This sinkhole business has had me concerned since we first started hearing about it. Now all these new updates and great posts from you guys, I'm almost certain something is going to go down at some point in time.

I'd definitely go with the natural gas coming up because of seismic activity, no doubt. There's just too much of it to be much else, methinks. Add into that the tremors, and now this "dense, unidentified" substance?

I really feel for you folks down there. Fucking local and federal gov't not doing shit but holding back vital info (you know they haven't released ALL they know). I hope it DOESN'T go, but godspeed to you down there if it does. Will definitely be keeping an eye on the story.

That is some serious ongoing activity alright....quite strong readings that would suggest whatever is failing is continuing to fail further OR there is something else going on underneath the whole area that has caused the catastrophic failure of the Cavern....
in some parts it looks just like volcanic tremors...but impossible to tell with RSAM/SSAM readings as well...I would be very interested to know the frequency and amplitude of the readings...

I thought that nuclear depositories were supposed to be in areas that are geologically stable, impermeable, non-corrosive, and dry. (Salt will make some transuranic materials water soluble.)

Something strikes me as not correct about having a nuclear repository in saltwater brine in the most unstable of geology.

Gee, Do you think someone goofed?

Add hollowed out salt domes in with the fracking and such, and the deep high-pressure gas deposits that were disturbed in the Gulf region have found a way to the surface via the path of least resistance.

The seismic activity is from the slow internal collapse of the cavern.

The roof is falling in.

On November 20, 1980, when the disaster took place, the Diamond Crystal Salt Company operated the Jefferson Island salt mine under the lake, while a Texaco oil rig drilled down from the surface of the lake searching for petroleum. Due to a miscalculation, the 14-inch (36 cm) drill bit entered the mine, starting a chain of events which turned what was at the time an almost 10-foot (3.0 m) deep freshwater lake into a salt water lake with a deep hole.

Bigger problems here than we know. There is volcanic activity under there of some kind. We probably wont see lava, but the whole thing may blow like Mt St Helens.

Lake Peigneur sank into the breached mine and sucked down up to 65 acres of the surrounding terrain.

Someone stored some anti-matter in the cavern and now it is going to eat the whole universe.

Someone should just evacuate the area, throw a match in there and get on with it.

I certainly think they should consider evacuating the surrounding area all the way round, at least 65 acres. An area in comparison is 65 Wembley football pitches. HUGE!

It's an unknown at the moment.
Residents and some officials continue fearing that Crosstex’s butane could cause an explosion. Gas is obviously escaping. The company, backed by DNR and the DEQ, says its cavern poses little to no threat to residents near the sinkhole...................
I say evacuate for at least 2 months while more tests are being carried out.

In this case I would exercise caution and put the people first here.

Maybe they found alot of nuclear waste that was not suppose to be there.

Maybe thats why they pulled the first drilling rig out, radioactivity........
