Tennessee A Low Humming / Rumble Noise ?
I live in Tennessee.

I can't figure it out. it's been the loudest I've heard for 3 day's now.

It sounds like a big idling diesel engine in distance that never seems to quit. I first started hearing it in 2006 and it's been going on ever since.

It's really frustrating to constantly hear it and not know what it is.

It has stopped probably about 10 times since it began in 2006 till tonight where it's louder and more annoying then ever. grumpy2

I've tried to record the noise but it seems impossible.

also we've had almost a week with no clouds in the sky at all.

What part of Tn do you live in? I am not far from the Tn Alabama state line above Huntsville, Al. I have not heard anything, but since I am up most the night, I will keep an ear open.

Middle Tennessee here. The sky has been cloud free and is the deepest darkest blue I've ever seen. Creepy.

I'm about 35 miles from Knoxville, Tn this noise just seems really odd it's just loud enough to disturb your sleep but not loud enough to get a general direction of where it's coming from.

I've had to use a small box fan at night just so I can drown out the noise and get some sleep.

sometime I can almost feel the noise in the ground but I'm not sure if I'm just imagining that feeling.

You need to sit in a dark room or stand around outside for 30 or so minutes before going outside and looking up.

I live around the same area. I have these binoculars that I bought from an army surplus store for 50 bucks. They have a basic filter that picks up a little bit more light. They are pretty amazing. They literally turn the sky into a sea of stars.

Hey OP, try this:

Use a post hole digger to place a 4x4 post in the ground. Do not attach anything to it. Get a stethoscope and place it to the 4x4 and listen.

Wood is a great conductor of sound, if the hum is coming from the earth, this will tell you.

The deeper the post the better.

that's a good idea. I'll have to see if I've got the 4x4 in the shed I not sure tho since it's been a while since I need one.

one extra thought to add is that I can only hear the noise inside my house at all hours day/night. I go outside and don't hear anything but the slight rustle of leaves on the tree's and other animals moving about.

Okay. here's a funny but true situation that applies to the HUM.

I was a Master Electrician for 14 years and I regularly was called out on service calls. A client of mine called about 4 years after I wired her house and reported a hum in her house that nobody could explain. She had called a few other related trades out to try to identify the source of this low hum.

The first thing I did was to isolate the house by turning off all the electricity. The Hum stopped. One by one I switched on the breakers until the hum started again according to the client.

... It turns out the door chime plunger was stuck in the strike position and was causing the low voltage transformer in the attic to overheat and hum.

...had the insulation in the attic covered the transformer, the house would have burned down. The hum was going non stop for two weeks since the UPS man rang the door bell, dropped package and drove off.

New Chime & Transformer 40.00....

I'm 40 miles NE of Knoxville and haven't heard a thing, but you're right about the clear, blue sky.

As far as the noise, I haven't heard what you're hearing, but a few months ago I went out to the car to leave and heard what I thought was a jet although I couldn't see one.
I ran my errand and came home about 30 minutes later and the sound was still there.
I kept checking for about an hour and it finally stopped.

I don't have a clue what it was, but it seemed to be coming from the sky.

I'm North of Knoxville. the electrician above made me wonder if it's not this power sub station that I live next to it's less than 500 feet from my 1 acre property.

there are about 4 or 5 small house size transformers over there that may be reverberating inside my house but outside be silent. verysad

If that is where it's coming from there would be nothing I could do short of moving and that's not an option for me right now.

but in short it does make me wanna slaphim somebody for causing this stress over the last 6 years.

Re: Tennessee A Low Humming / Rumble Noise ?
I Live in East Tn and for the last 5 days. If you go out side around 2 to 4 am you can hear a Low rumble or I would say that is like a Jet flying low but it never goes away. It don't change tone's But it's very constant. I could also explain it as a Old school Jet Heater for shop's. The day's that I have hear this noise has been from 3/20/13 to 3/24/13. Every night i have heard it. I don't live near a big airport. I live on a Mountain and have lived here for about 4 years. So i know the sounds out here and this sound is never been heard before by me or my Wife. I go Hunting all the time so it's not trees moving or rushing air in the Mountains. Sometime's it seem's like you can feel it.

Very Weird and Strange.

I live in Grainger County, Tennessee, and often hear a low, rumbling noise. I can hear it inside my house, but it's louder outside. Tonight (5/07/13), it is very loud outside. It sounds like a jet, but it's not going away.
