Thank You, Millions Of Anonymous Chinese Workers Making $2 An Hour, We Love Our iPhone 5s!
The iPhone 5 debuted to rave reviews yesterday.
By now, millions of them are in the hands of rich consumers in the 7 lucky countries that got the iPhones first.
And, for the most part, these customers love them.
As well they should!
Because, relative to what we all carried around as recently as 6 years ago, the iPhone 5 is nothing short of a miracle.
So, it's time to send a thank-you note to the folks who made our iPhones.
No, not Apple--Apple and its shareholders have been thanked already, billions of times over, and they'll get thanked even more in the months ahead. The iPhone is the most profitable product in history. And it has made Apple the most valuable company in the world.
It's time to say thank you to the people who actually made the iPhones--as in, put them together.
In other words, the millions of Chinese workers who have worked feverishly to assemble millions of iPhones part-by-part over the past few months.
Assembling iPhones isn't exactly a high-glamour job. In fact, it's an exhausting, backbreaking, and mind-numbingly tedious job. And, unfortunately, making iPhones is not a job that pays enough to enable the folks who make the iPhones to actually buy an iPhone. (Even a crappy old iPhone 4 would be way out of reach for the people who make them, because it's ~$400 without a contract).
So, on behalf of the millions of us who just got our new iPhones, here's a big 'thank you' to the millions of people who made them.
"THANK YOU!"
By the way, if you don't believe that making iPhones is a tough, thankless job, read the description below, from someone who briefly helped make your iPhone.
A reporter for a Shanghai newspaper spent a week working in a Foxconn factory helping to build iPhone 5s.
He described the working and living conditions as a "nightmare," and he couldn't quit soon enough.
The reporter's story was translated by MicGadget, and you can read the whole thing here. We've also written a summary here.
The report doesn't reveal anything horrific or shocking, but unlike many Foxconn stories, it really makes you understand how godawfully boring, difficult, tedious, and physically strenuous the work is, especially when you remember that it pays only $2 an hour.

How many slaves work for you? There are 27 million slaves in the world today. Many of them contribute to the supply chains that end up in the products we use ...

You could say the same thing about just about any product we buy. The sad fact is that the "lower prices whatever the cost" philosophy has indeed cost us dearly.

im sure that $2 p/h goes further than you think for the chinese people, i mean look at chinas economy on the world stage how the hell else did they get there and that goes to every western country back a hundred years that once had child and slave labour, this is how it happened. now western countries are holding developing countries back by 'exposing' their child labour.

china is the manufacturing capital now mostly because of the enslaved and cos they dont give a toss for their working envirnoment.

No ? Those 2$/h are just enough to feed em and have a bit spare for the kids to attend school.

They life in Military style barraks and work 12h per day.

And actually it´s not their fault, it´s cause of the companys putting out the pressure.

Work or lose the contract, and there is not one single company that´s better then another.

If you make profit you take from others that´s a fact.

And it´s not limited to Hightech Toy´s.

It start´s with the Jeans you wear, the Tshirt, to your shoes, every piece of plastic you probably use, Waterball´s, Tupperware, etc, etc. the list could go on and on.

Allmost every mass product nowdays is produced in China/India.

All the raw Metals used to produce Car´s, Truck´s, etc comes from Brasil or China.

There is basically nothing you own that´s not based on low income slave style work, that´s the truth.

Go around your House and check the labels of the good´s you own, then come back and complain again.

I can't believe people buy Iphones with such passion - it seems like they love them more than their children, their religion, and perhaps their own lives...

It's just a sorry excuse for a phone people.

Soon you'll have to do without, so better get used to being human vs. the I-humans you've become.

Yea i can´t belive this I-religion either.

There´s been show´s on German TV where people sat infront of the stores all night waiting for the sale.

They hype it so much, and then it´s such a cheap failure.

Funny with all this Bug´s, in the navigation etc.

If your late to your meeting and you used a Iphone for route planing, you probalbly should sue the crap out of apples ass.

They do with copyright why not the user do it about a failed product.

But all those Inewbs dont even relise they buy Crap, their heads are to deep into the mist.

Check your computer hardward as well, and your TVs, and all your other consumer Electronics, and see just how much has been brought in the USA by your own purchases that came from The People Republic of China, aka Communist China... in contrast with Tiwain.

And then bash yourself as well as the iPhone buyers.

We need to BOYCOTT all these companies that use people for slave labour. Its bad enough we are already wage slaves in the US to the federal reserve with them taking money out of us. The problem is most of what we use comes from china. Our computer parts, laptops etc and everything its hard to overcome.

I think this is why there is still a war on drugs well part of the reason. The more people they get into these prisons the more they can work them at jobs and such for next to nothing just like the chinese.

See, it's not only the U.S. govt. that conspires against the working people with big corps. The Chinese govt. does it, too.

Why not crawl up their asses as well as the corporation's? Because without them none of this would be possible.

I hate cell phones, don't own one and will never own one.

Finding U.S.A. made products is very difficult and to try and find everything you need made here, is nigh impossible.

But I do my best. I actually found some dryer sheets made in U.S. today. I was thrilled. (sad, isn't it?)

Almost every electrical item that you use in day to day life is made in China by under payed workers.

But I guess that doesn't count as long as it's not an evil Apple product lol

This is hypocrisy at its best...

Re: Thank You, Millions Of Anonymous Chinese Workers Making $2 An Hour, We Love Our iPhone 5s!
It seems to me like there is mass, mass denial going on. We are all responsible to some extent.

We don't know how to cope with our heavily fragmented realities; the internal stories that frame our lives are in conflict. Generally speaking, we are lacking basic cultural guidance for happiness, peace and fulfilment; it actually seems like our social and political organisations just induce dissonance.

Some of us are more affected than others. Eventually, some strange social patterns begin to emerge. The prevalence of collective behaviour patterns that resemble widespread addiction is staggering.

Our institutions and other forms of social organisation are draining the life and humanity from us. Our dogmas promote nihilism, fundamentalism and fetishism. We are unable to cultivate balance within ourselves so we yo-yo between mental states. We are unable to cultivate balance in society so it is involuntarily thrust upon us in the form of opposing radicalisms.

Our experiment has gone awry and no one wants to admit it...Its ok though, its at this point of monumental challenge that we have opportunity for immense individual and collective development.

The precipice appears on the horizon... coffeecup

They don't care to automate the process because new models are released so often, and building machines would cost more than the cheap slave labour.
