Senate Republicans block Murray’s $1 billion veterans jobs bill

Posted by Kyung M. Song

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Wednesday blocked Sen. Patty Murray’s $1 billion legislation to create a jobs corps for veterans, invoking a budget rule to kill what they contend is an unproven and unaffordable program.

The 58-40 vote to waive a procedural budget motion fell two votes short. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had already postponed the vote from last Friday, when Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, said the bill violates the Budget Control Act.

Five Republicans sided with all 53 members of the Democratic caucus to override the GOP objection, but that was insufficient. Sixty votes were needed.

Sen. Patty Murray

The Veterans Jobs Corp Act would have trained and employed veterans for jobs in forests, wildlife refuges, parks, cemeteries and other public lands. Murray proposed paying for the $1 billion tab over five years in part by collecting delinquent taxes from Medicare providers and suppliers and from individuals with more than $50,000 in unpaid taxes.

Speaking on the Senate floor before the vote, Murray said the GOP’s motion in effect told veterans the nation has spent enough money on them. The Washington Democrat, who chairs the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, said the bill incorporated many ideas from Republicans to improve its chance for passage.

In a statement, Murray denounced the Republican blockade:

“It’s both shocking and shameful that Republicans today chose to kill a bill to put America’s veterans back to work. At a time when one in four young veterans are unemployed, Republicans should have been able, for just this once, to put aside the politics of obstruction and to help these men and women provide for their families.

“But this vote is stark reminder that Senator McConnell and Senate Republicans are willing to do absolutely anything to fulfill the pledge he made nearly two years ago to defeat President Obama. It doesn’t matter who gets in their way or which Americans they have to sacrifice in that pursuit, even if it’s our nation’s veterans.

Congress is scheduled to adjourn this week until after the election. Murray’s spokesman said the bill is unlikely to be resurrected this yearhiding

My response is simple "GOOD"

why do dems think that more government spending is going to fix everything. How much proof do you need after a 6 trillion dollar addition to the debut since Obama stared. SO the 1 billion more on the 6 trillion is going to make a difference.

You dems are in full retard mode lately. Its quite obvious that spending is the problem, yet you prescribe more of it.

I guess you just want to make this election easier for the GOP then. You forget that while you dems view government as the never ending bank that can spend and create whatever money you want, us in the real world, dont get to take money from bank accounts or borrow money from china.

We actually get a paycheck and when that money is gone, we have to make do...

Of course in your world, you just want to take more of that away from us.

Retards, the lot of you lib demtards

Re: Republicans and Fox News are engaging in treason
Here is the dem-lib thinking on governments actions:

Muslims attack us- Lets give them a billion and a half
Economy bad- lets spend 6 trilion to fix it.
Healthcare bad- lets pass new taxes so we can give more the insurance companies

Education ranks low- hey lets spend more... that will work.

The constant assumption that spending more money will fix the problem has got to leave this country or we will all fall in the sink hole that is developing.

More money handed out (regardless if it makes you feel good) will not fix our problems, it only makes it bigger.

At what fucking point will you get this through your think skulls?

More government spending is the problem... not the solution.

Can you imagine if, on September 12, 2001, a group of Democrats got together to plot blocking all of George W. Bush‘s policies, no matter what they were?

Ahhh....That pretty much describes what they did doesn't it? And what they are still doing, because they blame Bush for every Obama failure that comes along.

In his book Do Not Ask What Good We Do, author Robert Draper details a meeting which took place the night of President Obama’s inauguration, in which Republican Congressional leaders made a pact to “show united and unyielding opposition to the president’s economic policies” in order to regain power, and eventually take the White House in 2012. The facts surrounding this meeting are not in doubt; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich says he was “glad and honored to be part of it.”

There are those who would defend this meeting, as Gingrich did, by saying that any political party would work to regain power, but this wasn’t a case where they got together and said “Let’s make sure we get as many of our policies enacted as we can,” or “Let’s make sure we block these things that we really disagree with, that we think would be bad for the country,” they conspired to block everything. If you need a smoking gun, check their record, since that meeting, of voting against things that were their own ideas just because President Obama decided to support them.

The bill was required by law to go to Congress. It is a budget bill, because the money needed to fund it would be forced to come from the budget. This is because the funding that Senator Murray was claiming it could be funded by is already earmarked for another Democrat sponsered bill.

There are already four bills that were passed, just for funding veterans in post service employment. Why spend another billion dollars we don't have to do a job that we already have?

Another reason why the Democrats didn't want it going to the House for consideration was because by doing so, it would eliminate the Democrats from spending from it for their favorite pork.

That is exactly what the Dems in the Senate & Congress did from 2006 until Obama was elected in 2008.

Turnabout is fair play although Obama doesn't care about Congress, he just initiates executive orders to get what he wants.

I doesn't seem like this is at all in the interest of the people they are supposed to serve. That's the problem with politics these days its about the parties, the special interests, and self interest, not the people. Perhaps we should vote them all out.

Potential Treason is certainly nothing new for FOX. As for the GOP - most of their current leaders have forgotten (if they ever knew) the constitution and they've never been much for standing on constitutional issues when they got in the way of some hair-brained scheme of the that the GOP came up with to further their world-ruling ambitions. The GOP wants to have two fundamental classes in America: 1.: GOP members and their families should be far wealthier than the "servant" class which would be allowed to subsist.

OH PLEASE! If you don't mind if the democrats and the MSM commit treason, why would you care who commits treason? Just continue to look the other way. You will be told what to think and what to do, just wait for your chosen political party to give you your opinion.

Re: Republicans and Fox News are engaging in treason
No, treason is committing a deliberate act that can possibly put the national security of a country in jeopardy. Republicans' and Fox News'crimes are different. Fox News are the cheerleaders, band, concession stand, and rabblerousers. Republicans are spectators who's power is collective stupidity. Hating the quarterback cuz he won't throw to their golden boy guns-a-totin, twang-talkin, god-fearin, cornbread-eatin, ford truck drivin white boy. But not knowin somehow his daddy's sherriff who takes bribes from the river pollutin hogfarm that's stinkin up their county. So the rich hogfarmer's got everyone believin even tho the quarterback can throw a football thru a noose at 100 paces, he don't act right, tain't from aroun chere. But is it treason, no. Just homegrown American dumb.

What's the big deal exactly?

He was quoted as saying he would block "things they really diagree with" and things that "aren't good for the economy".

Sounds to me like a pretty standard approach, of course they will block a lot of things, it's a F***ING TWO PARTY system for that very reason!!! If everyone agreed with everyone else then we wouldn't need but one party.

Being that it's all a charade anyway it doesn't really matter.

Re: Republicans and Fox News are engaging in treason
Look what the traitorous bastards did YESTERDAY. They shafted veterans again.

So yesterday, in one final vile act before adjournment for the elections, Senate Republicans used a point of order to block passage of the Veterans Jobs Corps proposal that would have provided a modest $1 billion to hire veterans to tend federal lands or gain priority in hiring at police and fire departments. The bill was crafted with bipartisan support. 58 Senators supported the bill, but Republicans put together the 40 votes needed to block its passage.

Why shaft the very veterans whose service politicians sanctimoniously celebrate at every occasion?

Is it because unemployed veterans are part of Mitt Romney's scorned 47 percent?

Anyone with half a mind knows that you don't need the police departments anymore militarized, yes veterans should be hired more, perhaps a incentives bill would help.
But for the love of god the police do not need anymore killers. I have family and friends in and out of the military and they'll be the first to tell you that once you come back from war the least little thing will cause you to freak and over react, in the case of being a police office, killing people.
People have lost faith in the police, even the completely law abiding brain washed granny knows that they've pushed the envelope and step across a fine line of trust with the public.
We've already seen ows attacked by the police department, even just trying to close their bank accounts the corporations call in the police, their private security force, now imagine if they were all military, imagine if it was just the army, hell forget the police those assholes in Washington and their sponsor/slave masters would love to have the police replaced with the military.
It's a form of soft martial law, instead of calling in the military just put the military in key places of use.

Washington Democrats and Republicans are questioning U.S. taxpayer aid to the Middle East amid anti-American riots in the region and the fatal attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
And that aid adds up to billions of dollars every year. In Tunisia, the State Department has allocated more than $300 million dollars since early 2011. In Sudan, the U.S. spent more than a half million dollars in 2012. And the tab for Egypt and Libya alone since last year exceeds $3 billion dollars.
