Syria: Jesuit Father Paolo Dall'Oglio on al-Qaeda payroll, gov't says

BEIRUT, SEPTEMBER 20 - Italian Jesuit Father Paolo Dall'Oglio is on the al-Qaeda payroll, state news agency SAN reported Syria's foreign ministry as saying on Thursday.

Dall'Oglio, who lived in Syria for more than 30 years and founded a center for interfaith dialogue there, was expelled in recent months.

''Father Dall'Oglio did not respect his spiritual mission, but took part in the media disinformation campaign against Syria, a country which hosted him for decades, facilitating his work'', the ministry said in a communique. ''Father Dall'Oglio, who has been a guest in Syria for 30 years and has witnessed all its political, economic and social successes, is now touring certain countries, meeting with institutional leaders and conducting a media campaign with several news organizations, which is being paid for by certain entities. He attacks Syria and justifies the terrorist actions carried out by jihadists, Salafists and Takfiris, including al-Qaeda''. Father Dall'Oglio was expelled by ''the competent ecclesiastical authorities in Syria because he has interfered in internal Syrian affairs in favor of terrorist groups.

The "Jihad Priest" of Syria, Jesuit Father Paolo Dall'oglio

[link to articles.latimes.com]
Resplendent in black cassock and matching skullcap, the bearded Jesuit appears in a YouTube video breaking bread with opposition activists and donating blood at a makeshift rebel clinic, highlighting his solidarity with the Syrian rebellion.

But Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, a brawny bear of a man who enunciates each word with a theatrical sense of certitude, scoffs at the "jihad priest" label. He says he remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the conflict in his adopted homeland -- a "jihad of the spirit, not a jihad of arms," as he declared during a recent stay in the rebel-occupied Syrian town of Qusair.

Still, the Italian-born priest warns: "If nonviolence becomes another name for a lack of responsibility, then I am not with nonviolence anymore. I am with the right to defend people."

Talk like that helped get Dall'Oglio expelled from Syria last month after 30 years in the country, where his devotion to Christian-Muslim "harmony" earned him a global following as a charismatic and pugnacious interfaith visionary.

Expelled priest sided with terrorists, Syrian government claims

Syria’s government has charged that a Jesuit priest who was expelled from the country in June was sympathetic toward al-Qaeda terrorists.

Father Paolo: "They [al-Qaeda] don't have a democratic project, they have another project. From this point of view they are clandestine on the train of democracy, having their own agenda. But, nevertheless, are fighting for something they believe in." [link to www.youtube.com]

Father Paolo Dall’Oglio, an Italian Jesuit priest and leader of the Deir Mar Musa monastery in Syria who was exiled last June for criticizing President Bashar al-Assad, has made his way back “to the liberated Idlib suburbs.”

Mouna Hashem (@mannoush) published a picture [link to twitter.com] several hours ago showing “Father Paolo praying with activists & doctors upon his return to the liberated Idlib #Syria suburbs last week”
