no, but a freakish looking thing. Looked like a yellow jacket on steroids. I started noticing a them few years ago. I dont know what it is, BUT ITS HUGE, BLACK, AND YELLOW.

I am a beekeeper & I can tell you that their cycle is off by about 2 weeks this year. I even had a 2nd year hive swarm -- very unusual.

I went to harvest honey after Labor Day weekend & got NOTHING. Not because the bees made no honey -- the honey boxes were filling up in late July quite nicely -- but because the bees had already moved all the honey down in the lower 2 boxes of the hive where they overwinter.

They are battening down the hatches early for some reason.
