All I'm going to say is "Tart cherry Juice" from Montmorency Cherries!!

Take concentrated doses!! It helps you sleep and is a mild pain reliever AND is a major anti-inflammatory agent! A friend of mine takes it all the time for kidney problems - I take for RLS (Restless leg Syndrome!) Amazing stuff!

Also good for cancer. The dark sweet is the best thing in the world for a gout attack

Yes it is!! I feel better after taking - swelling, etc all gone! It's amazing stuff!!

the inversion machine helped a lot but be careful.
The lack of sleep and back spasms was solved with medical marijuana. 15 minutes after dosing the spasms dissolved.

I should look into that, no matter what they give me or I do, I always have muscle spasms. Sometimes less painful than others but they are all way there.

2 hours max sleep per night. The stress was spacing me out. Friend gave me a couple hits. RELIEF. Got my mj card and a quarter oz. Slept 9 hours first night.

Wow, sleep sounds fantastic! Absolutely looking into this, thank you!

No claims, but here are some things that may be worth researching and maybe considering in trying?

Knitbone (comfrey root)

Eggshells (crushed, powdered, you can do this yourself).

Macuna seed extract

Grape seed extract

I am in a similar kind of situation, and yes, muscle relaxants ARE useful, they allow me to get a few more hours sleep at night, instead of only 1 or 2, i get 3 or 4, sometime more.

ultimately I suspect we need to try DRX stretching back into shape, or injections to ease the grinding problems as needed, if other therapy doesnt work.

Also magnesium to help calm spasms.

Best of wishes,

Jasto

Thank you Jasto...As with all advice, I will look further into them with a view to trying them...

Many thanks..hf

Sorry to hear about your troubles, I can relate though.

The thing that has helped me is aquatherapy. And the specific thing, because I couldn't do anything else at the time, is traction.

What you do is place 5 pound weights on your legs and use floaty noodles one behind you and one in front of you and just hang there. It takes the pressure off the spine and slowly stretches your spine out.

Do this in 1 1/2 hour sessions to start. It is the best feeling to be pain free for a while. And for the spine to re aline a bit, even for just a while.

Hey, thanks for your advice on the Traction...I wasn't aware you could do this at home. Always thought they could only do it in hospital as my mother also had problems with her back and she had traction.....It helped her a lot. I will give it a try..

Thanks

Also, for the last 4 years, I haven't been able to work. I am currently on ESA (Employment & Support Allowance)... I had a medical assesment done about 2 weeks ago by the Job Centre and I'm terrified that they will take me of the sickness benefits and force me onto Job Seekers Allowance...They have stepped up on benefit fraud recently in the UK and people who are ill are still being taken of the sickness benefits. My partner is one of them, she has Mild-Moderate Learning diffilculties and was on sickness benefits for 7 years...She had a medical recently and she has been taken off sickness benefits and put onto JSA...

I am scared to death of them taking them off me and forcing me to work when I have DDD & Depression...I wouldn't be able to fight or appeal if they took me off as I wouldn't have the strenght to fight back and appeal ...

This condition has impacted my life so much, not just my working life but my sexual life with my partner..It's a good job she is very supportive and knows what I'm going through or she would of left me by now....I am at my wits end, I just want all the pain to end so I can try and lead a normal life...I would love to work as hate being stuck at home 24/7, but there is not much out there now that I can do with this...TBH, I don't see much hope for my future at the moment as sick of being let down by doctors and the hospital...I know that many people out there are suffering from this and we shouldn't have to suffer like this...

This is such a tough road, AC. I'm so sorry you are punked so badly.
Two things come mind (since you've tried EVERYthing) why not see if you might try for a fundraiser so you can have the shots, maybe given by an alternative practitioner who can find an unconventional way of procuring the meds you need and then administering them for you. 200 doc visits in 4 years give us a strong clue that's not working.

Laugh at me if you need to, but this man lives (i think) in your area and who knows? Contact him, he at the very least is lovely and kind and I can't imagine him not being moved your predicament enough to help you if he can:

I 4 out of 5 drying out dIscs in my lower lumbar.
Don't do surgery unless u want to be disabled its still a hack job maybe in 10years it will be an option. For now start losing weight and slowly work your back muscles. Do take fish oil and msm. The guy above is right about the morphine no oxy anything or you'll turn into an addict.

Get a cortIzone shot if in severe pain until you get it under control. It will take a few shots to get the right spot to take the pain away . I have to get mine about 3 inches below where the pain is for it
to take pain away.

Be warned u may get depressed from the constant pain ,and things you can't do now. Be careful not to be angry with your loved ones. Talk to them instead good luck to u

you should really be in a full body cast, holding your spine perfectly still. Maybe learn how to make a cast, and have someone help you. At least put a cast around your midsection, down around your hips, something to hold your spine perfectly still. This will force you to move in ways so you do not move or twist your spine. Wear it for a month, see how you feel.

If you can get rid of the inflammation, you will rid yourself of much of the pain.

Go on a raw food and juice fast for 10 days. You will see a huge difference in your pain level and number of muscle spasms that you get.

I injured myself in a car accident and suffered mightily for years until I did this a few months ago. It REALLY helped.

Drink and eat as much as you want of the raw foods, it won't hurt you and there is no need to go hungry.

It is not that hard to do this, you will see a huge difference by the 3rd day.

Re: In Agony With Degenerative Disc Disease - What The Hell Do I Do??
OP,

I feel very sorry for the pain you must endure. Chronic Pain will crush your mind, body and soul. I found relief from the never ending pain by changing everything I eat, drink, and what I do for the pain. I was on pain meds for over a decade and they will destroy you more than pain although they are needed in short amounts. There are herbs that decrease pain. Most are legal although the some are not. You can figure this out. Study natural ways to stop pain. Practice Yoga, Thia Chi, Qi Gong, Reiki, and other forms of eastern healing. Eat nothing but plants, fruits, and electric foods.

Try to stay out of surgery. I have had three spine surgeries with metal rods and screws. The metal will screw with the electricity in our bodies. If the body was meant to be cut on then God would have put a zipper on us. The doctors work for money. You will never find true compassion in them simply because they are not the one suffering.

Peace

 Quoting: Amy_A

Thank you...

I do want to stay away from surgery, but if I have no choice, I would get it done...

I will however, try and do everything I can before going down that road...I agree with you about food, my diet is shocking at the moment..I don't each much whatsoever because the pain makes me lose my appetite..

I agree about doctors, some are only thinking about the money...I saw an article just the other day in the Daily Mail saying that doctors surgeries here in the UK are being payed up to £25.000 a year extra to try and NOT send patients to the hospitals and instead just give them tablets to mask the pain...How bad is that?? It took them 2 years of fobbing me off with tablets before I actually got a doctor who referred me for my first scan in Jan 2011..

2 years of suffering, when they could of sent me to hospital for scan on day one..Maybe if I had the scan and physiotherapy earlier, I wouldn't be in as much pain as I am now...

I've had 2 years of suffering and my back cracking/getting worse, if anything, they caused it to get worse by not getting me to hospital & Physio straight away..wish I could sue the bastards for doing that...

Grrrrr, animals get treated better when they have something wrong with them....

Run far far away from the pain clinic.

See a nutritionist/chiropractor. The good ones are usually found in what are called "wellness clinics"

Your spine will get adjusted and you will learn stretches which will slowly take the pain away.

Good luck friend.

Sorry about your plight.

I cannot speak to it with certainty. But I do know that if a person wants to grow cartilage and bone properly.....they need a combination of the following four things. These four work together.....and need each other for proper absorption.

Calcium

Vitamin D3

Magnesium

Vitamin K2

Re: In Agony With Degenerative Disc Disease - What The Hell Do I Do??
Chiropractors can make things worse. In my case at least.

After 6 years in pain, I saw one of the best docs I could find in California. My injury was covered by workers comp. I completely understand the difficulties of getting appropriate care.

I had a 2 level lumbar microdisectomy. The doc used super tiny tools to remove the parts of the discs that were hitting the nerves. The structure of the spine is left intact. They don't remove the lamina with this method.

He also increased the diameter of the nerve passages where they pass through the spine.

I had releif the moment that I awoke from the anesthesia.

No pins. And no fusion. When you fuse the spine, you put all the pressure on the disc above the fusion and end up causing additional issues.

I know I am a rare case regarding successful surgery.

Do extensive research and find an experienced doc that can do this procedure.

Cannabis for spasms. Cannabis Indica to be specific.

Stretching every day. And staying active.

Hang in there OP. It's tough. Hope this helps.

Another thought, OP.

The chair you sit in and the bed you sleep in. You need xtra soft.
I might ask your family to go on a furniture hunt for you to maybe replace these items you use most frequently.
Doesn't need to be new-new just soft as all getout.
I hear you that you don't have extra. But if you find you do for now to get a mattress COVER that is NOT memoryfoam (miserable material)
If not goosedown then fiberbed poly substitute at least 4" thick.

Also don't wear a belt or unyieling pants that are too snug around the waist.

Dear Friend, I understand and feel your pain. I am not joking and truly am empathetic to what you are experiencing. Both myself and SO have been on a similar path and if you permit me, I will give you a few words of advice. Take these words and choose carefully, for what you will do in the next year will impact your entire life in the future.
DO NOT...I repeat DO NOT have surgery. Worst thing I ever did. Handicapped me for certain. You must have the appt. with the Pain Clinic. Ensure that the docs there are anethesiologists, for if they suggest epi-durals, GET THEM.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24200964

Wow, thank you very much AC for your advice. I'm sorry to hear you have experienced many problems with it...Seems like you have been through the wars with it. I really can't imagine living with it for 20 years like you have. I'm 32 and had it four years and I know I will have it for life. It's just getting in control of the pain that may lead me to living close to a normal life...

Even though I was turned down for Epidurals, I know that when I eventually get to the pain clinic, they can do them there if they see a reason to do them..So, I may have been turned down once but at least the option can come up again in the Pain Clinic..

I have saved yours & others advice to notepad so that I can look up the information and advice quick in the future..

I think the most important issue I am going to have to deal with soon is the work/benefit situation...I want to work, I have 3 years Estates agency experience and 12 years bar/cellar/supervisory work...but I'm unable to do bar work anymore...As for Estate agents, I don't know, it was the most boring job ever and was paid pittance, besides, will I be ok sitting in a chair most of the day??

IDK what to do, I'm worried about money situation at the minute until I get some inheritance that is due to me...My doctor has advised me not to work but the Benefit agency over here might decide I can do something that won't hurt my back and take the money off me....

AC, how did you cope with work if you were working, or did you have to stop work due to your problems??

Re: In Agony With Degenerative Disc Disease - What The Hell Do I Do??
There is only one way to solve a chronic lower back issue. I call it a "spinal revival". If you try to treat it an hr here and an hr there you will not get anywhere. You have to set up treatment stations and go from one to the other until you are able to get a pop that will decompress and realign the vertebra. This can take a whole day, sometimes two! There are no shortcuts. Your spinal muscles lock up as a protective measure if something is compressed or misaligned. You have to understand that your spine will not normalize until you get the decompression and realignment that you need.

My stations consist of a back2life machine, a Ma roller, a DaVinci tool, a yoga swing, an inverted "u" type horizontal roman chair and a cushioned yoga mat. Use the back2life machine as per instructions, make sure you use ankle weights and keep your butt pressed against the base of the machine and legs pressed against the knee supports. After you do 1 cycle on the machine lay on your side on the yoga mat and do pelvic tilts from a side lying position. A pelvic tilt is just arching your back towards the rear and releasing it so that it goes back to the neutral position. There is no forward movement. Thrust rearward to arch the back and release. This lubricates the discs, helps release the muscles, and helps to get decompressions and realignments of the spine. I generally do 300 on my right side and follow it with the same on the left.

Then I use the Ma roller and again follow it with pelvic tilts. Then I use the "V" shaped side of the DaVinci tool moving up and down the problem areas, and follow with the pelvic tilts. Then I move to the yoga swing (similar to an inversion table but does not strain knees and ankles). I have it about 12 " off the floor, mine hangs on a power tower chin up bar but you can also hang it on a door frame chin up bar. I face upwards and rest my feet against the door frame. Let it decompress the spine for 10-15 min then back to the pelvic tilts.

Then I use the roman chair so that I hang from it bending forward 90 degrees at the waist. Then pelvic tilts. Once I complete the whole cycle I repeat it. If I take a break I lie on the yoga mat - don't sit down - that will compress the back. Once you do get the pop you need to continue with the pelvic tilts until the disc rehydrates - every hour may be necessary. It is also good to do pelvic tilts in bed before falling asleep and again in the morning.

Supplement wise I recommend the bone and joint formula from straussheartdrops.com. I corrected 20 years of chronic back problems doing this. Took me a while to figure it out. Hope this helps.

LISTEN AND PAY HEED. If you really want to do somthing to help yourselfs then forget about surgery. For the time being ask your doctor to put you on MORAPHINE and only MORAPHINE. Does the least damage and thats what they take themselves. Then go buy an INVERSION TABLE. Start slow. Use everyday. Morning when you get up and evening before bed. You are just suffering from gravity. We pound our bodys down all our lives. Hanging on a board stretches things back out and allows things to go back into place. Little by little. I had and did the exact same thing. I don't take the moraphine anymore. I am like a 40 year old again. NO SURGERY. Better than ever.

Thank you for your advice...

With regards to Morphine, they are VERY reluctant to give it out in the UK due to people getting hooked on it or something....

I have been taking Zapain, which is Codeine Phospate 30mg & paracetamol 500mg mixed together...These usually take the edge of the pain away, however, since last Monday, I have had these muscle spasms and/or Nerve trapping real bad and the Zapains haven't done anything...That's why I had to ring docs and get the Tramadol on Friday. They are suppose to be stronger than Zapain but I haven't seen no pain relief from these either....

Might get one of them inversion tables...Willing to try anything to be honest...Thinking about it, is this similar to what they do in hospital when they put you on Traction or something..Sounds the same sort of stuff but the do it a different way...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24289559

They will always say that ops are addictive. Just tell your doctor so is sex and coffee and cigarettes. Just keep going in and even exagerated the pain really act and keep bothering them and he will give in to you. Those other pills are the shits. They are beta blockers and shut down your brain. OPS are natural. The inversion tables are great. They really do work. They realease so much pressure it isn't even funny. I also joined a rec center and would do streches in the pool. Your totally weightless and it feels good. I will always have and use my table. I can dump myself all the way over now. It really helps with circulation also which in turn aids your back and the nerves. Every day when you get up tell your back that your helping it and its going to get better. It Will. Just start slow. 30% then work your self up. I'm really pulling for you. I know what kind of pain your in. God Bless.
