Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
I'd change the subject of the post to "College is a HUGELY ENTERTAINING AND AWESOME waste of time and money", but I get your point. Seriously, though, if you don't spend at least 75% of your waking hours in college socializing/partying, then you're doing it all wrong.

People ought to have a good idea of what they like doing before they go into a lifetime of debt to be "educated" in it and praying for a job that's related to it in any way.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
I am 20, and MOST of my graduating class is going to college.

When I was in school, I thought I would be a failure because I didn't want to go to college. (LOL)

Thats because every single stupid school PRAISES and ADORES and promotes the idea that "if you do not go to college, you will be a FAILURE the rest of your life working as a garbageman"

NO, here is the problem with all of that propaganda:

1.) in a bad economy, there are not enough high paying jobs for everyone. In fact, there are not enough high paying jobs for even 10% of everyone. There ALWAYS has to be 50 junky low paying jobs for every high paying one, because THE LOW PAYING ONES SUPPORT THAT 100$ PER HOUR JOB! You can't have a kingdom without serfs! That is why minimum wage has to be higher, because if nobody worked at McDonalds and everyone was a high paid "professional" there would be no economy or production.

2.) The percentages of people from my graduating class that are going to college is insane, almost everyone goes. Now, tell me how even half or even 25% of the kids in my school are going to get a high paying job? They simply WILL NOT. They will be paying off that degree for the rest of their life, if our currency holds up that long (it probably won't)

3.) No offense to anyone, but in order to benefit from that degree you have to be ABOVE AVERAGE intelligence AND ambitious. Most college kids are neither of those, and they simply scoot past classes and have sex and drink beer and act dumb like they will the rest of their lives.

4.) The courses at colleges are the absolute biggest piles of garbage I have ever seen in my life, almost worse than public school. You are paying over 100$ a day to stay at the school and go to these classes, and most of them are either someone rambling about a topic they are not a true expert in, or something retarded like Yoga or bowling. (no kidding, my friend said he took yoga and bowling classes for college credits.)

It is NOT what it used to be, stop believing the lies of college, the owners of the colleges are in it for the money and that is IT.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I was able to find (thank you God) a good job at a place that has plenty of opportunity and is paying 11.40 an hour right now, just got a 1$ raise recently after working there for 2 months. I work hard at what I have to do, I try to pay attention the best I can. The other kids my age there are generally lazy and don't try their best.

Most kids that go to college just want an easy pass to a high paying job, it does not and never will work that way.

Im 18 and just quit college after about 2 months of being there. Im not going to lie i loved it. But at the same time ive been developing spiritually since halfway through my senior year, college wasnt for me. I was so ready to go. I wanted to know more but at the same time, it was so easy it was dumbing me. Yes, obviously i would have learned more but i wasnt being taught, i was being taught AT. I didnt learn anything other than binary. Then i asked myself if i would really be able to pay for it and what do i really want to do...so i just stopped going. I dont feel its worth it. I want to further my studies in the spirit and meditation. So far, the best teacher i have is myself. I realize i dont need anyone to accomplish a goal. No wonder i hated high school so much. Fucking mind warping society. The world is amusing to me now and it seems like im maturing faster than everyone else around me (not being conceited) but everyone is just hidden and manipulated like puppets. Even my mom. But hey we can only help the ones who want help right? Yet im the one whos a dumb kid.... ha!

I can tell you right now, my engineering degree is 100% unused for me, no one asks me for it, no one cares. All the projects I do, nobody even bothers to check. I started my own business and wished I started it when I was much younger. I learned that I had absolutely no need to prove anything to these bureaucrats. Most of my time in class were pretty pointless and I've learned nothing new that I didn't already know.

Meanwhile, I make more money than all my friends who have graduated their university, most of them are all in heavy debt except for one, who started his own business and who is a highschool drop out, running a huge CNC shop. Who's the smarter one here?

24 and I wish I could afford to go to college! Glad I didn't go at 18 though- had no idea then what I wanted.. probably would have debt and no useful degree (I wanted to do english). Now I know for sure. I work in manufacturing as an equipment programmer but my pay is much lower than others with degrees.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1144007

It sounds like you're under valuing yourself. There aren't many PLC programmers in the industry that can do good and if you know how to do it, believe me, you can be payed a lot more than those with degrees.

College is good for highly technical careers, you know, like surgeons, or chemical engineers, stuff like that.

Beyond those sort of careers, you're right, it's a gigantic waste.

What about this. Every damn time I apply for a job, they tell me that an associate's degree is not good enough. They want a bachelor's degree or higher. And these are NOT high paying jobs. The thing is, I know, tons of people with higher degrees that can't find decent jobs. So What the hell do these greedy Ass F#$% employers want, F@#$ Slaves?!!!!!!!!

You don't need a college degree or a loan to be an entrepreneur at any age. I have a college degree but truly believe it was a waste of money. Once I left the corporate world that I was programmed to work in via college, my income tripled as an entrepreneur and I never looked back.

i don't know. it taught me organic chemistry.

and i can pick up a job doing chemistry almost anywhere.

without a college degree and the laboratory skills associated, i could be cooking meth i suppose.

but i'd rather not be.

Hahaha...have fun with that. I'm a chem dropout and make $26/hr doing computer shit I lied I could do. But I can.

I had a night school professor that encouraged us learning what we had and lying to employers and learning on the job. FTW. I was inspecting foreclosed homes before I started lying. Epic WIN.

Computer jobs are so full of complete theoretic dipshits that are so overqualified that they over complicate the simplest of algorithms. This is the failure of schools. I have been a mechanic @ 2 garages, inspected and secured foreclosures, and started out as a high school student working in a farm store. The only thing lacking here is reality. If you are smart enough you can con your way into anything.

The whole college is a scam meme is meant to disuade people from going to school to take them out of competition, end of story. TPTB wouldn't want an entirely educated population. The internet is flowing with this same kind of talk, same kind of doom and gloom. Yes, you can get in over your head in debt. Yes, you could waste alot of time and find out that you do not want to do what you thought you wanted to do. Other replies have pointed out you get what you put into it. I personally knew much of what I studied before I even took a class. I was there for the good guy badge. Classes that didn't "really" matter took second place to partying and trying to get laid. I learned alot about life during my college experience, worth much more than I paid. The experience is not for everyone, but nobody needs to go into $100,000 debt either. The communal, collabrative environment is crucial to building good people skills, especially around competitive and motivated people. I do wish that all this college bullshit would go away. The most powerful teacher any man has is himself. I've taught myself most everything I'm good at and happily learn something new every day. College is not totally bad :)

I'm an electrical engineer.. my degree was only 5 years and paid off handsomely. It is still that way because it is difficult; you must master advanced mathematics, physics, problem solving, and business skills. If you can hack it it is a great option and you will never be unemployed if you're competent and well-mannered and presentable.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
It should be mandatory for every student to graduate high school to read and take a course on one very important book. That book is "The Law of Success" from the 1925 manuscript lessons of Napoleon Hill. Later the original was manuscript was changed to "Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill.

This subject is by far the most important creator of life enhancing material anyone can learn and put into effect for mankind.

If these lessons were incorperated into today's society we would all be so rich and successful.

Today's colleges lack one very important subject and that is what is the one secret to all successful individuals. Most people have no clue and that is very sad very sad?

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
Do not go to college straight away. Take a placement test at a community college first to see where you stand and finish the core classes there while taking a part time job. This will take you a year and a half or two semesters and a summer like I did. Prior to this I worked two jobs to save up for classes and books and signed up for the Pell Grant (no student loans for me) and this is how I got my gen. requirements for a B.A. in anything down.

I didn't know which field I wanted to study but I've been crazy about film and acting for the longest time so I went that route. About halfway into getting my B.A. in that I stopped because the chances of succeeding are slim especially in Hawaii. Now I'm in the medical field hoping to get accepted into my program and hopefully in less than four years I'll have my B.A coupled with on the job training.

Frankly, unless you're going to study something like medicine, engineering or architecture, you're not going to be making the big bucks. Even law isn't that great at the moment. Lots of recent graduate lawyers out there who can't finds jobs. College for everyone is a joke.

Architecture probably has the highest unemployment rate.

Look I am a college student and I pretty much agree with you 100%, with that being said, college is one of the best experiences to have and don't waste that opportunity. And if shit's suppose to hit the fan soon then why not. 90% of students here don't do shit but party every night and classes in the day. Don't get me wrong that's what I do but I have a full time job
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12673272

So I can do all that stuff in clubs for free? So you're saying that people should shell out 40-100k in fees just so they can party every night? Seems like a lousy idea.

Think of it in the way you think of country club annual membership fees. They're insane, but they let you hang out full time with a group of fantastically like minded people enjoying their time together.

Sounds like a lousy country club. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy making more money than you ever did and actually going to real country clubs with like minded business people to make proper business deals.

Like it or not, a college degree increases your odds of getting a higher paying job.

Just as a trade qualification (electrician, mechanic, etc) increases your odds of getting a job in that trade.

Hard work (and study) does pay off. What's more, a positive can-do attitude says a lot to an employer about a prospective employee.

You're comparing University from Europe to the US, two completely different schools of thought. I went to complete my university degree in electrical engineering in France, the two schools of teaching are completely alien to each other from the US (The US being much more dumber). Economics and costs in design was always the prime subject, which the US schools have completely lost. US students come out of school with no business skills or any business sense.

However, I still have never even shown anyone my degree in my business, no one really cares as long as the job gets done. I never bothered with employment with anyone, as after school, I opened up shop and started from there.

You don't need a college degree or a loan to be an entrepreneur at any age. I have a college degree but truly believe it was a waste of money. Once I left the corporate world that I was programmed to work in via college, my income tripled as an entrepreneur and I never looked back.
