Re: How did Christianity get started?
It was started by the Roman empire during the reign of Emperor Constantine. The purpose was to control the empire by making one single religion the law of the land and all other existing religions illegal. It united the people under a single purpose - to conquer other lands in the guise of converting them and saving their souls. This aroused much more enthusiasm and fervor in the armies and made the soldiers fight harder. As the government of Rome then became the religion, the Church of Rome became the ruling body . The Roman Empire didn't really fall. It just changed form, became a church and continued to rule the world as The Roman Catholic Church, until the Reformation when countries began to break free from its control.

The whole idea of a man dying and becoming a god and the savior of all mankind was typically Roman. Julius Caesar was made into a god after his death and many others. Jesus was to replace all the the dead guy gods and become the only god the empire would now recognize and be united under.

How can the bible be the word of god, when it is composed of (among other things) letters written by a person named "Paul" who admits being a sinner?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23435015

Are you saying you are sinless?

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

there was only one person on the planet that was sinless, and they crucified him for that, Jesus Christ.

How can the Bible be the word of God? It is proven by the numerous prophecies.

it is the word of god because it says that in the bible.

Actually, I have several versions of the bible sitting right here and not one damn one of them says it is the word of god. They each purport to be the words of various different people (for instance, Moses), but even some of my bibles say authorship is unclear as to most of the books.

Isn't it interesting how Christian are quick to condemn anyone who questions the existence of Jesus, when not one damn one the disciples stood up for Jesus when he was put to death? Peter denied him three times that night alone. If Peter---who knew Jesus personally and knew he was god and watched all these miracles and received the keys to the kingdom---could deny Christ three times before his death, shouldn't everyone have a little slack to ask who Jesus was and whether he really existed?

This is major disinformation. Besides all the evidence for Christianity prior to 324 A.D., the claims that Constantine made all other religions illegal or used Christianity to further conquests is absurd.

First of all, Constantine did not outlaw other religions, he just legalized Christianity. The Empire still had a pagan majority and most (not all) Christian Roman Emperors in the 4th century were tolerant of paganism. In fact, one of them handed power to a known pagan (Julian the Apostate).

As for the conquest theory, the Roman Empire stopped major conquests in the 2nd century A.D. and was on a defensive posture for the next millenia. Christian-themed Roman Armies would have to wait till the 6th century, but that was in the Eastern (Byzantine) Roman Empire and they were used defensively or to reconquer lost Roman territory.

Re: How did Christianity get started?
I found this on another website:

Religion perpetrators typically claim that their adherents will be granted an everlasting life-after-death. They claim that this life-after-death will be far better than life itself. The catch, however, is that the adherent must accept without questioning what the religion's perpetrators behold as true--and the adherents must comply in a manner according to the teachings of the religion's perpetrators. Religion perpetrators typically claim that a God is responsible for the adherents very being and the creation of everything. And they claim that this God is aware of everything that is going on including the actions of the adherents. Compliance of the religion's commandments usually entails that the adherents give a portion of their earnings to support the perpetrators and their infrastructure. Compliance also involves participating in perpetrating the religion further. Compliance also entails dedication of much time for prayer and learning more about the religion and its teachings.

To appear convincing, the religion's teachings consist of many truisms and common sense rules and practices for successful living in a social environment--one should not steal from others, or cause pain to others, etc.

Religion perpetrators threaten their adherents by telling them that they will be punished by God for non-compliance with their religion's principles. They claim that after death, their god will send them to a place where they will be a slave to a devil, be tortured, burned, and the like.

In summary, the religion perpetrators make claims which they cannot substantiate with reason that is recognized in law courts; they use psychological mind control techniques on adherents during childhood; and they benefit from their efforts by taking a portion of the adherent's wealth and coercing adherents with threats to further build their racket.

Re: How did Christianity get started?
Someone else on a different website made the same point:

Jesus had a disciple named Peter, who, having much Christian faith, was a great coward, and denied his leader in his hour of need. Jesus, though previously aware that Peter would be a traitor, yet gave him the keys of the kingdom of Heaven, and told him that whatsoever he bound on earth should be bound in Heaven. Peter was to have denied jesus three times before the cock should crow (Matt. xxvi. 34). The cock crowed before Peter's second denial (Mark xiv. 68). Commentators urge that the words used do not refer to the crowing of any particular cock, but to a special hour of the morning called "cock-crow" But if the Gospel be true the explanation is false. Peter's denial becomes the more extraordinary when we remember that he had seen Moses, Jesus, and Ellas talking together, and had heard a voice from a cloud say, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." As Peter could thus deny Jesus after having heard God vouch his divinity, and Peter not only escapes punishment but gets the office of gate-keeper to Heaven, how much more should those escape punishment and obtain reward who only deny because they cannot help it, and who have been left without any corroborative evidence of sight or hearing!

That is a popular belief, but its not true. The vast majority of European nations converted to Christianity voluntarily.

The idea that the Roman Empire, once Christianized, went on a series of religiously motivated conquests is absurd to anyone who has studied Late Antiquity. Europe and Christianity were barely holding on in the face of repeated Asiatic, Arab and Viking invaders for centuries. Sounds familiar, huh?

Various pagan German tribes overran the Western Roman Empire and ruled over a largely Christianized population for a time. They basically assimilated the religion of their subject. For example, the Franks in France and the Lombards in Italy. Another good example would be the Anglo-Saxons. They came into Britain as pagans and were peacefully converted to Christianity.

If this is true, explain the 110 A.D. letter of Pliny the Younger, the governer of Asia and a pagan, to the Roman Emperor describing Christians and Christian practices, specifically related to how Christians viewed Jesus as God and how to supress them.

What about Tacitus, another pagan, who mentions Christians in Rome during the 1st century?

What about all the Bible fragments that have been dated to the 2nd century?

Re: How did Christianity get started?
"The Gnostics thought that Jehovah was an alien/demon/lord archon and that he was a fake god – a masquerading archon - Lord Archon - duplicating reality. They did believe in God, they believed in what they called the one true God and that’s how they always defined it. Interestingly, Jesus defined his belief as being of the one true God, always delineating it. I believe many of the stories of Jesus are actually Gnostic myths about a possible rebellion against the Archons who came down very severely on the rebel.

So the Archons were released somehow from a prison – and this is probably what The Book of Enoch is about – where he said he took the demons and locked them in a box but that they would come back at the end of time. Jesus was very interested in relating this idea that something was going to happen at the end of time..so we can work out a picture of what these Archonic forces are. They were somehow successfully quelled and then began their re-emergence and they are as close to immortal as we could understand and that’s why their plan is so precise but they needed time to gain power because, the people of the earth were essentially gnostics who were resistant to, and didn’t believe in the “religion” that was being foisted on them where they must be fearful of an angry, war god called Jehovah. But eventually, the forces of Jehovah conquered the last of them and now they are pretty much in control of the system and are busy creating the infamous 'genocide of cambodia, WWII, stalin, mao, etc. - 20th century) orgy of despair and horror [imposed upon humans] which is 'the end result of the buildup of the population over the last 2,000 years by means of strategic successful manipulation of humanity through the major religions.
The story of this can be put together by following the histories of how these churches were formed and became so large and monsterous. And right now we have a monster on our hands which is growing in power, tht is the Lord Archon himself. more later.."
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22729431

Within [the above] context.. the "Jesus" character acts as the thought police, potentially, for ultimate control. Wars have been fought repeatedly over beliefs and ideas. When the enemy controls what is in the mind of humanity, the enemy then controls humanity.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23435015

No a circular argument uses it own statement to prove itself, as you just did.

The Bible is proved in several ways.
One way is by the People who lived it and experienced God miracles.
The World Wide Flood, The Burning Bush, The Plagues in Egypt, the Red Sea parting, The Pillar of Fire by Night and Smoke by Day, Divine Healing, etc.

Another is those who experience a relationship with God on a DAILY basis.

Another is based upon Prophecies in the Bible, having being prove to be 100% accurate.

Another is the Science of the Bible, when properly translated and understood it is 100% accurate.

Another is the History of the Bible, that which can be proved, has proven to be 100% accurate, Many have tried to say it is not accurate, only find themselves to be proven wrong years later.

No other ancient text has been so accurate. There is no text, even those written by Scientists today, that does not constantly have be re written to be accurate.
That is the Proof.

aramaic was the native tongue and greek was the language of the controlling force, the greeks, which had control for 100 years..more or less

was part of the greek empire, similar to what english is today. everyone speaks their native language, and then speak english as a second language..
