Tony Royster is really good, but I haven't really heard him play with a good band. Neil Peart...yeah he's consistently ranked number 1 in the magazines...but I cannot dig his style. He's got chops but they don't hold the same power as Danny Carey, but that's all opinion of course. It might be his band's tendency to drift into SUPER-LAME territory, even if they are amazing musicians. They are almost as lame as Dream Theater, who also has a badass drummer. |

| DrumrDude User ID: 21083803 09/21/2012 01:02 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Guys, I think I know what I am talking about here, I AM the resident GLP drummer dude. I have played pro for years, all styles and genres. There is no "best" period. All drummers (and all musicians for that matter) hear music interpreted differently. That is the beauty of it. Now, don't get me wrong. I worked for Drum magazine in the mid 90's and I remember all the mail we got in care of Neil due to the double tragedies he had endured. I love him for all his creativity. But Neil is not the best. Even he would wholeheartedly agree there. A very humble guy. For my money, the pro's here on GLP will agree that cats like Steve Gadd, Vinnie Coluaita, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith, and the more fusion-based guys are "the best" or "most proficient" at their instruments. My actual favorite of all time? JEFFREY PORCARO. The man with the golden groove. Jeff had chops for days, but played for the song mostly - simple but SOLID. His playing made the music FEEL good. That is what is missing today so much in music. That feel. Too much autotune, too much digital editing shit. Anyways, that is my two cents. It is tough to rank guys or judge creative talent in my opinion - so let's just appreciate all drummers and what they bring to the table. |

They tend to play melodies rather than beats. Show me a good video or something from one of those guys. I think Bill Bruford is also one of the best. Check him out in this King Crimson classic. The jam session starts at about 2 minutes. I wish there was better quality of it to stream. |

But, there is better my friend. watching the "run up" to the elections and the "hopes and dreams" that are built as a result is like watching a dead mouse that is still able to make his exercise wheel go around because his nerves are still twitching that familiar motion... |

He was good...FOR HIS TIME. watching the "run up" to the elections and the "hopes and dreams" that are built as a result is like watching a dead mouse that is still able to make his exercise wheel go around because his nerves are still twitching that familiar motion... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19755366 but yes, neil peart is the greatest of all time. Maybe not currently, but he is a living legend. I had the pleasure of living in HB and jamming with Jimmy. I first met him when he was 14, he was absolutely INCREDIBLE and everything he did, he made look effortless... he would actually play with one hand alot of times and we were jamming pennywise style punk back then... amazing, I miss him much. I remember one time on our way to play in utah he got out and pissed in one of those ice machines at a gas station in the middle of nowhere... he was a fucking character man! |

We got drummers like Tony Williams, Danny Gotlieb, and Brian Blade who does more on a small set than these guys with big sets. Rock on brothers of the drum. |
