Australia HALTS Sheep exports... Pakistan 2 cull 21,000 sheep say positive 4 salmonella- Australia says only 2 sick
The temporary stop to issuance of export licences places at risk the country's livestock industry. As a result of the temporary ban, the export of 200,000 sheep is in limbo. About 75 per cent of sheep that Australia exports are raised in Western Australia.

Bahrain initially rejected the Australian animal shipment which Pakistan accepted but changed its mind after two laboratory tests confirmed some of the sheep are diseased. Karachi authorities ordered the culling of the 21,000 sheep but the importer secured a court injunction.

However, Pakistan insisted it would still proceed with the culling to protect human health, while Australian authorities continue to insist the sheep are healthy and certified fit for export and human consumption.

Unless the problem is solved soon, he warned farmers may be forced to shoot their flock.

The return to the Australian economy of sheep exports to the Middle East was around $286 million in 2009-2010. WIth the remainder of the global sheep meat exports in the same period worth around $1.5 billion.

Big blow to the Australian pocket if it goes on too long.

I didnt realise they sent live sheep that far but here is some information about it..

The RSPCA believes that the live export of animals for slaughter should be replaced with an increased trade in chilled and frozen meat products.

Three to four million sheep every year board massive cargo ships bound for the Middle East. For sheep earmarked for the live export trade, the journey from the farm to the port can be 1,000 km or more. They are crammed in pens, 3 sheep per square metre, for the 2 - 3 week journey. Some ships carry as many as 100,000 sheep.

Each year around 37,000 sheep die on board these ships - from starvation, disease, injury, heat stress and pneumonia.

Upon arrival in the Middle East

Sheep are offloaded in countries with no or unenforceable animal welfare laws.
They are feed-lotted for further fattening.
They may be on-sold to individuals or merchants.
Sheep may be subjected to rough, inhumane handling and transportation.
They are slaughtered by having their throat cut, without being stunned first.
They are killed in ways that would be illegal in Australia.

Australian firm says only two sheep are infected: immediate halt to culling demanded

Stephen Meerwald, Managing Director of Wellard Rural Exports of Australia, claimed that "the animals had no health issues when they departed the Australian Port and reached the Karachi Port.
He demanded that culling of the sheep should immediately be stopped till the findings of independent international experts and labs were available. He also demanded that the issue should be resolved on immediate basis as it was sending a negative message to business community around the world.
Dr Habil Ulrich Wernery, claimed to be the expert who inspected the sheep in Bahrain, claimed that only two cases of disease were noticed in the entire consignment. The expert, who was invited by the Australian company, further claimed that existing animals were fit/ healthy. Slaughtering live animals for no reason was a shameful act, he said. Melissa Kelly said "we are confused and concerned that why the animals are being culled in Pakistan".

We have Islamic butcherys here.
Why not get them to slaughter the sheep locally and send the frozen product overseas like the poster above suggested.

There's no need in 2012 to send live overstock overseas to be slaughtered with modern refrigeration methods.
