The Starbuckian User ID: 1577556 Puerto Rico 10/05/2012 08:42 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Information about methane: I once got a noseful of it Quoting: beeches and it really is odorless - from a clean but unused toilet I was trying to unplug. It felt like inhaling a plastic sheet. All of a sudden my lungs had no traction, no air, could barely breathe. I ran out of there so fast I have no memory of it. At the hospital 15 minutes later my heart rate was over 182. It stayed up for a while, but I was fine a few hours later. The staff had never heard of methane from unused toilets, but apparently it does collect in the pipes sometimes. The treatment was supportive - they had to figure out just what it was, and by then my body was handling it. Bad scene. I'm sure you know this.. but for those who don't.. The modern toilet is designed to block sewer gases by trapping water in the turn built into the toilet. If there is no water in the toilet.. it doesn't block the sewer gases. The P trap under the sink does the same. Really, thanks for the info, WB! I would give you karma if I understood the darn system. Maybe plumbing should have some kind of valve to shut if the pipes are going to be dry for any length of time. That isn't a bad idea. I know of no codes that require it.. maybe they should. Might be a business opportunity in the idea. Automatic water-activated valve. No water.. valve closes. What about a water balloon in the bowl, big enough to seal the trap? “Queen Sarah, save us from the Black Dog King!” - from the play, Dissocia [link to tasaonline.org.au (secure)] "Never be anyone's French poodle." - Mr Hamilton |

Due to a miscalculation, the 14-inch (36 cm) drill bit entered the mine, starting a remarkable chain of events which at the time turned an almost 10-foot (3.0 m) deep freshwater lake into a salt water lake with a deep hole. Anyone with common sense would be getting the hell out of that area. But at the same time, it's difficult to do when the current state of the world forces you to remain. You can't just take a family of 4 out of state, quit your hard-to-find job, and drive to who-knows-where that may be safe, with limited amounts of supplies just "on a hunch." Sadly, that's what they SHOULD be doing. They're waiting around for someone to say "the sinkhole may or may not explode at 2:30 on Friday." This thing is not the New Year's Eve ball counting down in New York. There won't be any warning. THIS IS THE WARNING! They need to go NOW. Prayers to all who remain. Here ? Is is the west braking off of this "hondsrug" mountain this city sits on ? In the Atlantic ? |

Smith Date: Oct. 8, 2012 Local officials have told the Advocate they’re very concerned that the odorless and colorless gas is accumulating to the point where it could burst through the ground with explosive force [...] This alarming news comes amid news reports that tremors are now being felt in a wide area across the bayou. This happened late last week, roughly 45 miles from Bayou Corne [...] This is an incredibly dangerous situation in the Louisiana bayou. [...] In Bayou Corne, workers began this weekend drilling three vent wells. This may eventually relieve some of the pressure — but the mental pressure and anguish for those who own homes in the community must be hard to take. It didn’t have to be this way. State and Texas Brine officials knew about potential problems at the dome more than a year and a half ago, and the state Department of Environmental Quality was painfully slow to respond to the first reports of tremors and bubbling gases this summer. Let’s pray that the efforts to reduce the pressure are not too little — or too late. [link to enenews.com] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 25202774 United States 10/08/2012 07:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The boiling point of methane is -162.0° C (-259.6° F) It is lighter than air, having a specific gravity of 0.554 Methane reacts with steam at high temperatures to yield carbon monoxide and hydrogen MSDS Methane gases [link to avogadro.chem.iastate.edu] Methane is the simplest member of the paraffin series of hydrocarbons. Its chemical formula is CH4. It is lighter than air, having a specific gravity of 0.554. It is only slightly soluble in water. It burns readily in air, forming carbon dioxide and water vapour; the flame is pale, slightly luminous, and very hot. The boiling point of methane is -162.0° C (-259.6° F) and the melting point is -182.5° C (-296.5° F). Methane in general is very stable, but mixtures of methane and air, with the methane content between 5 and 14 percent by volume, are explosive. Explosions of such mixtures have been frequent in coal mines and collieries and have been the cause of many mine disasters. Methane is an important source of hydrogen and some organic chemicals. Methane reacts with steam at high temperatures to yield carbon monoxide and hydrogen; the latter is used in the manufacture of ammonia for fertilizers and explosives. Other valuable chemicals derived from methane include methanol, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and nitromethane. The incomplete combustion of methane yields carbon black, which is widely used as a reinforcing agent in rubber used for automobile tires.
