New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
[link to www.dailymail.co.uk]

In a bid to boost their wages, New York food servers are now suggesting diners leave tips of up to 30per cent.

With many U.S. restaurants permitted to pay staff as little as $2.15 per hour, workers often rely on service charges to supplement their income.

But following an increase to 20per cent over recent years, the average tip rate is set to rise again.

An article in today's New York Post reveals that 'gratuities can run to 25 or even 30per cent, a number that might have been laughed off just a few years ago.'

Steve Dublanica - a former waiter and author of tipping guides Keep the Change and Waiter Rant - confirmed that the 'tip creep' phenomenon has plagued restaurant-goers for decades.

lmao @ Tip Rate.

Gotta love to be an employer on the US food serving business.

Employers are under paid? That's the costumer fault!

They'll commit a crime the next time you'll be there.

Not seen as a crime tho, [sarcasm] because it's YOUR fault the employees are under paid, not the employer.

for small meals - like breakfast or lunch - or places where prices are low - 30% is justified - but upscale dinners where the bill is large - 30% is a lot

maybe these beggers (waiters) should get a better (real) job if they want an increase in pay.

I respectfully disagree. I could likewise say, "Maybe these patrons (pseudo-king for a day) could cook their own meal, wait on themselves hand and foot and bring your food and drink to you as quickly as possible."

Not to mention, you pay for food at a grocery store, you pay for service of food at a restaurant. If you don't want to tip, just don't go out to eat. That easy.

yeah cuz it's sooooo hard to carry a plate 20 feet.

I have stopped eating in restaurants because the idea of tipping just pisses me off. I worked in restaurants in college and needed the tips, but there is just ZERO reason to tip. A robot could do a better job than most servers.

Also, the people who REALLY do not deserve ANY kind of tip are bartenders. So, you filled a glass with beer! And you think I owe you another $2 on top of that overpriced $7 beer?

Fuk.
You.

A simpler solution would be to just pay them the actual minimum wage and treat a gratuity as something not expect as a matter of course, but rather something earned when service warrants the extra.

Was in South Beach last summer. The restaurants, in addition to the exorbinant prices, add a 30% tip to your bill. If that is not bad enough, there is still a line for additional tip.

I always tip 20%, having worked as a waitress to get through college, but a forced 30% is nuts!

Glad I cook most of the time.

Re: New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
Restaurants should just raise their prices to include a salary for the waitstaff.

Then a tip would really be a tip for outstanding service.

And no guilt on the patrons if they decide not to.

That's funny because I made about $60K/year doing it 4 days per week after college and even some during law school.

You sound just like the type of customer that wouldn't tip well to save your life. We could identify you from the get go and often gave "our best" service to prove the theory. It held true-every time.

Well they will just lose money. Americans have a tip culture. I know many who will sometimes double the tap. 100% tip, that is.

I have no problem in leaving a tip in upwards of 30%, as long as they earn it. Just because you demand something though, doesn't mean you're going to get it.

Re: New York Restaurants Starting To Demand 30% Tip
20% is appropriate if they do a good job and it goes down from there and that's a good tip.

Most just double the tax and that's a little less.

I don't see that changing in the future. It's a GIFT, a thank you, sure they deserve it if they do a good job though.

Everyone's pay is going down in relation to purchasing power of the dollar due the federal reserve.

Many don't eat out at all anymore.
