If you're considering a skilled trade take a look at the nearest JATC (Joint Apprentice Training Committee) affiliated with the IBEW. We pay for your training and you earn while you learn, apprentices go to school for a week once every six weeks.

Here is a link to our local JATC just to give you an idea of the program, my son is going to be 15 in a week and I've already told him if he wants in and is willing to work hard he can be making over 60k by the time he is 23 with good benefits.

college is what YOU make of it. Just like life. If you dont put any effort into it and sit there and drink beer, have sex, and smoke weed then yea college is nothing but another high school experience that you can ramble on about for the rest of your life. Im getting a degree in psychology and tell ya what, i always find people hiring at job fairs and every time i look online for jobs that will pay for graduate school guess what! there are jobs that pay for it- while paying you! '

i went to community college for two years, spent right about 12 grand and for my 2 years at a university i will spend about 20 grand... 32 grand for a extra 1 million in my lifetime? ill take that.

again, college is what you make of it.

High school and college are for the sheeple that believe in demonacracy. They push zionist propaganda down your throats and brainwash you that Hard Work Will Set You Free a term the Nazis coined.

Mostly a waste of time, I agree.

Agreed. Those who just cruise through and don't exemplify themselves aren't nearly as likely to turn it into a successful venture. This is a reflection of both the fact that employers want stand outs and the fact that those who stand out are likely to be the ones to strive for success afterwards.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
I went back to school at 22, 3.5 years later degree with a 3.85 GPA in IT.. got out in 1996 (and only owed $1,800) hired out of school at $35k, changed jobs in 8 months for 46k, at 12 months, got an offer for $65k and made my employer match it.at 18 months, I was an independent contractor at $55 an hour, then 2 years out of school I landed a local contract for $165 an hour cause I had skills in a certain software package over the previous year that was very rare.. that contract lasted 28 months until late 2000. Did a 3 months contract after that, then went back as a full time employee at $85k a year cause of the tech crash. That job lasted 2 years, then was unemployed for about 4.5 months.. that sucked.. landed my current job where I work now for over 9 years.. working at home..

I pity kids getting out of school now.. I feel sorry for my kids. I have had a great ride.

Yea it sounds like it :D

That is the idea though, in 1996 there were jobs like that, where if you worked well and hard and learned all you could you would be well off.

Yep, but how many jobs being an x-ray technician are there?

Try to figure out how many jobs there are currently, and how many people want the job... the numbers are always bad.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
I am 20, and MOST of my graduating class is going to college.

When I was in school, I thought I would be a failure because I didn't want to go to college. (LOL)

Thats because every single stupid school PRAISES and ADORES and promotes the idea that "if you do not go to college, you will be a FAILURE the rest of your life working as a garbageman"

NO, here is the problem with all of that propaganda:

1.) in a bad economy, there are not enough high paying jobs for everyone. In fact, there are not enough high paying jobs for even 10% of everyone. There ALWAYS has to be 50 junky low paying jobs for every high paying one, because THE LOW PAYING ONES SUPPORT THAT 100$ PER HOUR JOB! You can't have a kingdom without serfs! That is why minimum wage has to be higher, because if nobody worked at McDonalds and everyone was a high paid "professional" there would be no economy or production.

2.) The percentages of people from my graduating class that are going to college is insane, almost everyone goes. Now, tell me how even half or even 25% of the kids in my school are going to get a high paying job? They simply WILL NOT. They will be paying off that degree for the rest of their life, if our currency holds up that long (it probably won't)

3.) No offense to anyone, but in order to benefit from that degree you have to be ABOVE AVERAGE intelligence AND ambitious. Most college kids are neither of those, and they simply scoot past classes and have sex and drink beer and act dumb like they will the rest of their lives.

4.) The courses at colleges are the absolute biggest piles of garbage I have ever seen in my life, almost worse than public school. You are paying over 100$ a day to stay at the school and go to these classes, and most of them are either someone rambling about a topic they are not a true expert in, or something retarded like Yoga or bowling. (no kidding, my friend said he took yoga and bowling classes for college credits.)

It is NOT what it used to be, stop believing the lies of college, the owners of the colleges are in it for the money and that is IT.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, I was able to find (thank you God) a good job at a place that has plenty of opportunity and is paying 11.40 an hour right now, just got a 1$ raise recently after working there for 2 months. I work hard at what I have to do, I try to pay attention the best I can. The other kids my age there are generally lazy and don't try their best.

Most kids that go to college just want an easy pass to a high paying job, it does not and never will work that way.
 Quoting: ExpertOfSound

Well, I can't speak for everyone but with the economy the way it is, my employer will only hire educated staff because so many are available. So, being educated might not get you a high paying job but you will have a job.

My youngest is in her first year of college. She is majoring in Accounting, with a minor in Business, and also will have an Associates Degree in Organizational Management when she gradutes in 2016. Her boyfriend is taking the same classes. They plan to work for at least a year with an Accounting Firm, and then create their own. Their goal, besides to eventually get married, is to own their own business, be their own boss.
In the meantime, besides going to college full time, my daughter works part time at a seasonal job, and her boyfriend works full time. They are both very ambitious, and real go-getters. She graduated 1st in her class with a GPA of 4.49 and he graduated 5th in the class with a GPA of 4.34.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
College is DEFINITELY over priced. No doubt about that but it can easily pay off if you are wise about your decision.

My wife became a dental hygienist and starting made $34-36 and hour. She graduated last year and we will have her loans paid off by middle of next year.

I have not graduated by am working on it and am focusing on accounting/economics. When I perform contract work I make 29/hr.

I agree that IF you go to college don't do something "that you love"! I hate that BS! Do something that will make you enough money so in your free time you can do what you love! If you love bookkeeping and you can make good money doing it then great!

The key really is something very specific or a type of licensing. RDH, RN, CPA, CFP, MD and so forth.

I also would state that many people could become professionals in the above listed professions with never stepping one foot inside a school. This isn't how the elite set it up.

Very wise, OP. College is really only worthwhile in the hard sciences. Liberal arts? Forget it, what you have is very expensive birdcage liner that will keep you in debt for the rest of your life.

Learning a trade is what I recommend. It's useful because people will always need things built/repaired.

I have a high school diploma. I studied on my own and took the certification exam in my field, and I have a good job with good bennies that I find easy to do with no student loan debt to drag me down. It leaves me enough time and money to pursue the things I love to do after the bills are paid.

Going to college is supposed to be an investment in your future career that you expect to have a good payoff. It's not something you do just because everybody seems to be doing it or because you think minority/women's studies are empowering, or whatever. People need to look at exactly what sort of career they intend to pursue and research whether the average salary for it makes it a worthwhile investment, what the chances are of landing a job in that field and what kind of competition they can expect to face vs. the costs of tuition, books, etc. and what kind of monthly loan payments they would have.

Unless your a natural programmer or such, I wouldn't take out a student loan. Pay as u go if your going.

I was talking to a guy at the range. He gets paid to go to college. He chose to go to a local state school and has money left over from all the aid he gets. He was telling me he has friends who have piled up more than $100,000 in student loans. At a time when the economy is teetering on the brink....

I've passed 6 microsoft and 2 comptia exams with computer based study. You don't need an instructor for that stuff. If I were younger I'd teach myself a foreign language using a computer based program.

Re: College is a HUGE waste of time and money.
20 yrs. old here too. I've had it. I'm going to learn how to do things, not get a degree. I'm going to try to start my own small business in artsy stuff- I make jewelry, dream catchers, paint, amateur photographer. Learning how to make lotions, soaps, face wash, etc... where I'm moving to people love home made stuff like that. I wanted to get a degree in art since that's the only thing I'm good at..and video games. But my requirements asked for a mother fucking speech class- two terms of it too. Wanted me to take a physical class, about 8 credits worth, except each phy. class was only 2 credits (><)! I had to go up Calculus in math, become a professional writer, study science. All for art. What the fuck? I was blown away by all that shit. I wanted to learn art, not become a jack of trades in the college world. So I am going back. But not a for a degree. I'm just going to learn what I need to in terms of jewelry making and painting, since those are the two areas that I actually need a teacher. And the rest I will learn on my own. High school is when you take classes that you hate, not college. Pissed me off, the entire time I was in high school they told me that would only need the basics of the classes like math and writing. Nope I had to go all the way in both of those if I wanted a degree. This is at a community college mind you. I'd hate to see the requirements at a 4 yr college. Oh and I forgot to mention that these requirements for art majors getting their degree. Art majors doing anything higher than basic algebra, ha! Setting up us for fail right there.
And it's ironic too
'Cause what we tend to do
Is act on what they say
And then it is that way~Jem.

FYI, they didn't have to pay for their college. My daughters boyfriend got scholarships to cover tuition and some other expenses. His full time job is paying for all other costs. My daughter got the Chancellors Scholarship, which covers books, fee's, tuition, and 1/2 the dorm. Her other scholarships and a grant pay the rest of her dorm, and she has several thousand every year for living expenses.
Both of them will graduate with no debt. The college they are attending was their 2nd choice. They each wanted to go to a differant college for their first choice, but it would have required getting a loan for some of the expenses. They both chose not to do that, instead focusing on their education without an albatross slung over their necks. They also altered their original majors, to be more practical as to the available and future openings in the business world.

I fell for the college delusion. I'm in so much debt that there is no way out.

If I had gone to work full time at a chain restaurant when I was 18, by now, I could be a GM or a regional manager or a corporate trainer or manager, making more money than I could with a degree now, and no soul crushing student debts.

College degrees are ONLY valuable when few have them. Having a college degree back in the 1950's or before was a ticket to the upper middle class, now its just another HS diploma, fuck, its way more worthless and dangerous to obtain than an HS diploma. At least an HS diploma doesn't mean the millstone that is around my neck and the necks of others.

Our system of degrees for jobs is seriously fucked up. I can't believe we haven't seen a debt revolt from all the fucks like me who got in over their heads. We should just all default anyway, bring it all crashing down. Maybe afterwards things would make sense again.

The thing I hate is that people who went to college keep telling me I should go to college because I'm supposedly a genius (last IQ test said I was pretty average). These same people have thousands in debt and still can't hold a steady job. I think they just want me to be a debt slave too so they can feel better about their poor choices. I might not be a genius, but I know a bad investment when I see one.
