Are mentally challenged / mentally ill, people allowed to vote?
Someone asked me the other night and I didn't know.

I thought it might be a good topic for discussion on GLP.

I don't care who you think they will or will not vote for, I just wonder if they are alowed to vote?

Are there any IQ restrictions or restrictions against mentally challenged or even insane people? People with all sorts of mental disorderes? Which ones are allowed to vote and which ones are not? Or can anyone vote regarless of IQ and mental stability?

Also, what percentage of the voting population are these people?

This is not a thread to hate on mentally challenged people or people with mental illness, just a thread to discuss their voting rights. Please keep your hateful comments to a minimum.

Thanks

Yes, I understand that wasn't the question. But, if your vote is worthless, why expend any energy at all debating about who is allowed to vote?

Dead people have a vote in this system!

Re: Are mentally challenged / mentally ill, people allowed to vote?
read up on iq charts
and realize that a large number of americans are mentally challenged
average iq being 100-110 means a whole lot of people are below average
and, honestly, 100-110 is bright enough to function in society but not bright enough for a lot of independent thought
they're the "sheep"
and the iq level is why those of us who are aware, who do think, will ALWAYS be in the minority
it's not just a matter of "waking up"
you can't wake up from being unintelligent

and, yes, they vote

Im sure that happens on both side. I'm guessing that many of these people vote for whomever their caregivers suggest.

However, since you did not have a link for you comment.. I found one.

Re: Are mentally challenged / mentally ill, people allowed to vote?
i think voting machines should first of all have a paper trail and have votes handcounted after to confirm results

AND

i think there should be a few random multiple choice questions on the bill of rights to answer on the screen and if you get half of them wrong then your vote gets tossed

you have no business voting if you don't even know what rights americans have

Re: Are mentally challenged / mentally ill, people allowed to vote?
Hmm...

I am still researching. but I just found this article from 2000 saying there are restrictions. I need to find something more current though,

"Of the 50 states in our nation, 44 contain constitutional laws and statutes that bar individuals with emotional or cognitive impairment from voting," said Kay Schriner, research fellow at the Fulbright Institute of International Relations. "The only other group of Americans who face such disenfranchisement are convicted felons."

I can't see why not.

If you stopped mentalists voting then disabled folks would be next.

As for the legal question I have no idea but I'm sure the answer is out there....somewhere.

Article from 2007

"“I just think if you are declared insane you should not be allowed to vote, period,” said Joseph DeLorenzo, chairman of the Cranston Board of Canvassers. “Some people are taking these two clowns and calling them disabled persons. Is insanity a disability? I have an answer to that: no. You’re insane; you’re nuts.”"

I guess the laws a different in each state?

Here is an article about the Mentally Challenged voting laws for Louisiana.

'Voting is considered a fundamental civil right, yet one that is often curtailed for the mentally challenged segment of the population. Though national advocacy groups have become involved in the issue, voting law is decided on a state-by-state basis."
