Re: New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
misleading thread title is misleading.

nowhere in the article did it state that a single restaurant ever demanded 30% tips
 Quoting: John Everytard

Was in South Beach last summer. The restaurants, in addition to the exorbinant prices, add a 30% tip to your bill. If that is not bad enough, there is still a line for additional tip.

I always tip 20%, having worked as a waitress to get through college, but a forced 30% is nuts!

Glad I cook most of the time.
 Quoting: Lady Jane Smith

As an ex waiter I almost always tip 20% or higher.. The bitch of it is.. most restaurants "pool" tips.. so your wait person never gets the tip they have actually earned..

Friend of mine took a vacation in NC. 3 of them spent $110 for dinner and weren't even full when they left. They still left a tip though. But they all said they'll never eat there again.

lmao @ Tip Rate.

Gotta love to be an employer on the US food serving business.

Employers are under paid? That's the costumer fault!

Re: New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
I find it mindboggling that in this day and age, and in such a wealthy country such as the USA, americans still put their hands out waiting for a miserable tip.
I find it soooo demeaning to see waiters, taxi drivers et cetera having to ingratiate themselves hoping to recieve alms.
it is absolutely disgusting.
and who really benefits from tipping a waiter???
the waiter??? NO, the restaurant owner and americans are so stupid not to realize it.

why are restaurant owners allowed by law to underpay their staff by sooo much???only $2.50 an hour???that is criminal
what is the government and teh unions doing about this disgraceful practice.

it the government was to impose areasonable and fair and commensurate minimum wages...this practice of tipping will be stamped out.

why let the restaurateur profit so much?
is food cheaper in American restaurantsthan european restaurants? NO.
so this means that the restaurant owner is allowed to make unfair profit by robbing the clients and their staff.

shame on you americans for patronizing such crook establishments

In my eyes, its really simple, the employer pays the employee, not the customer. And why are employees paying employees? The whole issue is retarded, and I wouldn't tip based on the fact that I already assume the waiter/waitress is a moran for not only accepting such a fucking measly wage, but expecting somebody else other than their employer to put food in their mouths.

Fuck tipping!

Solution: stay home and cook your own organic meals. At least you mostly know what is being consumed. Fuck restaurants, their underpaid staff, and their relied upon gratuities.

All of you fucking americans know how the system of dining out works.. you tip for service. bottom line. servers earn tips in america, they don't get paid hourly (very little).

abroad, completely different.

for all of you fucktards that don't tip, #1 ~ fuck off, #2 stay home and feed yourself.

**i wish it was mandatory that all people dining out should have had some experience in the service industry**

for all of yous that think i'm a slave, i am damn proud of the work that i do!!
I serve beer for a living and have for the last 10 years of my life (i'm 30)
yes, it can be extremely frustrating and unfulfilling at times, especially when i have to deal with dipshits... however i am very good at what i do and am very knowledgeable about the goods i sell. i am very passionate about beer and my customers know it. they come to us because we are the best at what we do, and they take care of us for it. i have made it a point to not pay too much attention to what people give me, because hey i understand, you can't always tip what you want to, and you know what, i cant always give as good of service as you may expect. oh to be human... and you know, it would be wonderful if i didn;t have to worry about earning tips, but i honestly dont think i would make as much as i do. and at the end of the night i usually go home happy.

bottom line is that the system is NOT perfect. but your server is counting on your tip to make a living. i have not had a pay check in over a year, and it is not because the owners are being shady, it's because my hourly wages cover just enough (but probably not even when tax time comes) to pay my taxes.

if you can't afford to leave a tip, don't dine out.
if you are just a fucking asshole and don;t get it, go fuck yourself and eat shit.
if you're unhappy with your service, think before you react on how hard life can be and maybe that person is having a rough day.. you never know how a little sympathy and a lil extra tip can change someone's day.

as a server i believe in karma and usually tip well over 20%, usually 35-40.
i love dining out and will ALWAYS take care of my waiter/ server. waiting tables/ tending bar and dealing with the public in general can be one of the most stressful, trying, frustrating, exhausting jobs ever, but when you have the right clientele, taking care of people who GET IT, it can be incredibly rewarding and fun work.

cheers!

you still don't get the point do you?

why aren't the waiters in America paid a legal wages???
why are their employers aloowed by the governement and the unions to get away with paying human beings, in this day and age and in a civilized country, only $2.50 an hour???
this is the crux of the matter.

why is it illegal in all other civilized western countries to underpay staff to below the minimum wages, but it is not illegal in America???

it should be illegal.

so why doeant your government and your unions do something about it? and FORCE the employer to pay the minimum legal wages.???

this has nothing to do about customers tipping or not...tipping is a demeaning and disgusting practice. and innocent waiters staff should NOT be put in such a position of having to depend on the generosity of their clients so they can take enough money home to feed themselves...

your government should enact laws to protect these people from teh exploitation of unscrupoulous employers.

No fucking way man. Markup on food is at least 100%. Restaurants have great margins, drinks are even higher markup. How much does a glass of soda cost the owner? Probably 10 cents if they have a fountain, and they are charging you at least 1.50. That's 1500% markup on drinks, and alcohol is always at least a 300% markup. There is not restaurant in the world that operates on less then a 30 or 40 % margin.

We call Vegas Tip City, cheaky fuckers were telling us how much tip to give them.

Message from a Brit.

You get 10% but only on outstanding service or it's a big fat ZERO!

We walked out of the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas after a meal and left $1.00 and the waiter phoned the police, this is very true and was in the local press.

It is the employer who should pay decent wages in stead of slave labour, why should we make the owners rich at the waiters expense:

So the next time I'm in Florida, the food and service has to be good or it ZERO Tip.

I am appalled that they don't understand what we are trying to say......hahaha because american money is soo stupid : all the notes are the same colour and the same size, I always keep a pocketful of folded $1 notes just for tipping....it's so funny when they say; thank you sir, thank you sir....only to get $1 when they unfold the note.

incidentally : america is the only first world country that still has $1 notes in circulation....most countries have $2 coins and $5 as the smallest money note

hey aussie,
the reality is that we work for tips, and as demeaning as it you may find it to be, it is our reality in the states. i would love to have the pressure of earning tips gone, but that is not how it is. i understand your pov, and i somewhat agree with your position, however i do not see a near future where the tipping tradition will change in the US. and i make great $ on tips... and i work for a small business in which every dollar earned and spent counts. the owners are not making 150% profit. unfortunately i don't think you have all of the facts and are making unfair assumptions on both the staff and the employers. perhaps what you specualte could be more appropriately applied towards corporate restaurants but honestly i am grateful for the small restaurants that i have worked for. i have earned a BFA and own a home, as well as live a pretty fulfilling and fruitful life. i earn a great living. yes the system may seem inefficient or demeaning, whatever negative words you continue to use, but it is what we have to work with, and it works for me. it's not perfect but i don't see it changing in the future.

Mandatory gratuity? If you can't afford to pay your employees, you don't deserve to have a business.

gratuity [grəˈtjuːɪtɪ]
n pl -ties
1. (Business / Commerce) a gift or reward, usually of money, for services rendered; tip
2. something given without claim or obligation
3. (Military) Military a financial award granted for long or meritorious service

Lets see, mandatory Obama health insurance tax; *mandatory 4 gallon minimum purchase at gas pump.

It is stacking up folks, how much longer will you tolerate the change?

Re: New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
I work as a Server and in CA we get 8/hr minimum plus tips. In other countries I've been too such as Australia and England, they pay the Servers/Bartenders etc. 20/hr.

In France, they put an automatic 15% gratuity on the bill (a service charge like pizza companies do in the U.S. for delivery) and if you felt the service was great than you add on top of the bill if you feel like it.

I agree with most posters outside the country, paying workers $2.15/hr and expect them to make tips is not only ripping off the employee but also the customer to make up the difference in a sense. Honestly, if it was law that restaurants had to add gratuity to every check most people would be fine with it.

It already happens in U.S. establishments where parties of 6 to 8 or more have an automatic 18% gratuity since it's put on the menu. Even Jerry's Deli and other restaurants late night past 2am put an automatic 15% gratuity on every check no matter how many people.

There's a way to fix the problem but people are being ripped off blind by restaurants with those practices.

maybe these beggers (waiters) should get a better (real) job if they want an increase in pay.
 Quoting: 508527

I respectfully disagree. I could likewise say, "Maybe these patrons (pseudo-king for a day) could cook their own meal, wait on themselves hand and foot and bring your food and drink to you as quickly as possible."

Not to mention, you pay for food at a grocery store, you pay for service of food at a restaurant. If you don't want to tip, just don't go out to eat. That easy.

You sound just like the type of waiter I give shitty tips to.

That's funny because I made about $60K/year doing it 4 days per week after college and even some during law school.

You sound just like the type of customer that wouldn't tip well to save your life. We could identify you from the get go and often gave "our best" service to prove the theory. It held true-every time.

Well as always, the entitled are wrong.

I overtip as a standard. But i'm a pretty strict tipper as to the rule. A good waiter gets between 25-35 percent from me.

But i knock off 10% everytime there's a screwup. I however never go below 1 cent.. Just to show the real fuckwits like yourself that i didn't forget.
