Re: BREAKING: Tesla Motors makes driving FREE
What they'd rather not tell you is that it can take 12 hours to charge the car as opposed to the 30 seconds it takes to refill a fuel tank.
Some electric cars have a quick-charge feature, but if it's used too much, the batteries will need to be replaced in as little as 5 years. The max you can get out of them is about 10 years. Since these batteries are more expensive than a conventional engine, these cars aren't exactly cost effective.
Even with free electricity.
 Quoting: -GooGooFlexy-

If you read the article it says a 150 mile charge should take 30 minutes. The battery part I agree with you on. The whole setup is overly expensive but just like every other technology it will get cheaper with more use. What if gasoline was $10-15 like it is overseas. Would it still be too expensive? What if there was no gasoline?

My point is that even though its not perfect it does present an alternative to our petroleum addiction.

Free by using "solar carports" to power fill stations. Then offering that energy FREE OF CHARGE to drivers of their cars. There are only 6 stations now but the plan is to expand to 100s stretching across the US on main thorough fairs.

This definitely could be a step in the right direction.

" Tesla Motors ( NASDAQ : TSLA ) today unveiled its highly anticipated Supercharger network. Constructed in secret, Tesla revealed the locations of the first six Supercharger stations, which will allow the Model S to travel long distances with ultra fast charging throughout California, parts of Nevada and Arizona.
The technology at the heart of the Supercharger was developed internally and leverages the economies of scale of existing charging technology already used by the Model S, enabling Tesla to create the Supercharger device at minimal cost. The electricity used by the Supercharger comes from a solar carport system provided by SolarCity, which results in almost zero marginal energy cost after installation. Combining these two factors, Tesla is able to provide Model S owners1 free long distance travel indefinitely."

$20,000 in 20 years. $1000 a year. Less than $100 a month. Most people spend at least $100 a month on gasoline.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 4677351

Exactly what I was about to say. At my last job I used to drive 25 miles each way. Which isn't that far. It ended up being about a tank of gas a week on average. So lets call that $50 a week. Do the math on that. $2600 a year. It adds up fast and I know there are plenty of people that drive more than I do.

People that are complaining about the cost of these cars are also forgetting an important fact. THEY ARE LUXURY CARS. They go fast and look nice. I don't hear anyone complaining about Mercedes or BMW costing $50,000 but if an electric car costs that much then it's the end of the world.

My BMW 3 series gives me about 500km per tank, which costs me $100 premium fuel to fill- yes CDN prices. I use that up in about 2 weeks just going to work and back. That's $2600/year or $52,000 in 20 years. Is gas cheap in PR?

Once again I agree with this point. 30 minutes is still a long time but you have to start somewhere. The great thing about technology is it advances exponentially. Next year it will take 20 minutes to charge. 5 years from now it will take 20 seconds.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7844770

Yeah, that would be the quick charge. You absolutely can't do that often if you want your battery to last any amount of time.

One other point to consider is the hippy, green-peace, save the ice caps nonsense.
No one ever stops to think where that electricity came from. Could be coal...nuclear energy...whatever. These things all cause some sort of pollution.
Then, there's the cost of manufacturing and shipping the complicated parts from the 4 corners of the earth because they must be manufactured by specialists who tend to be in different countries.
I read somewhere that the pollution caused from shipping the parts to build a Prius is more than a normal car would produce over its entire life.

It does make sense that electric cars are still being made even though they're horribly impractical. They aren't a threat to big oil's profits. They would NEVER let anyone get in the way of their profits. They've bought out or killed everyone who's stood in their way.

The sad truth is that we should be powering our cars of of water by now. But, with big oil in control, inventions like this will never see the light of day.

Aren't the batteries lithium ion now-a-days...and arent those batteries biodegradable?

SpookyWatcher
 Quoting: SpookyWatcher 23559912

I don't think the batteries are Bio-degradable but it doesn't matter since ONE crude oil Spill causes way more devastation does than batteries ever will.

the Good thing is that Lithium batteries last much longer and now the Quebec Canada also annouced a few years ago how it would be building MORE electrical Fill-up stations across Quebec for motorist to use while in the province. The Provinces wants to have 30% of all of all cars to be electric by 2015.

As more and more provinces and countries start following suite it won't be long before the Queens(Beatrix & Windsor) will no longer have total control of society through transportation costs.

although Quebec is spending all this money to convert stations, at the Western end of that province in the county of Pontiac,Quebec the local officials have BANNED solar panel use through out the entire county!..I wonder if it has anything to do with that part of Quebec being mostly English speaking?

A company that went bankrupt because of pure idiocy in financial matters, gets bailed out by the government, now they come up with this nonsense. Go ahead, go purchase your $100,000+ Tesla vehicle. It's not going to drop in price any time soon and it's still going to be shit. There's no such thing as zero marginal energy costs. Someone had to spend the money to install those solar charging stations and those things are not cheap. Tesla motors has already made it clear that their vehicle is a toy for the rich leftists subsidized by us tax payers.

Government hates LPG. They tax the shit out of it in Europe. It's also a less efficient fuel than petrol and thus you end up using more of it. But with all that, with all the super fuel efficient cars coming out, LPG will be an excellent alternative fuel for Europe if they kill all the taxes on it.

Meanwhile Detroit which tried to kill the electric car a decade ago is crumbling into dust. Do the math, if you commute a good distance and can use one of these stations, the car suddenly becomes hugely cheaper than driving a gasoline car. Cheap enough that its worth getting a model S in addition to keeping your old car for rare very long trips outside of convient charging.

First off, hybrid or not, you'll never pay the 'real' price of a car.

Secondly, you'll spend MORE than $20,000 in just 10 years, not even 20. So who will use $20,000 of fuel in 20 years? Most of us. Here's the math:

Filling once a week at $70 per fill (most people are paying around that or higher for a full tank) That's $280 a month, that's $3360 a year...
10 years = $33,600
20 = $67,200

Yeah, good luck with that...
Let me know when you find a civil liability insurance attorney willing to sign off on rolling Hindenbergs for the General Population.

20 Gallons of gasoline is much more explosive.

Absolutely. If a hydride tank is broken it burns like a sack of briquettes, try that with gasoline.

He is a fraud

At one point a fellow from the audience, who said he was a physicist, asked to examine the rotary device to check for any hidden source of energy, such as a battery, or wires to an electrical outlet. At that point, Mr. Newman lost his temper, and yelled at the man to leave the conference area. In fact, as I saw it, Newman did not even give the fellow enough time to leave, but assaulted him as he was on his way out.

If his device worked he wouldn't need a new battery. He could use an electrostatic storage device which is more efficient than a battery and demonstrate his machine by powering itself. That is the litmus test that all these fraudsters fail. Can it power itself? If it is over unity of course it can but since he can't it is bogus.
