What will they do if you don't leave that much? Or even none?

Nothing you'll already be out the door, unless they put it on your credit card and that IMO would be stealing.

I wont be going to New York when I visit the US next year I like salt on my food,I like greasy chips and burgers,I like to have a cigarette with a scotch or after a meal and I like softdrinks.Tipping is something that I've never experienced there could be some Reservoir dog restaurant scenes coming up.

maybe these beggers (waiters) should get a better (real) job if they want an increase in pay.

I respectfully disagree. I could likewise say, "Maybe these patrons (pseudo-king for a day) could cook their own meal, wait on themselves hand and foot and bring your food and drink to you as quickly as possible."

Not to mention, you pay for food at a grocery store, you pay for service of food at a restaurant. If you don't want to tip, just don't go out to eat. That easy.
 Quoting: Herman The Kid

IF there were not patrons as you suggest, there would be not restaurants, and no waitress jobs.
If everybody would buy and cook their own food, and a visit to a restaurant be only for the very rich and famous, how many restaurants you think would remain? What about the livelihood of all those working in restaurants?
Shitty as it may be, is still a job. Don´t get greedy and shoot your own foot.

You sound just like the type of waiter I give shitty tips to.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 10401141

That's funny because I made about $60K/year doing it 4 days per week after college and even some during law school.

You sound just like the type of customer that wouldn't tip well to save your life. We could identify you from the get go and often gave "our best" service to prove the theory. It held true-every time.
 Quoting: Herman The Kid

'identify'? BEFORE the food is even served? yeah right, and nice attitude you got there towards your potential tippers

its simple, people dont tip if the service is shit. people dont walk in to a restaurant 'appearing' as if they wont tip from the 'get-go'

or perhaps they are treating themselves and cant afford to tip 'well' as you put it. should they not have dessert so they can tip you 'well' even if they feel the food and/or service was crap

its actually not very often i dine out. the food is almost always just not that good (even when you go somewhere upscale), the service is usually ok at best, or they are overly attentive with false smiles and cursory 'enquiries' as to how you food is before youve had time to take a second bite, in an obvious attempt to get a good tip

its like they expect and deserve it merely for doing their job

its nobodys fault but the owner that staff are paid so badly. you dont scan customers for signs that they may not pay what you are 'owed', and treat them accordingly

if you managed to pull in $60 grand a year then i think you must have a nice line in bullshitting the customer, you 2 faced, judgemental oik

christ, what a wanker. do you not see how much of a wanker you appear? lmao
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22820077

You don't get it. I've been the UK twice and spent about a month there-it is different.

Here, waiters get $2.13/hour. After taxes, it is $0.00. It is basically working commission like most sales/service jobs.

"Their job" is to work for tips, here. The customers know it before they enter the restaurant. I always did my best as I believe you should. To that end, I agree that most service is crap.

I am not a two-face anything. You sound like a democrat. If someone excels at their work and makes good money, they must be "bad" right?

When I said "identify" I meant it. It's not even racial. People will look at you funny and avoid eye contact when they know they are going to screw you over-new money or credit-card millionaires are tops at this.

I have a couple of friends that do this. They find something wrong before the end of the meal (even when it was perfect) so they can justify robbing the waiter of a tip they worked for. It is business. Some people are honorable and some people steal.

I almost never eat out anymore. My wife doesn't cook much, but I have been getting into it more and more. I make a killer beef and veggie soup, using a lot of items from my garden, and my secret ingredient.

I bought a big nice smoker and I smoke a brisket or a turkey every weekend or pork butts. Much of that gets vacuum packed and goes into the freezer for the colder months. I cut way back on soft drinks. Now I mix 16 ounce drinks from country time lemonade powder using water from our Berkey filter.

I have dropped 20 pounds in the last 12 months, I have more energy, I feel great, and we have saved a ton of money.

Here in Brazil we are forced to pay a 10% "service fee" in every corner. Maybe because we are not used to tip, but its really annoying when compared to your bill(R$20 of "tip" in a R$200 bill? Thats robbery indeed...)

Was in NY for a few days in 1996....all these waiters started their stupid tip-story because I was a tourist and wanted to educate me about their silly system...the point was that I HAD to pay a10% tip....pissed me really off....tipping is for good service by these people....I they wanna be exploited by their bosses, it's their fucking choise and problem....
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 923740

Most of us Americans don't understand the reason to tip either. If these bitches are so poor, they can quit and find another job. No one forced them to work at these places and no one forced them to work and live in expensive places. Tipping really irks me big time in the US. Why don't we tip fucking Mcdonalds workers for serving us food? They make the same wage as the fucking waitresses. This is why I pretty much avoid most restaurants because it's retarded. These assholes expect us to tip now regardless of how good or bad the service was.

Just a couple notes to make as a waiter (before i left and switched off to current career) first off waiters only make 2.15 an hour, and we are taxed out of that, the government also puts taxes on 10% of everything we sell plus more if we make more than 10% tips when its declared at the end of the night. And heres a fun tidbit, when you dont leave a tip, you actually take money out of the waiters pockets. This is due to a lovely thing called tip out, anywhere from 4-10% of our sales has to be paid to the bussers, food runners, bar tenders, and hostess. so lets say its a bit higher end on the tipout, and you get a 100 dollar meal, we have to pay ten bucks out of that to the food runners, bussers, bartenders, hostesses etc. and then the government will also tax us expecting we made a minimum of ten dollars on that meal, (and of course on credit card tips they know exactly how much we made on the table so will tax us even more if we made more than ten percent, and even with a 0% tip they still believe we made at least 10% tip.
So that 100 dollar meal you had, just cost the waiter a good 13.50 to wait on you, and if you dont leave a tip we have to cover paying that out of own pockets. and thats paid out of a tally of our sales at the end of the night when we turn in reciepts, before we are allowed to leave we immediately have to turn in our tipout money (which comes out of credit card tips first so we cant really escape it) and any additional comes out of the cash we have on us. we also have to pay for the meal most of the time if you leave without paying.
now for bonus fun, we also still have to roll silverware, do sidework, run plates, run food(yes even though we have food runners at some restaurants) bus our tables (even if we have bussers because it wouldnt be fair that they bus all our tables) open up and close the restaurant. including hours without the restaurant being open setting up stuff and closing down with no customers or tips, typically an hour or two of our day unpaid, for 2.15 an hour.

So now people with jobs are beggars huh? Verses the bums that you also probably kick on your way to work.

What if some of them ARE going to school so that they can find better jobs later, while simultaneously working the job that you have looked down upon?

But, I bet that thought never even bounced off the walls of your mind.

It amazes me how incredibly polarized, separated, and divided Americans are. If its not blacks, whites, hispanics, asians, republicans, democrats, union, non-union, then its...waiters, lawyers, cops, judges, janitors, etc. But, lets not stop there, citizen vs politician, cat versus dog, raiders vs colts, martial arts vs boxing. But then we have rich vs poor, Yale vs Harvard, tall vs short, thin vs fat. Yep, and then we go to pretty vs ugly, rap vs country, tupac vs biggie.

Americans can't stay unified for ANYTHING. When hell comes, its going to wipe this place up like a coffee spill. -Divided WE FALL.-

Enjoy the HUGE fall that is coming guys. It was all made possible BY YOU.

I ended up leaving, and have worked in various restaurants in various levels of dining. With al lthat said I typically did amazing most nights, i would joke with my tables, make sure they had everythign they needed, etc. my average tip percentage at the end of the night would sit around 25-28%. but even i had my bad nights where i would make 20 bucks after 5 hours, and there were nights i would walk out with 200 dollars and see servers have to go to atms to be able to pay out their tip out and bank, and leave with negative money due to a couple bad tables. And in the screaming fits customers get in, plus grabbing you while you are walking with 3 plates balanced on an arm then cussing you out because they grabbed you (not even your table) while you are walking by with fully loaded arms and yank you to their table to ask for a refill that they will need in a few minutes the plates drop from your arms and scared their kid. keep in mind back of the house is typically full of overstressed employess yelling and cussing every two seconds for the slightest wrong or because a customer changed their order its somehow your fault. I have seen grown men (customers) throw plates (at a higher end place mind you) at 6 month pregnant waitress simply because he thought she was too fat to be around his table serving food. I have seen multiple break downs of servers jsut giving up in the back and crying. all the while being yelled at that they werent back on the floor quick enough. and yet most of us put the smile back on our faces and rush right back out there to wait on you hand and foot, and for most customers it is a joy for us to do so, because at the end of the night, you guys make it possible for us to live, you are our life blood, and we feel great when a customer remarks how great the service is, and how happy they are with their meal. (in addition to a few stereotypes, we also dont like waiting on overly christian tables that only leave us pamphlets as a tip, and most of us despise oprah because she announced one of the easiest ways to save money was to not tip a server at a restaurant and encouraged her followers to do so on her show). but we enjoy the vast majority of you lot, and its the bottom 1/4 of the public that makes our lives miserable. if it wasn't for the good apples of you out there we wouldn't do the job.

I'm very sorry the government taxes their tips, that's fucked up. That ain't my fault. It would seem to me that waitresses are one of the many groups the government fucks in the ass on a regular basis. please refer up to my large post, the government taxes us on your bill, expecting we made at least ten percent tip on it, plus more if they know we made more thn ten% (like on credit card tips where its tracked) we get taxed a minimum of ten percent even if we get no tip. we also have to pay a tip out which is anywhere from 4-10 percent of our total sales for the night out to the hostesses bar food runners, and bussers. regardless of if we made a tip off your table. so if you leave less than the tipout we are getting the money taken out of what we made that night or in the case of bad nights running to an atm to to cover it. i also covered that in my post up there

I don't tip because society says I have to. Alright, I tip when somebody really deserves a tip. If they put forth an effort, I'll give them something extra. But I mean, this tipping automatically, that's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned they're just doing their job.

So is working at McDonald's, but you don't see anyone tip them, do you? Why not, they're serving you food. But no, society says don't tip these guys over here, but tip these guys over here. It's bullshit!

A simpler solution would be to just pay them the actual minimum wage and treat a gratuity as something not expect as a matter of course, but rather something earned when service warrants the extra.

Good point, i refuse to throw away money on poor service/food, i'll still pay for a sub-par meal, but will not tip a lousy service person who thinks the tip is owed to them regardless of their performance.

I actually agree with that. and you further punish them by not only not giving them money, but you take money out of there pockets by doing so. so bad service no tip means they have to pay for not doing well, not just not making money.

basically imagine you had a bad day at your job and didnt do well, not only do you not get paid for the day but you have to pay the place you work a penalty out of your own pocket for not doing well.
