I have worked hard my entire life. I pay my tax and follow the laws of our country.

I have always wondered about moving south. To be perfectly honest I would now be afraid. It seems so strange to be the minority. I also concerned about the near civil war down there. Does that affect your life?
I noticed something I thought strange. The mexican soda has real sugar, not corn syrup. While our soda is loaded with corn syrup. WTH?
 Quoting: Macraider

I've live in the region south of Toluca, for about 8 years now, and traveled to various parts, but always to the south, not to the north.

I have never before lived among people so naturally loving, kind, and friendly. I have never witness any violence of any sort, not even among the youths, although I am sure it must occur. I lived in the US for most of 40 years btw.

The narcotrafficers came into our pueblo one night for several hours several years ago. By all their brand new high technology vehicles, arms, uniforms, and electronic information gathering technology (they put up roadblocks and ran ID checks on everyone through their lap top computers), by this and many other things it is obvious to me and everyone who live here that these narcos are none other than professional US trained and armed military personnel. They killed 16 specially targeted individuals on that visit.

Re: Soaring Food Prices !!! OMG!!!
Wow.... We went to Costco tonight in Northern California, and the choice beef was $19.99 per POUND !! Also, everything we normally buy has gone up by at least -$1.00 - The organic whole chickens were 2 for $20 2 months ago, and NOW they are $30 to $35 for same 2 chickens!!

NOW, food for a family of four is costing $375 every 2 weeks (no food stamps here). Our weekly food bill has doubled this year!! Inflation is before our eyes. I had an anxiety attack shopping. I am very particular in purchasing REAL WHOLESOME FOODs for my family. I no longer buy any corn products because of GMOs. We stay away from high fructose corn syrup. I read the back of everything I buy and I find myself putting most of the food back on the shelf because of the junk in it.

My business that I have had for over 23 years is failing. For the first time in my life, I am very worried and concerned. I am making major changes to my life asap because I do not see any other way to survive. I take pride in taking care of myself and family. I do not want to go onto the governments tit for support. Is anyone else seeing the changes that I am seeing or struggling like I am struggling??

My spouse wants us to sell everything we own and move to IDAHO. Spouse wants us to prepare for a complete financial and government collaspe and he wants to grow and raise our own food. What do you think (your opinion is welcomed)??

alone
 Quoting: Macraider

Your store is ripping you off. I can get chicken for 69 cents to 75 cents a pound here in San Diego. Fresh Ground 20% hamburger is still under Two Dollars a pound. (I buy more chicken than hamburger and spend less than two dollars a day for food for me and the wife)

All produce in San Diego is cheap, as this is farm area. You can get ears of corn, 5 for a dollar in season. Other vegetables are equally cheap.

Why do you pay such outrageous prices??????
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 16674316

How much is your rent or house payment? Do your stores sell Mexican beef?

This is just my opinion but it has nothing to do with inflation, and everything to do with GAS PRICES!!!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24269398

God don't I know it..... I own a DRIVINg SCHOOL for Teenagers!! I charge the same cost now as I did 23 years ago and my expense have QUADROOPLED!! I also had to let 7 employees go. In 2009 I had 15 teachers, and now I am down to 5. Kids are not completing the state requirements anymore due the economy.
 Quoting: Macraider

You can open a driving school in ID. It's been hit hard by the housing fiasco, but if you can work your own business, there's still plenty of money to be made. Say hi to my family and friends when you get there ;)

In Arkansas ground beef runs 2.99 lb for 85/15. The good stuff is close to 4.00. Milk is right at 3.90/gl. I can buy a dozen medium eggs for 1.50. Gas is about 3.70/gl.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24265785

Your state is much cheaper than California. Here is our averages:

Gas: $4.00 per gallon (lowest grade)
Eggs: $6.59 Organic 2 Dozen
or $2.50 1 Dozen Factory
Bread: $5.00 1 Loaf Whole Grain
Grass Beef:
$15.99 for choice Rib Eye

Garbage Beef Round:
$6.49 per pound (Cheapest Beef Roast)
Milk: $6.00 for 2 gallons or $4.59 for 1 gallon
Organic Milk:
$10.99 for 2 gallons Organic
Organic Chickens:
$35.00 for 2 fat chickens

***I shopped tonight. This is current.
 Quoting: Macraider

Your most expensive item on that list ^^^^^ is meat. Cut out eating meat on a daily basis. Use it as a treat for Sunday meal. That's actually what the poor did in my parents time when they could not afford it more often. You can substitute some chick peas, lentils, tofu & sprouted beans during the weak. Much cheaper & actually better for you.

Holocaust by hunger: The truth behind Stalin's Great Famine

The demented Roman Emperor Caligula once mused that if all the people of Rome had one neck he would cut it just to be rid of his troublesome people.

The trouble was there were simply too many Romans to kill them all.

Many centuries later, the brutal Soviet dictator Josef Stalin reflected that he would have liked to deport the entire Ukrainian nation, but 20 million were too many to move even for him.

So he found another solution: starvation.

Now, 75 years after one of the great forgotten crimes of modern times, Stalin's man-made famine of 1932/3, the former Soviet republic of Ukraine is asking the world to classify it as a genocide.

The Ukrainians call it the Holodomor - the Hunger..............

Idaho is like heaven compared to New Jersey and Colorado Springs all the neighbors know each other and every one still has picnics and scouts in the park with the kids. The price of everything except gas is 50% cheaper especially in the grocery store! There are 470 people were we live but Preston is 10 min away and it is like a little country town with grocery stores, gas stations, mcdonalds, dollar stores and more. If you need a big City Logan Utah is 20 min away and if you need a really big city Salt lake is about 2 hours away. I home school and Idaho has the best laws in the state, there are farms and food everywhere. When the SHTF this is the best place to be! God Bless

Don't really see it here yet.

Went to Wal*Mart last night. Loaf of bread still a dollar, cheese still around $3.50 per pound, 1/2 gal of milk $2. Same as it's been for a while.

But it will open your eyes....

Wal Mart is artificially holding down thier prices.

I have suspected them of being part of our government for a very long time....

How do you think it works when they open thier doors during a catastrophy for law enforcement and emergency agencies to come in and 'take' what ever they need to 'help' the people...

When the RFID chips were first introduced, it was our military and WAL MART that were going to use them...

Try shopping outside of costco as well folks...

I as well as myself agree with you. It is so hard to consider moving because this is my home. I have lived here all my life, however, in my heart I know that you are correct. The cities will eventually become unliveable and you will have to fend off the 'zombies' like the CDC website forwarns. Thank you. ;-)

Re: Soaring Food Prices !!! OMG!!!
California is great if you have money. Whether you go to Idaho or not (and it would be lots cheaper - and colder - there), please consider finding the cheapest house in a fairly safe neighborhood that you can afford. Maybe it's the one you're living in if you didn't refi, but low housing costs are key. Then, one of you get a job outside of the home to keep things afloat and SAVE! Believe me growing your own food and meat is great but it's hard work and VERY difficult to start without some working capital. Good luck to you and, yes, things will probably get way worse before they get better. And one more suggestion, if you absolutely limit the amount of prepared food and snacks you buy and start cutting down your beef purchases, you should be able to cut your food budget and still eat healthy stuff. Cooking from scratch is cheaper once you build up your supply of whole wheat flour and other staple ingredients.

Food prices, here in Maine, are extremely high as well.

Mostly because I choose to not put genetically modified organisms in my body, and it costs A LOT more to live. I have chosen to eat half as much as I used to.

2 organic green bell peppers - $5
10 slices of organic cheese - $5 (WTF?!)
1 pound of organic pork - around $8
1 pound of organic, grass-fed steak - around $18
1 pound of wild salmon - $20
1/2 gallon of organic milk - $3.99

Gas is currently hovering around $3.90 a gallon but I assume it will go back up once TPTB realize we are doing nothing about high gas prices and nobody seems to care. They essentially push it to see how much we will pay without rioting. What people don't understand is the prices of goods are tied to gasoline.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4428411

Key word inflating food cost for some posters here is, ORGANIC. You are choosing high prices when you choose organic. True food prices have doubled under the savior Obama, but most average Americans don't fall for the organic hoax.

Re: Soaring Food Prices !!! OMG!!!
Op, make the move to a farm.

Try to get yourself a place where you can be self-sustaining as soon as possible.

Some farms you would consider living on are much better than others for this purpose.

If your family numbers something like two parents and three or four young children, you are going to need help running the farm, but the good news is most farms can easily support a larger number of people than that. This offers you the opportunity to have others living on the land with you who do most of the labor-intensive work on the land for you for a share of the yield and a share of the profits after harvest.

For this reason, it is wise to invest in a farm that has two separate living quarters such as a good solid home with a basement, or one that has a sharecropper's house, a detached garage with living quarters above it, or a sturdy barn with a tack room that has water, electric, and heat. A bathroom in the alternate living space can be added fairly easily as long as water pipes already reach to that location. If a barn does not have water to it, a cistern or well or spring can be employed as the water source.

Another primary thing to keep in mind is that for you to be self-sustaining your living style must be energy-independent. Thus, it is imperative that a few acres of the farm you decide on must be wooded. You could end up depending on that wood supply to keep you warm in the winter. Having wooded acreage also gives you a place where you have the right to hunt no matter what happens to the public's access to forests in the future.

Many homes in rural areas that get very cold in the winter (like Idaho) have a wood-buring stove in the basement which when hooked to a boiler system can be used to warm a whole house in the winter. At least one fireplace or an additional wood burning stove on the main level of the house and in the barn, garage, or sharecropper's home are also essential.

You must also make sure that the farm you choose has several sources of water. It should preferably have 2 or 3 of the following: well, cistern, spring(s), stream, river or creek. If it lacks a well or cistern (or both), one should be put in.

Understand that if you are truly self-sufficient, unless you have a natural gas well on your property (as is posssible to have in Kentucky or West Virginia and a few other places), you will be depending on horse power to plow your fields and harvest your crops. Thus, two good farm work horses (i.e hardy quarter horses) should be factored into your plan. Thus, a barn (or any building that could be converted to use as a barn) needs to be on the farm.

Having a running source of water (stream, creek, or river) on the farm gives you the possibility of developing hydroelectric power to run small appliances and provide electric lighting in all the structures on the farm. A wind mill or wind turbine can also be erected to harness wind power to generate electricity too.

Having a creek or spring-fed pond on the farm is also a big plus. It can not only be used to water stock, it can also be stocked with a variety of fish that can be an additional source of protein for you to live off of as time goes on.

Having at least one hayfield on the farm is advantageous. This allows you to feed your stock over the winter when grazing isn't possible from hay grown on your own land. If you are not familiar with growing hay, except during the winter hay in the field grows constantly (you don't need to replant it) and farmers just "give the hay a haircut" about 2 to 3 times a year and store it in either smaller square bales or much larger round bales. Hay must be stored out of the elements where it cannot get wet.

Alfalfa is another easy crop to grow to help feed stock, however, it must be aged (by bacterial action in silos into what is called sillage) before being fed and many farm animals cannot be fed much alfalfa at any one time. Raising oats also helps feed both farm animals and people.

Having a variety of fruit trees (and berries) on a farm is also very important to the health of your family. However, many fruit trees do not bear fruit until they reach maturity after 3 years or so. If you do decide to move Idaho to farm, it is an added plus that there are many farms there that have already have mature orchards on them.

The only downsides to Idaho that I see are that property values are fairly expensive, it has harsh winters, and it is fairly close to Yellowstone.

You may wish to consider getting a farm in Kentucky where the land values are much more affordable (the cost is about half of that in Idaho), you get a much more moderate winter, more sunny days and a longer growing season, a rich limestone base to the soil, and you can have a natural gas well on your own property that is for your exclusive use.

Good luck, OP, and God bless you and your family.

Re: Soaring Food Prices !!! OMG!!!
I am a farmer in northwest wisconsin. What I see the people that are complaining the most are the ones that are buying organic products. You people are wasting your money most foods the regular products are just as good or even better in quality than the organic. The food companies are brainwashing you so they can mark it up more than normal and your thinking I am doing something good for my family and most of the organic lines are now owned by the large food companies anyway so your just making the big companies richer. I brought a steer to butcher not to long ago to the local butchering plant for the local locker and there were to run downed bad looking cows and I asked them who they belonged to and he said the organic dairy farm and I know that he will get more per pound for that poor quality hamburger than I will for my nice healthy cow. I would rather eat my commercial raised cows anyday. We test all our treated cows before they go back in the tank for milk and we follow all slaughter holds on the animals that are shipped for meat. Also the number of animals that even have been treated in the last year before they go to market is so small anyway. If we ever get caught with a residue we are in big trouble so it does naot make since to send questionable animals to market

you are an idiot i am back from the barn. that is why I will have a different id number this time and I am not sure why the flag did not show in the barn. we have over 600 milk cows and everything is ran by computers today. I graduated from the university of wisconsin river falls with a degree in ag business. Farms are big businesses today

yep and thats why i buy meat from small, local farms because farming is big business and the cattle and pigs and chickens in big business farming are fed gmo corn and soy. its as bad for those animals as it is for humans and if you think you're going to be healthy eating sick animals, good luck.
