

Dont feel guilty that is what business is all about and you need to keep your prices pretty much the same as everyone elses. Giving a discount is good business and should make you feel better that you are doing that so dont feel guilty.

I hate charging for my work I'm in a constant conflict with the capitalist machine, I fix computers and mow lawns I charge the lowest rates going and live in poverty.
In the UK it's only cowboys and rip off merchants that make a decent living - capitalism sucks and is totally evil imo.

in most cases - to makes lots of money - you have to have no conscience - you need to go for the throat as much as possible - until then - you will just survive

OP is an Obama shill bot. SOCIALISM WOW!

I charge people $60 per hour to make auto repair house calls and sell them the parts at wholesale cost.

I make as much as a doctor and they think they are getting a sweet deal.

I do this because the American auto repair industry is 100% corrupt and repulsive.

This is what living at the end of an age is like...

Your growing sense of REALITY while presently living in a completely falsified matrix.

You simply have recognized the OBSOLETE predatory nature of this absurd system.

Its predatory lines-of-force are desolving in the PRESENCE of escalating LIGHT.

LIGHT naturally sorts (for want of a better word) and its action within one, is NOT NECESSARILY CONSCIOUS.

However, the LIGHT can trigger extreme eruptions of ego (in the majority, war & rage extreme panic-profitablity) as it triggers eruptions of REAL-ESSENCE-ETERNITY-BEING in the minority...

You realize there is nothing special about the service you provide, and it is something that anyone with a mind set to do so could do on their own.

You would feel more accomplished to teach others how to help themselves rather than helping them at each opportunity for which they seek out help.

It's a conflict between the archetype in your heart and that of the entrepreneur being pushed onto everyone in order to get us to compete against each other for resources we want instead of helping each others' needs with what we already have.

I know exactly how you feel. I've fixed countless computers only to find myself begging the owners to please come up with some other way besides giving me cash for my troubles if they insist on doing something in return. I have to be careful to whom I say, "Seriously, thanks is enough", because some people will take offense to such a statement for reasons I cannot fathom.

I know it can be hard to stop the feelings of guilt from creeping in on the big payouts. Whatever they offer to pay you, it is worth being spent in their eyes. You feel as though you are ripping them off, but that's simply not the case. Resting assured that your clients do not feel ripped off should help ease the guilt.

I don't know if you do follow-ups after jobs. If not, maybe doing so to see if your clients are happy x number of weeks after the job is done could help some too.
