the farmer's almanac is calling for winter 2012 2013 to be colder than last year.....but not the coldest ever.

. . . itis harder to heat the upstairs in this house, because thereis no heat up there. Since i heat the basement itwill be easier to heat one room (downstairs) than trying to get heat to go upstairs . . . for one reason.

I moved everything in that room, and expect to spend the Winter in there. I have no tv, but do have a computer, as you can see. The whole house will be heated to about 50; my one room will be whatever . . .

Well I hope it makes it easier and warmer for you.If you have some candles that would help some.Just one candle in a room can make it feel warmer.Takes the chill off a bit and just seeing it makes you feel warmer.I keep a look out for all the discounted,really cheap ones throughout the year and buy them to burn in the cold months.Can always warm your hands with them too.

Was debating doing something similar myself. There are a couple rooms that could be shut off and it would only take a couple sticks of wood every couple hrs. to keep the smaller space toasty. Not sure if it would get claustrophobic before winter was over, or if it would be too warm for my dog to hang in the rooms with me, but have been mulling it over. Seems wasteful to heat a whole house when it's not needed, but the bigger space sure feels good. LOL.

The locusts (cicadas) began their "sounds" if you can call it that, in the last week of June this year. Never in my life have I heard them that early. It's always been the middle of July.

Its always 3 months from the time they start until frost and colder weather. Scattered frost was in my area last night.

This may sound ridiculous but my father who's been a woodsman all his life said he's never seen squirrels bury so many nuts and acorns directly below their nest. I guess they spread them out over a larger area in case an area gets found out. He said when they place them right below their nesting tree we're in for one hard winter. Take that for what you will.

Last year I was inspired to leave my beautiful northern farm, with an insight that we were soon to see both economic hard times and extreme weather events

so far, the weather events have been droughts and extreme heat, so it looks as if I have been wrong

but it will be interesting to see how this winter goes, as so far the reports from International Falls already are breaking records for coldest temperatures to date

I remember one Winter eve, at Christmas, i went outside and the cold "burned" my lungs. So i know how really cold it can get on a full moon.

I feel as if thereis something i should remember about this, as if i try to figure it out real hard, iwill know what itis i am trying to remember or should know about this. So far the only thing with which iam coming up is that thereis going to be a terrible, bitter cold spell at full moon this Winter. My imagination willnot conceive of what it could be; this must be something ihave never before experienced. I live in northern Wi. Have never seen mice like this year. The mice have been trying to get in since august. Usually they try to get in around late october. They know when it's going to be a hard long winter, I don't know how but they do.

I also have been hung up about his winter all summer. Everytime I think about it I get the nesting instinct. Upgraded my supplies of wool, down and goretex in july. Just a feelin, but ive been talking about it the last two weeks. Feels real.

It was 38F this morning here in Tenn. Had the woodstove stoked all morning.

I think it will be colder than usual in some places this winter. I can usually tell by the amount of ass fat on the deer. Haven't been able to hunt yet. I usually don't until the second week of October because it's too hot.

Looking for nature signs. The squirrels have been busy early. The nuts are falling fast but the tree rats are gathering them just as quickly. None stay on the ground for long. They started cutting early, too. Geese flying early.

That's even more chilling than the weather report. People no longer have the instincts that animals have. Our climate controlled existence has offered comfort but we've sacrificed something of importance for the luxury.

Animals, trees, vegetables and fruits know. They know and it would pay to notice them. All of nature speaks to us and if we watch and listen, we'll hear.

. . . that reminds me . . . i went into a panic the other day about getting coal in NOW at the farm. Iam staying at the town house, and hardly ever go to the mini farm, because i always want to cry or something everytime i go there. Here in town i have electric and city gas heat, and propane stove if all fails. Here again, ihave been in a panic worrying about will the propane run out and they cannot get in to refill it, this isnot me . . .

I live somewhat rural and I have had the feeling for a few months that it would be a bad winter.We have had almost no winter the last few years so stands to reason at some point that is going to change.We have power outages in most any storm here so last month I bought enough kerosene to last 3 to 4 weeks should power go out.I guess I went ahead and bought it because I was thinking it will be much more expensive later this year.Its already $4 a gallon.

Changed the wicks and totally cleaned both my heaters.Have a small one for when its not so cold and a bigger one for really cold.
Thought about taking the gas grill to the garage but felt like I might be cooking on it this winter so decided to leave it on the back porch in case I needed to cook on the burner.Got an extra 15 lb tank of propane for the grill.

Have enough firewood for about 3 weeks burning.Not my favorite way to heat but a back up for my other back up.

After thinking it over a bit OP I do believe you are on to something.Didnt really think about it but I have been preparing for winter over a month now which is very early for me to do so.Already took the lightweight summer curtains down and put up the ones with winter backing...wow hadnt noticed how much ahead I was till I started typing it out.

we have 10 years of good will wool sweaters stored. think 140 sweaters that cost someone 50usd or more. We only store 100 percent wool/merino/etc. We wear them and the wife pulls em apart for yarn to knit other warm stuff. 10 wool blankets, 12 sleeping bags (6 down). Lots of wool clothing already. Wool fleece and the wife's chromsky spinning wheel as well. USG ECW goretex and USG polypro ECW. Most of this summers investment was mil surp.

I just bought bulgarian wool trench coats, wool socks, swiss garrison hats, 10 balaclavas, 144 pairs wool shooter mit liners, two pairs us shooter mits shell, goretex boonie hats for over balaclavas, 18 pairs swiss wool pants, sweedish field jackets and other stuff.

We both ride bicycles all winter here in west virginia so we gear up for winter. We also gear up for surviving a winter with no grid and no heat. Outside if nessissary. I used to favor the ultra light/high tech/goretex/holofill stuff but that shit wears out fast I have found and is difficult to repair. I have actually revamped all preps to cotton canvass over nylon, buckles, buttons and straps over zippers, and other such gear tech throwbacks for long term wear and shelf life. The nylon shit I have from 2002 is now shit. The korean war era wool shirt I have worn yearly since high school is barely worn in contrast.

The new tech warm stuff is good for troops with a solid supply line. Otherwise its gimicky crap if you have to live outdoors all winter or dont have a resupply. Let alone how it rates as a ten year investment.

we also heat the house to 45 deg F except for the kitchen and an adjoining small room with this computer and the waterpipes. We sleep under or in wool or down blankets/sleeping bags in the coldest part of the house. Nothing like a 70USD jan heating bill. Fuck working to pay for anything more.

don't panic, you're on the right time table

you are far ahead of most, just perhaps slightly behind your own very prepared timetable

make sure you have plenty fo wood to burn and share

wood, wool, warm water....its actually easier to stay warm in cold places than to cool off in hot places if the power goes out

I can't tell you why I kept thinking all last summer were would soon have a deal breaker of a winter

again, perhaps it will be nothing, but it never hurts to be prepared, and all of this will keep (and almost never gets cheaper, so why not buy now?)
