'Honey bees are dying. This is a global phenomenon and a worldwide problem affecting food availability.

Like climate change, the decline of honey bees is not unprecedented. There were great die offs of honey bees reported as early as the year 950 A.D. in Ireland, called the “Great Mortality of Bees”.

This repeated in Ireland is 992 and 1443. The great die-off crossed the pond in 1903 when 2,000 colonies died in Cache Valley, Utah. Three years later, 100% of hives died on the Isle of Wight, UK. And then, in 1996 and again in 2006, Pennsylvania beekeepers reported alarming numbers of honey bee die offs. These die-offs are continuing today, but under the auspice of a new name, Colony Collapse Disorder.'

Re: Did you notice bees in these days?
I've seen more this year than last year-I live in NJ. However some are extra rageful (chasing me around the parked car twice before finding something else to do!) and some were so docile they barely moved ( I was able to swoosh it off a woman's shirt where it clung for dear life and ended up walking on the ground-not flying at all-no I didn't hurt it-I gently swooshed). I don't think they were the same species of bee.

In nature, can an animal kill hisself?

Look at the video posted. I notice that as well: in about just few hours only, they can die.

Honey bees represent only a small fraction of the approximately 20,000 known species of bees.

Re: Did you notice bees in these days?
Not exaclty "bees" but hornets which i got stung by 5-6 times about 2 weeks ago just by mowing my lawn, when i got to mowing around a certain tree on my property, i noticed a few things flying around and before i realized what they were... BAM! stung 3 times. Ran down the hill and got stung again(one apparently was inside my shirt). Ripped my shirt of and continued running, got to about 75' away from the tree and one just flew up, landed on the inside of my thumb and stung me again. That's the last time i ever mow my fucking lawn, fuck that.

Sounds like a wood hornet. Ornery critters best avoided.

I am a beekeeper & I can tell you that their cycle is off by about 2 weeks this year. I even had a 2nd year hive swarm -- very unusual.

I went to harvest honey after Labor Day weekend & got NOTHING. Not because the bees made no honey -- the honey boxes were filling up in late July quite nicely -- but because the bees had already moved all the honey down in the lower 2 boxes of the hive where they overwinter.

They are battening down the hatches early for some reason.

Mid Atlantic area here.
