Japan's PM rules out compromise as dispute with China escalates.
Official statement from the Prime Minister of Japan.

"As for the Senkakus, they are an inherent part of our territory in light of history and also under international law. There are no territorial issues as such. Therefore, there cannot be any compromise that represents a retreat from this position."

Official statement from the Government of China.

"The Japanese move is a gross violation of China's territorial integrity and sovereignty, an outright denial of the outcomes of victory of the world anti-fascist war and a grave challenge to the post-war international order."

GLP'ers from China and Japan: what are your feelings on this? Do you think that these two governments' statements reflect the feelings of the people?

I saw the riots and protests on TV, but how widespread are they? Is this likely to die down any time soon?

Peace.

As I said before Japan will not back down , island was given to Japan by USA after WWII

If China has a beef go to the U.S
why are they complaining now after 60 years

Good brief analysis (and question at the end).

Do you think Japan might win out in this dispute? With all the trade and investment China is looking to acquire around the world, they might have the most to lose from this spat.

I wonder if the U.S-Japan security agreement compels the U.S to enter the conflict if it comes to physical war?

It'd be interesting to know. So far, the U.S has been keeping right out of this one.

Good point. It's definitely a fine balancing act.

What interested me was how Taiwan suddenly entered the dispute the other day and fired water cannons that Japanese ship.

I bet North Korea is watching this one unfold with glee :-/

No. You don't understand. U.S. soldiers are still all over Japan, not just in Okinawa. Attacking Japan is attacking the U.S. I don't see why Japan and Noda won't share the fishing waters. Oil is irrelevant. Nobody will be drilling for it.

Thank you for contributing to this. I'm keen to get the perspective of people in Japan and China on this dispute.

Do you think most Japanese think the Noda government is overreacting? It seems to be a very political dispute..

Do it, go to war and attack those islands, it will be interesting to see who wins in the end....China without doubt wil be the winner and the Japanese have no rightful claim whatsoever, handed over so America could establish a military base here, and rememeber those island were fucking andmin of of america to start with.

North Korea will unify the South after the nukes destroys Seoul.

All of this is predicating on the Israel attack. If they don't attack, then none of this will come to pass. Although we might then get a huge false flag instead...

That's insane. There's no point in using nukes to make it a wasteland. Conventional warfare is more than enough to determine the future of the Korean peninsula, if the North starts losing maybe then they'll threaten to nuke and the current status quo returns.

Whoa, haha that's one hell of a scenario there!

Briefly back to the topic, if Noda is intent on not backing down perhaps that's because he knows he won't be in power for much longer. Japanese PM's have a political lifespan of about 7-9 months generally..

The question is, will the next PM be more hawkish or dovish towards China?

Well, I'm an American in Japan. I'm also a guy claiming to be a John Titor from the future.

South Korea unifies with North Korea.
China discovers a wealth of resources in Western China.
Korea and Japan peacefully join a federation with a Chinese city as its capital.
This is what happens in my future.

But there are so many strange things happening with China right now that never happened in my world.
Who knows what will happen now.

Interesting thoughts. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

There have been examples in the past where two mortal enemies have come together for a greater good (look at Britain and the United States for instance).

I hope that China and Japan can put this dispute behind them. That's the hope anyway.

Do you think Noda has much time left in office?

Regional federations are on the cards in the march to the full globalisation of capitalism so I suspect that this dispute is the precursor to regionalism of a sort (as is the EU crisis.)

Capitalism cannot go back to the statist model so I don't see this dispute going anywhere other then to more regionalism (and then globalism.)

Capitalists need markets and Japan and China are the mercantilist engines of global capitalism.

There are a lot of incidents like this. It is not the first time. When Prime Minister KOIZUMI used to go to YASUKUNI shrine (a place of right-wing associations) there would be protests from Korea and China. When somebody would sail a boat to these islands, same thing. Or the other side would sail a boat there, Japan would get angry, same thing. It is not new. It has been happening for years. I poke a stick to you, you poke it to me, I say this, you say that, and so on. Its ongoing, I guess it could be said it has the potential for war but I don't think so in the near-term future,

I agree. In any event, the old statist wars and statism in general will be overwhelmed by globalism so no matter what these nations may think, they know which side their breads buttered on.
