The poor shouldn't be wasting money on cigarettes to begin with. They are already getting help with food and other essentials. If they have the money for beer and cigarettes, it should be spent on food instead of using up tax dollars.

So Obama raises the cigarette tax from 39 cents to 1.01 in 2009 to fund SCHIP for poor children. I find this ironic since the tax effects poor people the most.

The drug companies sell their little depression pills for $5 a pill, that's what a pack of cigarettes cost, and Obamacare won't cover the cost of cigarettes, which probably work a hell of a lot better than Prozac, or Xanax or Zoloft.

There is now a state fee of one dollar per pack on cigs plus the original state tax. Since Tim lived up to his promise he has been rewarded by getting a CEO job of a lobbyist firm. That is how the system works.

Why don't the PTB care if the melt down in Japan continues? They already have a cancer cure. It isn't released to the general public for two reasons. There is too much money to be made in cancer treatments,Agenda 21.

In general smoking tobacco isn't harmful,it is all the chemicals put into tobacco that are cancerous.

Tobacco smoking is a retarded activity. It doesn't even get you high or give you a buzz unlike weed or booze.

There is always a lot of whining on here about "Big Pharma" and "Big Oil" but then not so much about "Big Tobacco." Any hint of restrictions on smoking is met with even more whining about "freedom."

Anyone who is against TPTB should automatically be against smoking, because TPTB sure as hell love keeping people hooked on it. Big Tobacco gets the profits from the cigarettes, Big Government gets the taxes, and Big Pharma gets the money from the cancer and respiratory disease treatment.

Yep. I read a quote somewhere that "rich people do rich people things, and poor people do poor people things."

It is really quite brilliant when you realize that you can have a lot of money and still do "poor people things" just the same as you can have little money and do "rich people things."

It's a mentality thing more than a net worth thing. A "rich" person doing "poor people things" will soon be poor, while a poor person doing "rich people things" (delaying gratification, not wasting the money they have, saving up for things rather than getting in debt, etc.) can rise above their situation in time.

A little off topic but there are laws meant to equalize the pain of spending money that hurt the rich as much as it does the poor. I believe it is Sweden that adjusts a fine dependent on your income. A Nokia exec received a speeding ticket and his fine was equal to over $200,000. This hurt him as much as an average person having to pay $250.00.
