If there is trouble, it could mean Cyrus will have to be quarantined for 10 days. Being he is a working dog this will not be fun for either of us. :( Please wish us luck. Helpful article! Ty Tex! I've taken in lots of strays over the years and almost all of them have been healthy, but underfed. If it's eyes and nose are clear, chances are pretty good. Can you isolate the kitten from the dog until you can get to the vet? That's what I do, when I get a new one. |

A neighbor & I brought it some food & put it where we found it. Was pretty dark, but it's eyes did look clear....well groomed too. If it is a kill shelter, kitty won't have a chance. Never call animal control..either take to a non-kill animal shelter or find it a home on your own..possibly put up posters, it may just be lost. |
Nine's User ID: 23438707 United States 09/26/2012 12:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Nothing in your post sounds like rabies with the kitten and Cyrus probably has his rabies shot. If the kitten didn't bite or get saliva in an open wound on Cyrus, even if it did have rabies, Cyrus shouldn't be affected. Try to not worry because dogs pick up on your worry and Cyrus might start reacting to your worry and make you even more concerned. Hope you'll soon let us know everything is ok. |

January Wolves User ID: 24376489 United States 09/26/2012 01:16 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | If it looks well fed and cared for why do you think it is a stray? How old does it look? If over 6 months it might be able to find its way back home. If it doesn't appear sickly at all it probably does not have rabies. It would also not be drinking water. It would also probably be acting aggressive. I don't understand why you would think it would have rabies? WTH??? You got upset just because it rubbed up against your dog? It doesn't sound like it has any signs of rabies and I have seen many rabid animals - usually skunks in this area (about 5 % of them). I used to be an animal control officer. It's well-fed looking, well-cared for looking, eating, drinking water, not aggressive. So why the hell do you think it has rabies??? Any mammal can catch rabies but even in wildlife the percentage is low. Instead of calling animal control it would have been better to put found ad in newspaper (usually free) & some flyers up. The cat may even live somewhere on your block. Most animal control shelters only hold stray cats for 72 hours and then can put them down which they usually do if they are crowded. Cat owners don't always come looking for the cat right away since cats wander & then come home again. So if an owner doesn't come to claim it it could be dead in 72 hours. It might have been better to call an animal save group instead. Many of these groups would be able to discern if it displays rabies symptoms which it doesn't sound like it does! You may have just given it its death sentence just because it rubbed up against your dog! Well, there may be a cat owner out there who loves their cat just as much as you do your dog. Sorry, I know I'm being tough on you but it struck a chord with me! When I was an ACO I just got sick of people bringing in animals for stupid reasons and then we'd end up having the kennel workers putting them down to make space for the hoards we were bombarded with every day! Doesn't sound like it has rabies from what you have said! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 17544734 United States 09/26/2012 01:22 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Rabies in domestic animals is not that common, especially a well-groomed kitten without symptoms. If you see a raccoon staggering around at 3 in the afternoon drooling, that would be a more likely candidate. |

Doesn't sound like it has rabies from what you have said! People who depend on service dogs often put their lives in the care of their animals. A threat to the animal is a threat to the humans very existence. Everyone loves their dogs. A service dog or working dog adds a new layer to that love. Sometimes only understood by someone who has owned or known one. Understand where you're coming from too. Tough, and often heartbreaking job you had. Make sure kitty has food and wait to see if it can get home. If it were a stray, it would be very mistrustful and thin. It wouldn't be rubbing up on you. I know, I have taken in several of them to be re-homed and they are always scared and hungry. |

Was meowing and friendly. Looked well fed, but lost. Even followed me. Began rubbing up against my feet and weaving between Cy's legs. Quoting: Jool I intend to call animal control first thing tomorrow. Also, I'd been hearing it cry/meow periodically the last 2 days. Finally it approached me. Helpful input would be great.... Also I'll be calling my vet ASAP. Thanks fellow GLPers! Sounds rabid. I wouldn't wait for animal control. It must be dispatched immediately. Could be carrying the plague as well |

It was nearly 11 at night when i found it, well it found me really. Also, I did not assume it was sick....I was merely seeking input. I also read that kittens, stray or lost will be friendly because they are vulnerable. And a neighbor and I fed it. I appreciate your input and passion for animals, by the way.
