this is what the neutron monitor are looking at....
Cosmic Rays
Particles that bombard the Earth from anywhere beyond its atmosphere are known as cosmic rays. Cosmic rays don't take pretty pictures, but studying the quantity and type of these particles helps us to understand the acceleration processes involved and to measure the composition of the Sun, as well as sources at the far distant reaches of the galaxy.

TripHopJuke, since I have a limited understanding of physics(got a C in it) would you be able to give me a simple quick explanation of why this is important and what it means, please.

The women cosmonauts were saying that the first wave was to begin yesterday so is this related? Thanks

I am not sure what it all means but here is a link to a gamma ray site, it appears there are blue hits everywhere. The green one JUST showed up the past few minutes. I found it on a different thread. If you click on today's date it gives a little info.

Can someone explain what it means? Does it mean we're going to have an enormous solar flare then??

these monitors will often show a spike in realtime....then after the system is calibrated....those huge spikes are gone.

now is this just weird things being wiped or flaky equipment...
i go to look at other monitor around the world and see if any others have shown a spike....well as i have been looking at the one which usually show spikes....
i see none today.

Gamma-rays and cosmic rays are different.

[link to science.hq.nasa.gov]
Gamma-rays have the smallest wavelengths and the most energy of any other wave in the electromagnetic spectrum. These waves are generated by radioactive atoms and in nuclear explosions. Gamma-rays can kill living cells, a fact which medicine uses to its advantage, using gamma-rays to kill cancerous cells.

Gamma-rays travel to us across vast distances of the universe, only to be absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere. Different wavelengths of light penetrate the Earth's atmosphere to different depths. Instruments aboard high-altitude balloons and satellites like the Compton Observatory provide our only view of the gamma-ray sky.

Re: Moscow Neutron Monitor OFF the chart!!!!
Oh I see, thank you! This was the info it gave on the Nasa site:

Gamma-ray bursts are short-lived bursts of gamma-ray photons, the most energetic form of light. At least some of them are associated with a special type of supernovae, the explosions marking the deaths of especially massive stars.

Lasting anywhere from a few milliseconds to several minutes, gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) shine hundreds of times brighter than a typical supernova and about a million trillion times as bright as the Sun, making them briefly the brightest source of cosmic gamma-ray photons in the observable Universe. GRBs are detected roughly once per day from wholly random directions of the sky.

I am not sure what it all means but here is a link to a gamma ray site, it appears there are blue hits everywhere. The green one JUST showed up the past few minutes. I found it on a different thread. If you click on today's date it gives a little info.

what does it actually mean tho?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24282450

It's more than likely a solar event, or the result of a long-since dead supernova.

A neutron burst (assuming it isn't just a shorting out glitch) of that magnitude could indeed have an effect on earth life, damaging DNA etc.
