It felt like inhaling a plastic sheet. All of a sudden my lungs had no traction, no air, could barely breathe. I ran out of there so fast I have no memory of it. At the hospital 15 minutes later my heart rate was over 182. It stayed up for a while, but I was fine a few hours later. The staff had never heard of methane from unused toilets, but apparently it does collect in the pipes sometimes. The treatment was supportive - they had to figure out just what it was, and by then my body was handling it. Bad scene. I'm sure you know this.. but for those who don't.. The modern toilet is designed to block sewer gases by trapping water in the turn built into the toilet. If there is no water in the toilet.. it doesn't block the sewer gases. The P trap under the sink does the same. Really, thanks for the info, WB! I would give you karma if I understood the darn system. Maybe plumbing should have some kind of valve to shut if the pipes are going to be dry for any length of time. Liberalism is totalitarianism with a human face – Thomas Sowell |

Might be a business opportunity in the idea. Automatic water-activated valve. No water.. valve closes. |

For those who don't, or haven't seen it, RadChick put together an amazing show covering this problem. It's an hour long, but very much worth the time to listen. If this is a double post in this thread, my apologies- if not, take some time to listen please. [link to www.youtube.com] Part 2 is airing today. |
