 Quoting: DERP

good question.

I find it hard to believe people that make $100,000/ yr would sit here posting on a 1995 style conspiracy forum.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23367695

Why? The reason people are successful is because they are in the know. I come here because I like to stay on top of what is going on globally since it has an impact on what I do for a living (commercial real estate and investing.) I spend a ton of time researching to stay on top of things, which is why I have been successful, and I found GLP when I was doing research in 2008. At first it was entertaining but there are some great nuggets of info here sometimes so that is why I keep coming back.

2x that in tech company computer science degree
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 13158115

I'm thinking about learning a programming language soon...

Any advice on which language would be the best one to start?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24276807

My advice is to make accurate typing the cornerstone of your computer career. Get fast; get accurate; learn proper spelling and business English. Then, gravitate to jobs that require keyboard skills...those are, very often, jobs on computers. Take computer classes IF programming is where you need to be. B/t/w, many good computer jobs do not involve programming specifically.

The next step is to combine knowledge of a type of business with computer or keyboard skills. So, you would, for example, become knowledgeable about an insurance business and its use of computers. Eventually, you would learn a lot about how data is processed in an insurance business, AND grow your computer skills. Consider switching jobs every 4 or more years, if you see a position that will let you grow your skills.

Expect to work in a lower-paying job to build cred. Eventually, you will be perceived as an experienced person, and will become a contender for higher paying jobs.

If you do not have a college degree, begin working on one part time. Just working on it is perceived as a plus, even before the degree is finished.

Don't be spooked by people who think you need a top-ranked college degree. People who worry about that OR who practice degree snobism are thinking like losers, whether they know it or not. Remember Bill Gates and Steve Jobs...no degrees, lots of brash self confidence.

Comment, anyone?

P.S.: To answer your exact question: The computer world is full of many things that say "learn me!" Your challenge is to say "no" to most of those things, and focus on one or two only. I don't know which you should say "yes" to.

220-258K a year, depending the past 2 years

program real time data for wall street

went to Columbia for CS and finance, been doing this since 1988

5 years ago I made over 350K, and the only reason I'm still doing OK is I decided to go contract

The guys I know who are working on staff, have been cut back many times, are maybe making 150K base, and bonus is now scant to non existant

Sure, go ahead, say cry me a river, but we live in CT and NJ, NY region, and our houses were bought in 1995-2005, and no one is giving us a break on mortgages or taxes, which keep going up even tho house prices going down

Re: Who here earns over $60,000 a year and what is your job?
Ill be hitting a 100k this yr..

Im a plumber, work on commission. I dont think anyone here hates there job as much as i do. I work very long hrs, holidays and on call 2-3 nights a week.. Its also a very physical job! Hate it, thinking about going back to school and getting a nice office job for a change..

I love that check at the end of the week though! The more you make and the bigger the company you work brings an even bigger stress..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 11693256

I hear you. I do high end appliance repair on commission. The harder you work, the more you make. I topped at 125k one year, but the stress is not worth it. I've lazed down to about 80k now that I'm older(54). I don't mind the work, but dealing with rich people is quite stressful.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 22793482

Yea i hate dealing with wealthy ppl my self.. I have flat rate prices, it doesnt matter who you are or how much you make if you want that water heater replaced its the same price as the last guy but the wealthy ones are the frikin cheapest, i think its just cause they are credit rich but even still i take plastic!

My stress come more from my company though, i work for roto rooter and they are never happy with the income us techs bring in. on average we bring in about 150k a week but never satisfied especialy the investors..

Im still young though late 20's so ill hang in for a while longer, the money is good but i know its effecting my health and nothing is worth my health.

Re: Who here earns over $60,000 a year and what is your job?
Started off making $10 an hour fixing PC's

Set my sight on better job. 34k working in IT at a bank.

Then got greedy again. On site IT at a corporate prison camp.
55k

Then Oracle partner came in and infected the place with Oracle ERP applications and databases. 70k year.

Left that place got snatched up by Oracle partner 80k a year.

That Oracle partner fizzled and went onto another database management corporate prison camp @ 110k year.

Then I woke up and figured out how miserable I was no matter the money.

So I have read every single book there is on the LOA. The Secret. All that rubbish. Then I figured out all this stuff was horse shit as far as the charlatans pushing the LOA and riding that train.

I won the lottery the first time, 100k. Paid off 2nd mortgage. and some of 1st mortgage.

FF 2 years. Relative I never met passed away. Received 300k inheritance.

Now I work part time as a consultant while I await my next goal, which is going to be 7 figures.

I don't usually speak to personal friends about this stuff and how it works. I have in the past and all I get is "That shit doesn't work" and I go "yes, your absolutely right, it doesn't work."

And "They" are right. It doesn't work.

My advice to my older daughter. Find something you like to do, because if your making big cash but dread your job, the cash means little.

I run my own business. I do okay. My wife is an RN. Our combined income is descent. I like what I do. I also run a small ranch. However, these days it's more a right off than a for-profit endeavor.

I am working on a advanced degree in engineering and polishing up my CNC skills. I also maintain my paramedic licence, however, I am considered 'inactive' since I only first respond as a volunteer for our local VFD.

I am a serial skill acquirer and a junkie for new trade skills. It's just me.

All that said, I rip my hair out if I had to go into a cubicle . No amount of cash could get me in that life, I turn tricks on the interstate first!
