The Syrian government targeted a gas station Thursday in an airstrike in Ain Issa village in Raqa province ,killing scores of civilians, Syrian opposition activist networks said in a statement.

"Lawyers and activists in the area say the blast was caused by aerial bombardment," the Britain-based watchdog added.

"The petrol station is the only one that is still open to customers in the area, and it was packed," a media activist in the province told AFP via Skype. "It was hit by a fighter jet."

The activist, who identified himself as Abu Muawiya, accused the army of aiming to kill the highest number of civilians possible.

"The only reason why it would strike the petrol station with a jet is to kill the highest number of people possible," said Abu Muawiya.

The news came as rebel fighters gunned down a helicopter in a battleground town near Damascus on Thursday, according to the same group, and Syria's opposition declared parts of the capital a "disaster area."

A series of explosions rocked Douma, just northeast of Damascus, shortly before the rebels downed the helicopter, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. State television said the aircraft had "crashed".

it was the only gas station in this area with gas so a lot of people where there to get some gas!

If you'd 'stepped up to the plate' when you should have stepped up to the plate, millions of lives would have been saved.

Getting worse now. Only a matter of time until Israel has to eliminate Assad's chemical weapons capability or else he will use them on his own people and everyone else. He is at the point of desperation now, bombing gas stations. No regard for civilian life whatsoever.
