Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
The thing I hate is that people who went to college keep telling me I should go to college because I'm supposedly a genius (last IQ test said I was pretty average). These same people have thousands in debt and still can't hold a steady job. I think they just want me to be a debt slave too so they can feel better about their poor choices. I might not be a genius, but I know a bad investment when I see one.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
I am 20, and MOST of my graduating class is going to college.

When I was in school, I thought I would be a failure because I didn't want to go to college. (LOL)

Thats because every single stupid school PRAISES and ADORES and promotes the idea that "if you do not go to college, you will be a FAILURE the rest of your life working as a garbageman"

NO, here is the problem with all of that propaganda:

1.) in a bad economy, there are not enough high paying jobs for everyone. In fact, there are not enough high paying jobs for even 10% of everyone. There ALWAYS has to be 50 junky low paying jobs for every high paying one, because THE LOW PAYING ONES SUPPORT THAT 100$ PER HOUR JOB! You can't have a kingdom without serfs! That is why minimum wage has to be higher, because if nobody worked at McDonalds and everyone was a high paid "professional" there would be no economy or production.

2.) The percentages of people from my graduating class that are going to college is insane, almost everyone goes. Now, tell me how even half or even 25% of the kids in my school are going to get a high paying job? They simply WILL NOT. They will be paying off that degree for the rest of their life, if our currency holds up that long (it probably won't)

3.) No offense to anyone, but in order to benefit from that degree you have to be ABOVE AVERAGE intelligence AND ambitious. Most college kids are neither of those, and they simply scoot past classes and have sex and drink beer and act dumb like they will the rest of their lives.

4.) The courses at colleges are the absolute biggest piles of garbage I have ever seen in my life, almost worse than public school. You are paying over 100$ a day to stay at the school and go to these classes, and most of them are either someone rambling about a topic they are not a true expert in, or something retarded like Yoga or bowling. (no kidding, my friend said he took yoga and bowling classes for college credits.)

It is NOT what it used to be, stop believing the lies of college, the owners of the colleges are in it for the money and that is IT.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I was able to find (thank you God) a good job at a place that has plenty of opportunity and is paying 11.40 an hour right now, just got a 1$ raise recently after working there for 2 months. I work hard at what I have to do, I try to pay attention the best I can. The other kids my age there are generally lazy and don't try their best.

Most kids that go to college just want an easy pass to a high paying job, it does not and never will work that way.
 Quoting: ExpertOfSound

Very wise words.

You also write very well, especially for someone who is 20 years old.

It's almost funny that you are earning 25 grand a year while your classmates are going into debt up to 25 grand a year.

An expert being interviewed on the radio said that 40% or more of the students taking student loans don't graduate, so they are especially screwed.

Also a high number don't pay off the loan under the original terms. So the loan amount grows. The lenders encourage delays so they can earn a lot of extra revenue. They actually make more from the loan sabatacals (sp?) than they do from the original loans.

If you're considering a skilled trade take a look at the nearest JATC (Joint Apprentice Training Committee) affiliated with the IBEW. We pay for your training and you earn while you learn, apprentices go to school for a week once every six weeks.

Here is a link to our local JATC just to give you an idea of the program, my son is going to be 15 in a week and I've already told him if he wants in and is willing to work hard he can be making over 60k by the time he is 23 with good benefits.

So being an electrician doesn't sound good OP? I must admit it's been great to me, after the 2008 crash was the only time in my 29 years (since I was 18) that I had to sit at home for 6 months.

Also our retirement is not bad, it's basically set up to pay you the same as you would be getting if you were still working until you die.

You're naive. I pursued my passion and found it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I run a small business now, that is workaday and I raise cows.

I'm happy. Oh, and now, I'm learning to be machinist. Side note, I hold a degree in chemistry and am really close to an engineering graduate degree.

I paid for it, so save the jeers.

My daughter is going to get a Bachelors degree online at Univ of MD University College.

THIS IS NOT A SCAM! IT'S PART OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND SYSTEM AND THAT'S WHAT HER DEGREE WILL SHOW!

TOTAL COST FOR FOUR, YES, FOUR YEARS? $20,000.00

THAT'S IT!

And she is working part time at her favorite music store as well.

PEOPLE WHO TAKE OUT LOANS AND PAY $140,000 for four years are INSANE!

If you or mommy and daddy have that kind of money laying around go ahead and drink and frat it up and go for four years.

But for the 95% of us that need loans to pay for college, THERE ARE ALTERNATIVES OUT THERE!! GO FIND THEM!

COLLEGE IS NOT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY! DOING IT THE WRONG WAY IS!

Do you have a community college in your area?... It's only a couple hundred dollars to take two or three classes & they offer grants (you don't have to take out loans)...

If you get decent grades, you should be able to transfer to a state university. All of your credits should transfer, so you may only need to pay university costs for the final two years of school. I have both my degrees from large state universities. You end up with a great network of professional contacts just from the people you went to school with...

I work with some really amazing recent graduates who worked their way through school (usually with accounting jobs since we're all CPAs). In most cases, they began in community college and then transferred to a university....They don't have that much debt....

I just wouldn't want to see you give up before you've even started....

I graduated in 2009, still working as a security guard. I just gave up applying. If I knew back then what I know now, I would've just learned a trade. I have a liberal arts degree, no real skills. I was able to work full time during school so at least I don't have any debt. I'm a terrible interviewer in general so that doesn't help either.

It is true, if you work at even Mcdonalds for 5 years making 16k a year, that is 80k$ that you now have to make a down payment on a house and buy a decent car and still have left overs. Shooting for that 100$ per hour job and lavish lifestyle just isn't realistic at all anymore.
 Quoting: ExpertOfSound

And many times that 100 per hour gets eaten up by the cars, homes, clothes etc you have to have to keep up appearances. Plus many are working 80+ hours a week. Many times there is no quality of life or little time to really relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Executives are known to retire and in a few years they die of a heart attack, cancer, etc. That is because they were so wound up for many decades that their body doesn't know how to relax. So they die instead.

If you go to college right after high school, absolutely its a waste of time & money!! Most kids change their majors several times before graduating. Those who go to a 4 year college spend the first 2 years taking core classes before spending their last 2 years taking the classes for their degrees.

Go to work for a few years, save your money & then start taking classes. If you have to take out a loan to go to school, you can't afford to go. I'm in my 3rd year at a community college (2 classes per semester), I have a full ride & a GPA of 3.81.

I've told both of my kids, do NOT take out student loans, there is no guarantee of a job after school & so far my son has held to that & my daughter plans on doing that also.
 Quoting: mopar28m

I have told my kids the same thing. Wait for a while and work. I told them if they want to be a doctor/nurse get a job or even volunteer in a hospital to see if that is really what you want to do. Want to be a vet? Work as an assistant for a while. A lawyer? Get a quick degree as a paralegal. Working along side a profession you think you would like helps to get the low down from people who are actually working in that profession. It will save time, money and heartache in the long run.

So many times people get a degree only to find out that they really hate what they are doing. I was going to be a medical technologist so I went in a worked as a lab assistant. Found out that the job was not the right fit for me and went to do something else before spending all that time and money getting a degree I wouldn't have regretted.

Nice! I actually think it's better when you're older. I had no real clue what I wanted to do when I was 18, so I ended up not finishing school the first time. A few years later, I figured it out and basically did what you're doing. At 18 I am not sure I would have taken my classes so seriously, I would have just gotten through them. Since I knew what I wanted to do and I knew I would have to pay the money back myself, I was very serious about school the second time. I graduated 2 years ago with multiple offers. I started at 65k and within a year got a very nice raise. I was scared to leave what I was comfortable at and go back, but it was so worth it.

I went to college for mechanical engineering.
Came out making $17.50. Got into a consulting for government gig making $42/hour.

I worked my summers framing houses, so I had no debt coming out.

I own a duplex and am quite happy.

College is a foot in the door, and after that you have to steer your ship to a good career, and believe me, the good ones don't advertise.

If I had to do it over again, I would have gotten into a trade.

I would agree that 75% of college is a waste. Those gender studies and liberal art degree's won't pay the bills. Those are upper middle class white girls courses, sort of a time filler while they experiment with drugs and promiscuity.

Yeah, College is not what its cracked up to be, I got kicked out of High school in my first yeah, the whole family said I had ruiend my future.

Now I am a software developer (self taught) and earn the most out of the whole family, including my sister who is basicly a genius with muti degrees in molecular biology and stuff, she can't even get a job because she thinks because she went to university she should automaticly get paid top dollar.

If you simply want to learn stuff University id all good, if you EXPECT to get a job just because you went, well tough luck.
