Don't bother with graduate school

What state? What major?

What state do you live in? What kind of degree?

I live in Michigan, and looking to receive a Masters in Education in Physics.

Physics teachers are hard to come by. I think you got poor advice.

Make calls to schools and ask about employment - speak to the chair/head of the science department. Tell them of your plans.

Are you really turned off about going out of state?

the school may get a kick back for how many people join certain programs ...

remember they are doing it for a profit, not to teach ...

I figured it was Michigan or Ohio for some reason, If you really want to get the degree go for it. My graduate degree was cheaper than my bachelors.

I agree I think the advisor was having a bad day, I find for the most part advisors always give crap information.

That's your problem right there. Education departments want you to shut up and drink the kool aid. Heaven forbid you should become employable in the private sector.

I have called around and spoken to the head of the department, after all it was him who suggested this educational route for me. I am not turned off by moving but, my husband has a great job here and has been with this company for 18yrs. I think this women just didn't like me much. I came back feeling defeated instead of holding a class schedule in hand. Its been bothering me all night I guess my confidence was shaken a bit. What bothers me is that perhaps this women is just telling me like it is and that I shouldn't waste anymore money on an advanced degree that may not pay off.

Wow, usually schools advise you to buy the degree no matter what. What's your undergrad?

I thank you all for your responses. I know this is not the usual thread on GLP but, I respect the opinions and knowledge of so many of you on this forum. I need to stick with my gut and pursue this path and disregard that ladies advice.

NO dont listen to her!! Go ahead and work on your degree it is something you will have and NOBODY can ever take away! You never know where life will take you and you dont want to look back and kick your self for not taking the initiative.

Undergrad I majored in Physics with a minor in astronomy and graduated with a 3.4 GPA which, is not genius status however, it puts me on track for graduate studies.

The real question is, can you afford it? If you can, why not take an online masters if it's available from a more reputable school (if your school isn't that well known). If you're going to blow money you might as well blow it somewhere good.

Because you are female you will have an advantage in hiring as a teacher in these hard science fields.

I'm surprised another woman in education would try to talk you out of it.

P.S. I'm not saying affirmative action/quotas are right (far from it) just stating my understanding of the facts.

I think you missed the part where the OP stated that the masters would be in education, not physics.
