World on Track for Record Food Prices 'within a year' Due to US Drought
Brace yourself for some painful "agflation". That is the shorthand for agricultural commodity inflation, otherwise known as rising food prices.

They are being driven upwards by the climb in grain and oilseed prices as US crops weather the country's worst drought since 1936, while the farming belts of Russia and South America suffer through similar water shortages.

What we are seeing represents the third major rally in global grain and oilseed prices in just half a decade.

Worse is to come, new research warns. World food prices look set to hit an all-time high in the first quarter of next year – and then keep rising, according to the analysis from Rabobank, a specialist in agricultural commodities.

By June 2013, the basket of food prices tracked by the United Nations could climb 15pc from current levels, according to the bank's analysts.

"The coming year will see the world economy re-enter a period of agflation as grain and oilseed stocks decline to critically low levels, pushing the FAO [Food and Agricultural Organisation] Food Price Index above record nominal highs set in February 2011," they say.

today's shortages are being seen more in crops used as animal feed, such as corn and soybeans.

Horse owners fret as hay shortage pushes up prices

As she dropped hay into her horses' stalls, Lisa Ponke said she considers herself one of the lucky ones.

She still has worries about increases in grain prices and pending repairs, but unlike some horse owners, Ponke, who owns Day Dreams Farm Equine Rescue and Rehabilitation in Cottrellville Township with her husband, Dave, will be able to feed her horses through the winter.

With a 50% decrease in hay production and each bale ranging from $4 to $9.50, many horse owners are puzzled over how to make ends meet this year.

Ponke said she anticipates a flood of horses on the market this fall because private owners won't be able to afford hay or grain.

"The biggest problem is, we will start seeing more starving and dumped horses from private people because they can no longer afford to keep them," she said. "Rescues like us won't be able to help."

Another concern--water:

Amidst Record Drought, Report Shows Massive Water Requirements For Nonrenewable Fuels

If you haven't heard about the major droughts afflicting most of the US this summer, then you may just have your head in the sand (or more likely a water-parched dusty hole).

In fact, the media department of the Drought Monitor website ran out of combinations for modifying the words "intensify" and "widespread" when referring to the drought in their headlines.

Indeed, if you have been keeping tabs on the situation, "megadrought" and "a new normal?" sound highly familiar by now. With farmers nervous about a modern-day Dust Bowl taking hold, the question on everyone's mind is, how long will it last?

This visceral threat of water scarcity puts a new report about the true cost of fossil fuels in perspective. "The Hidden Costs of Electricity: Comparing the Hidden Costs of Power Generation Fuels" evaluates, among other parameters, the water demands of fuel sources such as biomass, coal, nuclear, natural gas, solar, and wind.

I never get hummingbirds in my garden, but last week we did spot one--it hovered around one of my potted plants for about ten minutes, then disappeared.

Drought forcing hummingbirds into suburban backyard gardens

Suburban residents may have noticed an influx of ruby-throated hummingbirds flitting around their backyards this summer.

The small birds are looking for food in new places because of the prolonged summer drought, experts said. The birds feed on the nectar of flowers and small insects like mosquitoes, gnats, fruit flies, small bees and spiders.

“The drought has caused a reduction in their natural food supply, so if they're looking for food in forest preserves and can't find it, they'll gravitate toward people's backyards, which are usually kept well-watered and full of food,” said Tim Joyce of Mount Prospect, who works at Wild Birds Unlimited, an upscale bird seed and supplies store with locations in Arlington Heights and Glenview.

I heard Costco brand olive oil is one of the best to buy.

Drizzle and drought

The soaring cost of dressing a salad

ANCIENT artefacts unearthed by archaeologists show that olive oil has been an integral part of Mediterranean life for thousands of years. Appetite for the stuff has since spread: supermarket shelves in northern Europe and other rich countries bow under the weight of an array of oils. The Mediterranean, with its baking summers and warm, wet winters, usually provides an ideal climate for olive groves. But a drought in Spain is having a dramatic impact on the market, according to Thomas Mielke of Oil World, a research firm.

Spain is the Saudi Arabia of olive oil, accounting for nearly half of global production. The absence of rain in Spain might reduce total global output by around 20% compared with a year ago, when the world was awash in over 3m tonnes of olive oil.

High levels of production then had pushed prices to a nine-year low. But over the past three months the price of extra virgin olive oil, the best-quality stuff, has risen by over 50%, to about $3,400 a tonne.

No, the farm bill has very little to do with farming. The majority of the money is for food stamps and other free food programs. A small amount is for the corporate farmer.

The rest of us get nothing from the bill. The blame for food prices is inflation from the Federal Reserve printing of money, and the weather.

Please remember, in the future when the farmer is demonized as evil/corrupt/greedy, that we are not. We work long hours for not much money. But I see how the system works and know that we are next on the hit list.

Drought forces Texas town to consider reusing wastewater

The Texas drought is forcing one city to consider a direct reuse of wastewater as drinking water.

Because of the lack of water, the town of Brownwood may tap into their wastewater by installing a system that cycles toilet water through a series of treatment plants and right back into the municipal water supply, MyFoxAustin reports.

"The drought can be a very persuasive argument to look for new sources of water," Jorge Arroyo, the Director of Innovative Water Technologies with the Texas Water Development Board told MyFoxAustin.

With the state population expected to hit 50 million people in 50 years, Arroyo says new water resources must be found.

The idea of building a toilet to faucet water system has some residents questioning the sanitation
