Message Subject How do you change an intrusive thought?

I get this topic. Naysayers fuck off. Unless you've experienced this you can't possibly understand.

Some seriously horrid mad shit has gone through my mind over the years, sometimes I wonder how I've remained sane. I never get compulsions to do bad stuff, but bad stuff gets stuck in my head.

Imagine for a second you're watching the news and you hear about some bad shit that just happened. Now imagine if you had the type of OCD that got those mental images/actions stuck in your head. Now imagine if YOU COULDN'T GET RID OFF THEM. That the more you fight them, the more anxious you get and the further they get embedded. Also, imagine that stuff gets twisted around and the bad stuff gets switched to from your perspective as if you'd done them, because your anxiety and emotions are so fucking high that you may as well had done something bad because that's how bad you feel. Now imagine if this happened for virtually every single horrid thing you ever witness, be it real life, TV, something COMPLETELY FICTIONAL. Then imagine it happens so often your brain gets wired to think in this action, often resulting in bad shit in your head out of nowhere. Unable to ever truly relax because you're under constant mental assault, never having a moments break at all. Imagine if you were afraid all the time, anxious all the time, and things just got worse, eventually because this was on your mind all day, it would even intrude on your sleep in your dreams.

Now imagine that you're the kindest, gentlest soul you know, but still had to put up with this mad shit endlessly everyday for years upon years.

And that's only half of it. Because that type of OCD often results in obsessive compulsive routines, such as washing hands repeatedly, checking doors, counting, ENDLESS FUCKING COUNTING IN YOUR HEAD, your OCD assigning pointless meanings (usually the bad intrusive thoughts) to numbers and actions that you know aren't true, but you have no choice to perform them because not performing them feels worse.

Can't imagine that? GOOD. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Hi - I came by this thread after starting one on my own difficulty with a similar issue; Thread: I might be having a minor to severe OCD problem and would appreciate some advice...

I was just wondering, did you ever overcome all of these without medication -- or did it take medication to help you, and how effective was it? Are you better now?

Your description is essentially what I have been experiencing for about 9 mths with little relief, and I haven't gone on medication yet. I don't have any outward rituals, just an intrusive thought but I spend so much time ruminating on it. I'd appreciate any advice - thank you.
