The best thing people can do to ward off illness is to build their immune systems with lots of organic fruits and greens. Fruits especially. Lots of smoothies and some extra vitamin C.

still gathering information, but there seems to have been recent efforts to relocate certain wild-life, including the prairie dogs. this could certainly have larger implications

I'm still searching to who ~financed~ these efforts and why

At least ten bird and mammal species depend directly on prairie dog colonies for their survival: ferruginous hawk, golden eagle, mountain plover, burrowing owl, horned lark, black-footed ferret, American badger, swift fox, deer mouse, and grasshopper mouse (Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks 2011, Great Plains Restoration Council 2011). At least nine of these species occurred historically in Boulder County, and at least eight continue to occur within the county (Boulder County Comprehensive Plan, Environmental Resources Element 2011; Hallock and Jones 2011).

Some of these prairie dog-dependent species, including ferruginous hawk, golden eagle, black-footed ferret, and American badger, prey on prairie dogs. Others, including black-footed ferret, burrowing owl, and mountain plover, nest or den in and around prairie dog colonies. Below, we profile six of these species for which at least some local population data are available. Federal, State, U. S. Forest Service, and Boulder County status of each profiled species (Hallock and Jones 2010) is given in parentheses.

It is frequent every year out west.I don't track it but this is a pretty good outbreak..stay away from wildlife out that way and should be ok. They die fast and it doesn't spread, kinda like ebola.

Treatment consists of hospitalization, antibiotics and medical isolation. If untreated, plague bacteria can multiply in the bloodstream. If the lungs are infected, the person gets the pneumonia form of the plague, creating problems in the respiratory system. Both types can be fatal, and about 1 in 7 cases in the U.S. end in death.
On average, 10 to 20 people are diagnosed with the disease each year in the U.S., with worldwide rates reported at 1,000 to 3,000 cases a year.

Can we call it official now?

The zombie apocalypse for which you have been predictive programmed for coming soon to a neighborhood near you will actually be The Black Plague V.2.

V.1 was spread due to poorly designed infrastructure and sanitization.

V.2 will spread due to aged, decrepit infrastructure and sanitization.

Now we know why nothing is done about the failing grade given U.S. infrastructure?

Terrorism. I was in a class a while back where they talked about all the different types of possible attacks. This was actually a scenario they talked about. Introduction of disease or pathogen through rodents/insects/grass and let it spread through the food chain. Fleas, mesquitoes and mice/rats were the main sources of dispersal considered.

This has terror attack written all over it.

Even though plague is a scary thing, it is treatable with antibiotics as long as it's bacterial.

The headline was shocking and thought-provoking: "7-year-old girl infected with bubonic plague." Wait, bubonic plague? The Black Death? Wasn't that killed off ages ago?
No, as it turns out. There are still isolated cases of the plague reported every year in the U.S. People — such as Sierra Jane Dowling of Pagosa Springs, Colo. — contract the disease when they are bitten by rodent-borne fleas carrying the bacterium.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 5 and 15 cases are reported each year in the U.S., typically in the Southwest. But gone are the days when the plague killed millions of people during the Middle Ages. Given an early diagnosis followed by simple antibiotics, the rare victims, like Sierra Jane, should expect to recover.

How bad could this get? I mean, in the medieval times they had no antibiotics so obviously it killed millions upon millions of people. But these days? I haven't researched into the modern day cures but surely the death toll (in humans) shouldn't be high, should it?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24178836

How bad could it get if some plague viruses have a party with some MRSA viruses?

Maybe FEMA camps are for people that are known to have been in contact with medical facilities in India and could possibly carry asymptomatic MRSA infections?

If the plague has a genetic party with some MRSA patients, TPTB have their depopulation engine.

From what I've been reading, the relocation teams have been 'good samaritan' in nature. Relocating the prairie dogs from areas where they've been a problem (housing developments, horse/cattle pastures, etc) to other areas she and her helpers deem appropriate. Nothing I read looked or implied anything more sinister.

However, using that information it's easy to see why & how this has spread out, and the pattern of infected plague positive prairie dogs seem random.

I'll continue searching and will post anything of significance

Bubonic Plague was actually caused by three different plagues being combined together. (Bubonic, Pneumonic, Septicemic) best known as "The Black Death", and was bacterial in nature.

<snip>

Sept. 6, 2012 -- Each year, a very small number of Americans get plague, the disease that killed millions in the Middle Ages.

Your odds of getting plague are vanishingly small. But it does happen. That's because plague bacteria have found a permanent home among rodents.

Are there different kinds of plague?

Plague is a disease caused by Yersinia pestis bacteria. The disease has three forms:
Bubonic plague comes from the bites of an infected flea or from contact with an infected animal.
Pneumonic plague comes from droplets coughed into the air by a person or animal whose lungs are infected with plague bacteria.
Septicemic plague comes from plague bacteria that get into the bloodstream. Bubonic plague sometimes progresses to septicemic plague.

Apparantly FDA recently approved a vaccine for plague. Hmmm....interesting

The good news is that many people alive today of European descent are descended from people who survived the plague in the middle ages, so chances are good that we have genetic resistance to it.

So....... The Bubonic Plague is running rampant in the US, but it doesn't seem to be causing much of a stir here lol, I know it is not uncommon during the hunting season, but I have never, never seen it this widespread. A mass die off of dog's of which their fleas have tested positive. A woman contracted it from her cat, squirrels etc, this is crazy!
 Quoting: ayr phorce yuan

From squirrels? I doubt this. All known cases could be traced back to cats until now. There were several this year, all from cats. Beware of cats.

Not necessarily. It is transmitted from cats to humans. Just kill off the cats. Problem solved, and many other problems too.
