Anonymous Coward User ID: 20006444 United States 09/20/2012 11:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I worked as a waiter all thru Medical School and it was years after I graduated before I was making as much as I made in a high-end bistro in NYC where I worked four evening shifts per week! I was funny, good with people, flirted outrageously with older women, and had patrons ASKING for my tables/station all the time. A good waiter can make a princely sum and pay taxes on very little of it if he works it right at tax time. When I started taking shifts in an ER to supplement and help pay off my student loans, I was making about $800/gross for a 6 hour shift (this was 1980 it's a lot more now) and the taxes and withholdings took over half of it because I was single and had no deductions to speak of. I finally learned my student loan repayments could be deducted with certain limits and that helped cut down on the taxes. As a waiter I had my pockets stuffed with cash. As a doctor I was carrying plastic that I struggled to make the payments on each month! Looking back now, I had a good time working as a waiter. As for the tipping. . . we were thrilled to get 20% and a lot of my "regulars" would leave me a ten on a $20 dollar check. So that helped. A waiter who's good, fast, and personable can make serious money in the right kind of eatery. Some guys at the super-high end places pull down $140k per year or more. Not bad for working 8/hrs per night x 4 nights per week and maybe an extra shift if someone is taking time off and they need coverage. Also, I tipped the bus staff and the cleaning crew (we all did) to avoid having to do "side work" at the end of the evening. It worked out. When I go out to eat, I always leave 20% and more if the service is really above the normal. If a waiter or waitress is friendly, fast, efficient, and helpful, I'll pop for 30% or even more if the check is small. What I will not do is be bullied into tipping for lousy service. I've been known to tell a Maitre' de that I was leaving 10% because the service stunk! But never penalize the waiter for a bad meal. Send it back! But tip as though it was decent. Even if they take it off your check, leave the removed amount on top of your normal tip. Remember, It was not the waiters fault the chef was having a lousy night. |

With many U.S. restaurants permitted to pay staff as little as $2.15 per hour, workers often rely on service charges to supplement their income. But following an increase to 20per cent over recent years, the average tip rate is set to rise again. An article in today's New York Post reveals that 'gratuities can run to 25 or even 30per cent, a number that might have been laughed off just a few years ago.' Steve Dublanica - a former waiter and author of tipping guides Keep the Change and Waiter Rant - confirmed that the 'tip creep' phenomenon has plagued restaurant-goers for decades. fuk the tips , dont eat out simple as that fuk them. demand , ya right ... yell at the fukin worthless rogue goverment for wage increaces. |

I could likewise say, "Maybe these patrons (pseudo-king for a day) could cook their own meal, wait on themselves hand and foot and bring your food and drink to you as quickly as possible." Not to mention, you pay for food at a grocery store, you pay for service of food at a restaurant. If you don't want to tip, just don't go out to eat. That easy. You sound just like the type of waiter I give shitty tips to. That's funny because I made about $60K/year doing it 4 days per week after college and even some during law school. It held true-every time. 'identify'? BEFORE the food is even served? yeah right, and nice attitude you got there towards your potential tippers its simple, people dont tip if the service is shit. people dont walk in to a restaurant 'appearing' as if they wont tip from the 'get-go' or perhaps they are treating themselves and cant afford to tip 'well' as you put it. should they not have dessert so they can tip you 'well' even if they feel the food and/or service was crap its actually not very often i dine out. the food is almost always just not that good (even when you go somewhere upscale), the service is usually ok at best, or they are overly attentive with false smiles and cursory 'enquiries' as to how you food is before youve had time to take a second bite, in an obvious attempt to get a good tip its like they expect and deserve it merely for doing their job its nobodys fault but the owner that staff are paid so badly. you dont scan customers for signs that they may not pay what you are 'owed', and treat them accordingly if you managed to pull in $60 grand a year then i think you must have a nice line in bullshitting the customer, you 2 faced, judgemental oik christ, what a wanker. do you not see how much of a wanker you appear? |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23855430 I have stopped eating in restaurants because the idea of tipping just pisses me off. Unless the service is horrible or exception will I ever deviate. If you are paying 20%+ for food that increases every year, what the hell is the point of eating out. It's not like you're eating organic food in heaven. You're eating GMO food that is fried and buttered and served by college kids that probably spit and sweat in it. |
