Milky Way is Surrounded by Halo of Hot Gas
NASA's Chandra Shows Milky Way is Surrounded by Halo of Hot Gas

milkywayhalo

Astronomers have used NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to find evidence our Milky Way Galaxy is embedded in an enormous halo of hot gas that extends for hundreds of thousands of light years. The estimated mass of the halo is comparable to the mass of all the stars in the galaxy.

If the size and mass of this gas halo is confirmed, it also could be an explanation for what is known as the "missing baryon" problem for the galaxy...

... Chandra observed eight bright X-ray sources located far beyond the galaxy at distances of hundreds of millions of light-years. The data revealed X-rays from these distant sources are absorbed selectively by oxygen ions in the vicinity of the galaxy.

The scientists determined the temperature of the absorbing halo is between 1 million and 2.5 million kelvins, or a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun...

...This new research provides evidence the hot gas halo enveloping the Milky Way is much more massive than the warm gas halo...

..."It may extend for a few hundred thousand light-years around the Milky Way or it may extend farther into the surrounding local group of galaxies. Either way, its mass appears to be very large."...

...Baryons are particles, such as protons and neutrons, which make up more than 99.9 percent of the mass of atoms found in the cosmos. Measurements of extremely distant gas halos and galaxies indicate the baryonic matter present when the universe was only a few billion years old represented about one-sixth the mass and density of the existing unobservable, or dark, matter.

to me it seams more like our galaxy is in the middle of a sun. wonder if there could be anything at the center of our sun. or even our earth. makes you think when they keep finding these magnetic or heated plasma surrounding everything. almost like a biological skin enveloping the organs... as above so below. That's a great connection when it is known that this 'gas' is a few hundred times hotter than the surface of the sun.

Also, this means that the gas has massive energy, and with that comes 'charge' and vast magnetic fields. The interaction is just crazy complex in that soup of electrically charged particles and swirling magnetic fields. Taking the visual as an entirety is more simple than the details, for sure.

Thread: Universal, Primordial Magnetic Fields Discovered in Deep Space
[link to www.sciencedaily.com]
ScienceDaily (Sep. 22, 2010) — Scientists from the California Institute of Technology and UCLA have discovered evidence of "universal ubiquitous magnetic fields" that have permeated deep space between galaxies since the time of the Big Bang...

..."We found the signs of primordial magnetic fields in deep space between galaxies," Ando said.

Physicists have hypothesized for many years that a universal magnetic field should permeate deep space between galaxies, but there was no way to observe it or measure it until now.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 865798

This answers other space/deep space phenomena as well. The commonality of these findings is enough to make it known that charge and magnetism are foundational...um, trying to think of the proper word...foundational/fundamental structures/functions/and motives for the entire universe.

Remember, these gases are named plasma because of the life-like qualities they have. So, 99.9% of the universal behaves as if it is alive. WTF! The universe is truly alive, just living differently from the way we meat bags live.

Thread: 99.9% of the Universe Displays - Life-Like, Self-Organizing Properties, has Tendency to Form Cellular/Filamentary Structures - PLASMA
What is Plasma?

Plasma is the fourth state of matter. It differs from solids, liquids and gases in so far as it's atoms are divided into free-floating 'negative' electrons and 'positive' ions (an atom which has lost its electron/s). It is sometimes referred to as an ionized gas.

Students are generally taught about only three states of matter, and when Plasma does get a mention, little importance is assigned. Not only should plasma be added to the list, but the order should be reversed to put it in first place. The reasons for this will become clear.

The term Plasma was borrowed from blood plasma in order to describe its almost life-like and self-organising properties.

Plasma sometimes emits light when under the excitation of electrical and magnetic fields. Polar auroras bear witness to this fact.

Although there are uncertainties, the work by Gupta and colleagues provides the best evidence yet that the galaxy's missing baryons have been hiding in a halo of million-kelvin gas that envelopes the galaxy. The estimated density of this halo is so low that similar halos around other galaxies would have escaped detection.
[link to www.spacedaily.com]

Man, to me that sounds like a partial discovery of dark energy/matter.

I may be off on that, but it makes perfect sense.

Its got massive amounts of mass, but density is very low. So much so, that although it is so utterly massive in mass, it is not detectable in other galaxies!

I am not an astronomer, here, OP...but maybe you
would know this....
Let's say you are the NASA Chandra taking picturs
out there....your camera is going to be shooting
images on ONE PLANE, right....a flat 180 degrees?
Then....let's say you are the Milky Way with your
bubble of hot gas spinning around in outer space.
If Chandra takes the picture...it's only going to
have an image of ONE SLICE--at a 180 degree plane
of the whole unit.
What if the Milky Way is INSIDE A BLACK HOLE....
You wouldn't expect the Chandra camera to be able
to take a picture of a 360 degree image of the
black hole...She'd only get the ONE SLICE, without
the postive and negative poles/or structure of the
entire unit.
It would be very interesting to see Chandra pictures
ABOVE the gas cloud and BELOW the gas cloud for
any strangeness in density and magnetics.
Or maybe the Chandra itself and whatever it is that
is holding our Universe is INSIDE A BLACK HOLE with
all kinds of other black holes criss-crossing like
the tendrils of a giant tree's root system. Wow....
what a visual!
Thanks so much for posting this, OP. REally very
exciting!

My understanding is that they take many, many 'pictures' and put them together to get a 'whole' picture. They definitely do not just take one picture and go with that.
