So, who's been buying 'tonnes' of tungsten? The jewelry industry? Or, who's a known manufacture of these bars? Is this a new practice, recently discovered?

According to wikipedia:

China produced 51,000 tonnes of tungsten concentrate in 2009, which was 83% of the world output. In the prelude to WWII China's production of tungsten played a role as China could use this leverage to demand material assistance from the US government.

Most of the remaining production originated from Russia (2,500 t), Canada (1,964 t), Bolivia (1,023 t), Austria (900 t), Portugal (900 t), Thailand (600 t), Brazil (500 t), Peru (500 t) and Rwanda (500 t). Tungsten is also considered to be a conflict mineral due to the unethical mining practices observed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gold substitution

Its density, similar to that of gold, allows tungsten to be used in jewelry as an alternative to gold or platinum.

Metallic tungsten is harder than gold alloys (though not as hard as tungsten carbide), and is hypoallergenic, making it useful for rings that will resist scratching, especially in designs with a brushed finish.

Because the density is so similar to gold (tungsten is only 0.36% less dense), tungsten can also be used in counterfeiting of gold bars, such as by plating a tungsten bar with gold, which has been observed since the 1980s, or taking an existing gold bar, drilling holes, and replacing the removed gold with tungsten rods. The densities are not exactly the same, and other properties of gold and tungsten differ, but gold-plated tungsten will pass superficial tests.

In all honesty, what good will all that gold do anyone? Can you eat it? Will it keep you warm when it gets cold? When the SHTF and money is worthless what good will a shiny metal do you? It will only have a worth if someone else can use it for something. And in a full collapse what will be important to most people will be food and shelter. I have a small flock of chickens that produce eggs. Those eggs have value. My neighbor had a garden this summer and canned quite a bit of vegetables. That food has value. The farmer down the street has a large herd of cows that produce milk. That milk has value. You sit in your house and look at all your gold and silver coins and only think you have something of value. Well, I hope you find a real good recipe for that gold cause your gonna get mighty hungry. If you come to my house and want some eggs, you better have something other than gold coins to trade. The same is true for the dairy farmer and the gardener.

What you need to do is trade in all that metal and buy something that will be of real trade value. Look for things that someone can use right away. Look for people around you that have something you will need and figure out what they will need. That's how you will survive the coming storm. Because the way things are going, you are not gonna have any place to "spend" all that gold anyways. That's if the government doesn't come and take it all from you.

Having gold may not be any cure all. I guess a secret stash of gold coins carefully hidden and kept secret might be of use from time to time. But people can steal Cows and vegetables and grain in much the same way do gold, diamonds or silver.
