No, I used to do very well with coupons but most are only for mainstream food full of disgusting stuff. If they eat healthy then growing may be the only way to save money. Try buying from the farmers market too. These prices op quotes are similar to what I pay in NC. I noticed the jump this summer.

Don't really see it here yet.

Went to Wal*Mart last night. Loaf of bread still a dollar, cheese still around $3.50 per pound, 1/2 gal of milk $2. Same as it's been for a while.

May I ask what state you live in? I just want to tell you we do not shop for food at Walmart ever. Honestly the foods are GMOs and even the clothes are covered in poisons -have you not heard of the poisionous baby formula and the arsenic laced pet food.
 Quoting: Macraider

I can say this is true. I put my cats DRY food in a brown lunch bag and within minutes the bag started to spot. But it could be something else i am unaware of...

you think it's getting bad now, just wait for next year and the tax burderns and a couple more months of QE infinity

Yeah that is going to be the straw that breaks it. I have not been as frugal as of late but starting now. Hanging out laundry, cutting back on everything ! I would not even have Internet if it was not required for my husband's job. Tip for cooking which is time consuming is to take one day cook and bake separate in portions and freeze.

Wow.... We went to Costco tonight in Northern California, and the choice beef was $19.99 per POUND !! Also, everything we normally buy has gone up by at least -$1.00 - The organic whole chickens were 2 for $20 2 months ago, and NOW they are $30 to $35 for same 2 chickens!!

NOW, food for a family of four is costing $375 every 2 weeks (no food stamps here). Our weekly food bill has doubled this year!! Inflation is before our eyes. I had an anxiety attack shopping. I am very particular in purchasing REAL WHOLESOME FOODs for my family. I no longer buy any corn products because of GMOs. We stay away from high fructose corn syrup. I read the back of everything I buy and I find myself putting most of the food back on the shelf because of the junk in it.

My business that I have had for over 23 years is failing. For the first time in my life, I am very worried and concerned. I am making major changes to my life asap because I do not see any other way to survive. I take pride in taking care of myself and family. I do not want to go onto the governments tit for support. Is anyone else seeing the changes that I am seeing or struggling like I am struggling??

My spouse wants us to sell everything we own and move to IDAHO. Spouse wants us to prepare for a complete financial and government collaspe and he wants to grow and raise our own food. What do you think (your opinion is welcomed)??

Your store is ripping you off. I can get chicken for 69 cents to 75 cents a pound here in San Diego. Fresh Ground 20% hamburger is still under Two Dollars a pound. (I buy more chicken than hamburger and spend less than two dollars a day for food for me and the wife)

All produce in San Diego is cheap, as this is farm area. You can get ears of corn, 5 for a dollar in season. Other vegetables are equally cheap.

Why do you pay such outrageous prices??????

You people are wasting your money most foods the regular products are just as good or even better in quality than the organic. The food companies are brainwashing you so they can mark it up more than normal and your thinking I am doing something good for my family and most of the organic lines are now owned by the large food companies anyway so your just making the big companies richer. I brought a steer to butcher not to long ago to the local butchering plant for the local locker and there were to run downed bad looking cows and I asked them who they belonged to and he said the organic dairy farm and I know that he will get more per pound for that poor quality hamburger than I will for my nice healthy cow. I would rather eat my commercial raised cows anyday. We test all our treated cows before they go back in the tank for milk and we follow all slaughter holds on the animals that are shipped for meat. Also the number of animals that even have been treated in the last year before they go to market is so small anyway. If we ever get caught with a residue we are in big trouble so it does naot make since to send questionable animals to market

Corn in the Northwest just a couple of years ago were 10/1.00. I thought last year at 5/1.00 that the sale was coming at any time it never did. Next year will be a lot worse, breaking us with inflation has been going on for decades, but now wages are not rising unless you work for some sort of city, state, county, federal governments.

We try to stay away from All corn products as I am determined to stay away from GMO. Nor do we by massed produced meats because of hormones, arsenic or the antibiotics these animals are fed.
I do not vaccinate myself or children and all of the water we drink comes from my reverse osmosis filter.
I firmly believe that the mass produced boxed food is dangerous and anything from China is suspect.

isn't it great how we let corporations export our jobs to third would countries blaming it all on unions. Only to have these jobs raise their standard of living and allowing them to compete for the same things we enjoy in the 1st world. Globalism is a great! This store is Costco. It is nationwide and set up to give its customers the best bang for the buck. Their food quality is excellent and I have shopped their for 23 years. It in not ripping me off. It is reality in the face. I also shop at the traditional grocery stores and get less for the near the same amount buying in bulk at Costco. In fact, I had a phone conversation with the HEAD of COSTCO...Why? Because of my concern over RADIATION in the Japanese Green Tea because it says on the box a product of Japan.

He told me the shop for the very BEST products at the very BEST PRICES. He also said they use a Geiger Counter to test all food from Japan area.

I live in the midst of 3 counties: Sonoma, Solano, and Napa. I have to report that the prices I stated earlier is fair game for all counties as I shop all 3.

everybody need to take responsibility for their own food
op like another poster pointed out "organic" is not a
perfect buying solution.

only way to be sure its good is to grow/raise it yourself
only way to be sure you can afford it or can even buy it
is to grow/raise it yourself.

Instead of buying meat by the pound at the store, buy it as a 1/2 or 1/4 from the farmer. Yes, that means getting a few hundred pounds of meat. Pick up a freezer on craiglist.

Learn to cook from scratch. Grow your own garden.

Take up sprouting. Don't buy the expensive sprouting kits. Just get a mason canning jar, a piece of fabric, and a rubber band. Pour 1/4 cup of lentils in the jar and soak it overnight. Then rinse the lentils twice a day. In a few days, you will have a jar full of healthy sprouts. A single pound of lentils costs around $1.50 and will keep you full of sprouts for a month.

ffs ttown, you're missing the point, food inflation is rampant everywhere.

Yesterday went to buy 6 eggs, last xmas they were 99p, then in april went up to £1.39 and now £1.59, thats a 59% rise in 9 months, same supplier as always.

Bad weather and fucked economy are the chief culprits.

OP, I sympathise with you and your business as my small 1 man business is also teetering, I have to collect benifits so I can eat.

if you have a grocery outlet near you, depending on the intelligence of the managers, you'll be able to get gluten-free and organic foods at sometimes 1/3 other store prices. trader joe's can also be a good resource.

also buy in bulk if you can.

we're not feeling the food price gouging *quite so much, yet, in portland oregon, but it's coming i am sure.

just a reminder to also have a couple kerosene lights, oil, and a campstove with extra fuel tanks. just saying.

i also shop the 'discounted' meat section...safeway does this, as do most large chain grocery stores...at the safeway here i often get organic chicken of buffalo or beef at half price. i just freeze it till i need it.

Groceries are up at least 40 percent since the first of the year here in Alaska, and more on some items.

This is only the beginning...wait until the full effects of the drought hit the supply chain. Now is the time to stock up on beef, pork and poultry. Many producers sent their breeding stock to slaughter when they could not find feed at any price.

This is just my opinion but it has nothing to do with inflation, and everything to do with GAS PRICES!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24269398

Also, I would like to express that our current situation does have to deal with the value of the dollar. As the dollar goes down in value, countries are demanding more dollars for the fuel.

Mr. Obama has shut down much of our domestic energy capablities. We have enough natural gas to last 200 years and it is not difficult to convert a car to run on natural gas. This is deliberate to destroy our country.
 Quoting: Macraider

Yes it is, to support the dollar through Petrodollar sales worldwide

1)they must keep increasing the price of oil, 2)because the use of Petrodollars is decreasing, 3)because consumption of oil is plummeting; while they print it (dollar) into toilet paper. The reason there is no domestic production and the gobermant is against it is because this is their means to export freshly printed dollars (inflation distribution to the whole world because the American Dollar is the worlds reserve currency) Also another reason that Green energy has been, what seems to be a Goberm4ent mandate while at the same time they are making sure it fails so that they can continue to export inflation.
You also realize, that is the reason they have exported all the jobs - because if employment is allowed to get a foothold here domestically the Production, Investment and output would overwhelm that exported inflation rate and kill the Dollar sooner rather than later. This is all by design of course.

Maybe you should consider a less quality meat... choice... organic...

We get up early and head to Walmart on Saturdays as it seems like they mark down their about to expire meats on Saturday morning. Get really good deals.

Chickens... we have been getting smaller chickens to save money. The dog thinks it sucks because there are no left overs... but that is his problem.
Have a nice day = GFY. GFY = Go Fuck Yourself. If this offends you then have a nice day.

A single pound of lentils costs around $1.50 and will keep you full of sprouts for a month.

yep done that, just got our third freezer a week or so ago. We have a 10 cf chest freezer, which was given to us, otherwise I would not have it. Only upright. Were getting a half in a few weeks that will fill up our 13ct and the rest of our 16ct uprights. Been prepping for over two years and def, getting beef by 1/4 or 1/2 is the way to go.

Also if you buy flour, rice in bulk. Freez it for at least 2 days before storing it.

Re: Soaring Food Prices !!! OMG!!!
you are buying the best possible foods you can, most of us can't do that. I have a big supply of pasta, rice, beans, and other "vegetarian" protein combos.. We spend $80 per week for 3 people and that's with some luxuries like ice cream, cookies, chips, and soda. If I lived alone I could probably live ok on about $20 per week, buying bulk and sale items. Our family would have to eat out at every meal to reach the $375 limit, lol
