Re: A Winter ecord breaker of all record breakers
OP isnt it usually much warmer upstairs than down.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24374642

. . . itis harder to heat the upstairs in this house, because thereis no heat up there. Since i heat the basement itwill be easier to heat one room (downstairs) than trying to get heat to go upstairs . . . for one reason.

I moved everything in that room, and expect to spend the Winter in there. I have no tv, but do have a computer, as you can see. The whole house will be heated to about 50; my one room will be whatever . . .
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24346301

Well I hope it makes it easier and warmer for you.If you have some candles that would help some.Just one candle in a room can make it feel warmer.Takes the chill off a bit and just seeing it makes you feel warmer.I keep a look out for all the discounted, really cheap ones throughout the year and buy them to burn in the cold months. Can always warm your hands with them too.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 24374642

. . . "candles" . . . that word gave me a chill . . . under the circumstances candles would be too dangerous . . . fire.

Nice hearing people talk up good wool. I should be looking for some good wool for fall and winter too.

I kept some odds and ends of pure cashmere in case the power goes out. Cashmere sweater dresses and oversize 2 piece outfits in strange colors, not for the wardrobe but to sleep in if the house is cold.

Re: A Winter ecord breaker of all record breakers
. . . this could be a warning about the weather, but it hit me tonight, at dusk. I was outside and it felt like it does during a full moon; i looked up and saw itwas only about three quarters full.

At this time of the year it can get quite cold during a full moon, but the fact that itis already feeling like a full moon (at night), i suspect we best be ready for a real shocker when the moon does become full, and November, and i donot even want to think about the December fullmoon, not to dare mention January . . .

Late during Summer, I made arrangements, for some strange reason, to move out of my upstairs bedroom; into a warm, tight little room off the kitchen for the Winter . . . an animal, out of instinct, would do something like that . . . It was a terrible move with heavy stuff being moved in and out of rooms and up and down staires . . . i never did such a crazy thing in my life before. So i think iam making a prediction of the worse/coldest Winter wehave ever had (a record breaker of all record breakers).

I gave it one star and suggested a pin because this is full of wtf fail.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1227147

wtf fail, huh

isn't it a little early to be calling fail on a thread about a period weeks to months away?

I've given this thread 5 stars for discussion

Re: A Winter ecord breaker of all record breakers
Was debating doing something similar myself. There are a couple rooms that could be shut off and it would only take a couple sticks of wood every couple hrs. to keep the smaller space toasty. Not sure if it would get claustrophobic before winter was over, or if it would be too warm for my dog to hang in the rooms with me, but have been mulling it over. Seems wasteful to heat a whole house when it's not needed, but the bigger space sure feels good. LOL.

The locusts (cicadas) began their "sounds" if you can call it that, in the last week of June this year. Never in my life have I heard them that early. It's always been the middle of July.

Its always 3 months from the time they start until frost and colder weather. Scattered frost was in my area last night.

This may sound ridiculous but my father who's been a woodsman all his life said he's never seen squirrels bury so many nuts and acorns directly below their nest. I guess they spread them out over a larger area in case an area gets found out. He said when they place them right below their nesting tree we're in for one hard winter. Take that for what you will.
 Quoting: shadasonic

. . . "hard" Winter, probably, yes, but at full moon, when it really gets cold, i think wewill be looking for a knew word, instead of "hard" . . . probably a word not yet in the dictionary.

Oh they can be dangerous for sure but I use mine very safely.I always use the ones inside a jar and then put the jar inside an enclosed safe burner.Took the wick area out of the old kero lanterns with a handle and place the candle inside and close it down.I never leave one burning if i am not looking at it etc. They give out a lot of warmth but they have to be used safely.Putting the jar inside a larger coffee can helps make more heat too.
Have also closed the damper in the fireplace and put a couple in there. Can close the doors to keep the heat then open at time. Not much safer place to burn one than setting in the fireplace.

Well to be fair, I was taught that wool retains 80% of its heat when soaking wet. It saved my ass from dying of hypothermia/exposure on a rainy 35 deg F overnight with no shelter. I had wool pants, socks, korean era wool shirt and a wool hat. soaked. made a small fire in a volcano stove wiht wet wood. Smoked the rest of my stuff figuring I was gonna die. Ah to be 19 again.

I live in northern Wi. Have never seen mice like this year. The mice have been trying to get in since august. Usually they try to get in around late october. They know when it's going to be a hard long winter, I don't know how but they do.
 Quoting: Northman

. . . a big, fat, fuzzy spider came in in August, and made a huge, beautiful web in my kitchen window. I didnot know what to do as i sadly watched her day by day grow smaller and smaller . . . she made a mistake . . . she came in too soon. Now she is gone . . . Lived here about 3 years; never had that happen before, nor have i ever seen a spider that looked like her. I guess you would call her shaggy. She looked shaggy, big, strong and healthy . . . at first anyway. She reminded me of my treasured, Neva Masquerade, which looks prehistorc in many ways. The others look like the Kremlin kitty.

I put up a thread 2 months ago telling people to start getting ready for Winter. LOL. I really do think were going to get nailed. Maybe not so much cold but lots of snow and choas. If SHTF during winter and the roads close and you don't have supplies your truly screwed. I have enough of everything that I could dig in all winter and never leave the yard. I'm putting the finishing touches on everything right now. I figure we have 2 more weeks until the swing into real fall starts then who knows whats going to happen. I'm not taking any chances. Winter can kill really quick if your not prepared. Stay safe and get lots of firewood ready. if you don't have backup heat a tent inside your home with a candle can save your life. Take care.

I also have been hung up about his winter all summer. Everytime I think about it I get the nesting instinct. Upgraded my supplies of wool, down and goretex in july. Just a feelin, but ive been talking about it the last two weeks. Feels real.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 6524811

. . . basically we donot do any Dooming about Winter here at godlike, so your reaction must be "real", and very original, and not induced, so i guess that means me too. Guess that means we can trust our instincts after all. But still i "know" thereis something more that we should know . . . maybe a dream . . . maybe something . . . somewhere . . . at some moment will tell me . . . an idea maybe . . .

I don't know, but I feel like I won't be here come winter and not a scary like death kind of feeling that I just won't be here to see what is coming next. Maybe still in october, but not in november..after that my mind goes blank, no christmas tree nothing.. I can't say anything what is going to happen and usually I am very good at being intuitive.

Squirrels around here in northern Ohio are burying theirs all over the place. I guess you're going to have a bad winter there, but we're going to have an awesome sunny one here!

woop!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1227147

. . . the squirrel difference makes sense. My premonition isnot about anything normal, such as weather just being colder, earlier, longer etc. . . . there is something else and has to do with the full moon and how unusually cold it CAN get. In other words just when you thought it was really really cold . . . the full moon, and no to little time to act, and many willnot even realize what is happening.

What do we know of that can hit that fast. Let me say this - forget it . . . I just realized what it is. Nibiru. She is going to throw us out into space, or we will be drug out and dropped back, or itwill be something about her tail. Or what else could it be . . . ? . . .

Thats not how nibiru will work if thats what your feeling. Rotation stoppage first then restart. The north american continent will be warmer after a pole shift but dark until the dust settles and rainy and drizzle.Yes the weather temperature can drop like a rock. 4 years ago it was 10 degrees then -36 in a day. Storm and stayed like that for a week. We all lost power for 5 days before it came back. I have wood heat and gravity water so I was ok. Many out here have wood heat but pumps for water. I only say this because I am a women and have lived on a mountain top with all the responsibilities of my place by myself. There isn't anything I can't cope with on my own. Livestock and the whole nine yards. Women whom depend on a man and that man gets taken a way or gets hurt or gets killed that can't fend for themselves in an emergency are truly screwed.
